2020 Maximum Dependent Unemployment Allowance and Benefits Extended under PUA and PEUC

All states have had their maximum unemployment benefit amounts and duration of coverage significantly enhanced by federal unemployment stimulus programs passed under the CARES act. This has also resulted in an extension of unemployment allowances/benefits for families with dependents in their household (see table below) for several more weeks above current state administered levels.

Under the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) and Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) program, unemployment benefits have been extended for 13 to 26 weeks (depending on state) and also expanded to cover a lot more unemployed workers and their dependents. While this may have not increased the amount of the dependent allowance (like the $500 child stimulus credit), it has significantly extended the duration for when state unemployment dependent allowances are available.

Not all states provide dependent unemployment benefits, but the table below shows the dependents’ allowance, which is a percentage or based on the unemployed worker’s maximum state weekly benefit amount (WBA).
