IRS Has Fixed Stimulus Payment Issues For Non-Filers Getting $500 Dependent Child Economic Impact Payment

The IRS has now resolved glitches on the non-filer portal for those who did not file a tax return in 2018 or 2019, which was used as the initial basis for determining eligibility for the $500 Dependent Economic Impact Payment (a.k.a. stimulus check) approved under the CARES act. Non-filers were redirected to the IRS Non-filers portal to add their bank details for getting this payment, that would be verified by the IRS or other applicable agencies (e.g SSA). Despite entering their information correctly many non-filers missed getting their dependent $500 stimulus payment despite getting their $1200/$2400 adult stimulus. For those with multiple children under 17 the dependent payment was actually larger than the main stimulus check!

However following significant outcry and media attention, the IRS fixed the issue and subsequently many people who missed getting this payment for their eligible dependents under 17 have reported that they are now seeing their overdue payments being made. Which is great news as they no longer need to wait till 2021 by filing a 2020 tax return to get their much needed $500 payment per child.

I commented on this article in late April or early May, relieved that I wasn’t the only one to voice this issue [of not having received the $500 for each of my 3 children] but horrified that it had happened to so many other families. Because of that, I feel compelled to update for anyone who is still searching for answers:

[Update] I had completely given up on the idea that we would receive our missing $1500 without filing in early 2021. However, early Friday evening [July 31, 2020], I received a notification from my checking account that the 1500 had been deposited! If you’re still waiting, there is hope!

Per the IRS, they have corrected the programming error that caused this issue and will automatically issue additional $500 payments per qualifying child to affected individuals in early August. Direct deposit payments are scheduled for August 5, 2020, and paper checks or debit cards are scheduled to be mailed from August 7, 2020. You can use the IRS Get My Payment tool to check the status of the additional $500 payment and you will also receive another notice in the mail letting you know the payment was issue. If you received your payment by direct deposit, the additional $500 per qualifying child in the same bank account.

Further, another $500 dependent stimulus payment has all but been confirmed under the latest stimulus package being developed in Congress. You can see further details in this article. The good news is that eligibility for this payment will be expanded for those under 24 (vs under 17 in first payment). You should expect to see this payment paid along with the second stimulus check for eligible recipients.

Note, the above fix is mainly for those who used the IRS non-filer tools (e.g. SSA, non-filers and SSDI recipients) and if you filed a tax return and still didn’t receive the payment, then you will have to wait for further IRS updates or wait till 2021 when you file your 2020 tax return to claim this a refundable credit.
