2021 IRS Tax Refund Processing Schedule and Direct Deposit Cycle Chart – When Will I Get My Refund!

[2021 IRS refund schedule] The latest tax season has been more of the same with long processing delays and delayed refund payments for many tax payers. This is due in large part to the processing and payment of two further rounds of stimulus checks (recovery rebate credits) by the IRS and new tax legislation under the Biden ARPA bill to provide pandemic relief.

This all meant that the the IRS has had to push out the start of processing 2020 tax returns by two to three weeks to February 12, 2021 and have delayed the end of the regular 2020-2021 tax season to May 17th, 2021. It is expected that tax returns and refund processing will stretch well into summer as the IRS clears a large back log of current and past tax year returns, in addition to making catch-up stimulus payments.

The estimated 2020-2021 refund processing schedule table below has been updated to reflect the delayed start and extension to the tax season. Note that refund deposit dates could be much longer than shown (the IRS says on average most refunds are processing by 21 days) if your return is pulled for additional security or manual processing checks. To get the exact date of your refund payment check the IRS’ Where is My Refund (WMR) tool/app.

It’s also important to note that not all states have extended their tax due deadlines, so check with your states’ tax or treasury website for when your state or local taxes are due in 2021. Failure to pay state taxes could result in penalties.

According to the IRS in 2020, they received more than 167.2 million individual returns and issued more than 124.8 million refunds for more than $314.5 billion. This number is expected to increase to over 175 million in 2021 due to the claiming of missed stimulus payments as a recovery rebate credit in tax filings.

The estimated tax season refund payment dates schedule is based on past refund cycles and IRS guidelines. It shows the date your refund will be processed and paid based on the week your return is accepted and approved by the IRS.

Note that as in previous years, if you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) your refund may be delayed beyond the standard processing times shown below. This is to allow for fraud and dependent verification processing required by law. Based on IRS guidance you can returns with EITC and ACTC claim won’t see any potential refunds prior to the first week of March 2021.

[COVID-19 impact update] The IRS has announced, under the national emergency provision to tackle the Coronavirus, that they will postpone the April 15 tax-payment deadline for millions of individuals, giving Americans an additional 90 days, to July 15, to pay file and pay their 2019 income-tax bills in an unprecedented move intended to ease the economic pain inflicted by the coronavirus outbreak. Further, because the IRS is now focused on paying out the 2020 economic stimulus payments and supporting the new UI stimulus measures in place with other agencies, refund payments will likely be delayed well past the estimated dates shown in the table below. Many readers have reported this and while it is very frustrating, there is not much that can be done given the economic fallout from the virus and soaring unemployment claims.

Note that Jan 27th is when the IRS E-file system will start processing electronic and paper tax returns. Even if you submitted before this date, don’t expect refund processing and payments to take place beforehand.

EITC and ACTC Related Tax Refund Delays (PATH) Update: As in previous tax seasons a number of tax payers will see refund processing delays. The IRS had already announced that it will have to hold/delay refund payments for people claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Child Tax Credit (CTC) due to additional anti-fraud safeguards/reviews under newly enacted laws (PATH Act). But the IRS is now processing refunds which were originally being held up due to PATH mandates. You should no longer be seeing the PATH message as a blocker to get your refund processed and paid. If held up for other reasons (see below) you will get the applicable message/follow-up action.

The federal IRS refund schedule table below is only for electronically filed returns (e-file) done thorough online tax software providers and assumes your tax return was in order. I.e accepted by the IRS via the WMR tool and status is equal to “Return Received”. Paper filed returns can take considerably longer and would add 1 to 2 weeks to the time frames below. Again, use the the tax refund chart below as a guideline and refer to the IRS WMR tool for specific time frames related to your return.

Also note that it could take much longer to get your refund if the IRS deems your tax return submission needs further reviews or your identity needs to be verified. This would add two to nine weeks to the date range of your refund delivery date.

For those impacted by tax refund delays (and it will be a lot this year) make sure you also scroll through some of the 8500+ comments below this article from current and prior years for further ideas/support, including some useful tips and tricks to find out your refund status if you are not getting much insight from the IRS WMR tool. So hang in there if you are dealing with extended delays for getting for your federal tax refund. You are not alone.

For those experiencing ongoing issues or delays with their refunds check out this article on “Why is it taking so long to get my refund.” The IRS has said that  phone and walk-in representatives can research the status of your refund only if it’s been 21 days or more since you filed electronically, more than 6 weeks since you mailed your paper return or if the IRS tool Where’s My Refund? directs you to contact them. The WMR tool will also provide an actual refund date as soon as the IRS processes your tax return and approves your refund. If your refund is taking much longer than the above schedule, and assuming your return was accepted by the IRS, please leave a comment below for the benefit of other readers. I can try digging into the reasons if a few people are seeing delays.

Help! My WMR status bar has disappeared – Does this mean by return is still being processed and/or will my refund be delayed?

As many folks have commented, the WMR tracker status bar may disappear or not be shown if your return falls under IRS review after it is received (Status Bar 1: Return Received) because additional information is needed for your return. This can happen even if you previously checked WMR and it showed the status as “Return Received.”  An explanation or instructions will be provided depending on the situation (eg PATH message or see Tax Topic 152 as discussed below)

But don’t panic when this happens. The IRS still has your return but things are essentially on hold until the IRS gets the additional information from you to continue processing your return . You will either get directions on WMR or IRS2Go or the IRS will contact you by mail. Follow the provided instructions and return any additional information ASAP to get your potential refund and reduce any further delays. Talk to your accountant, tax advocate or tax professional if you are not clear on what the IRS is asking for or you don’t get an update after 21 days.

WMR Path, Tax Topic 152 and 151 message

Two of the most common refund related messages showing up on the WMR tool after your tax return is submitted are the PATH message and to Refer to Tax Topic 152. The PATH message relates to the The Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act (PATH Act of 2015) and is to notify you that the IRS is required to hold refunds claiming the EITC/ACTC until Feb. 15 as described above due to further identity verification.

When you see the “Refer to Tax Topic 152” message it means your refund is being processed and the IRS is directing you its generic refund page for more information. There is not much you can do but wait to see if the IRS finds any issues or requires further verification of your identity or items in your tax return. See the various reader comments below on timing and their experience after getting this and other WMR messages.

A Tax Topic 151 message simply means that you’re getting a tax offset which may result in your refund being less than you expected. The reason for this is that the federal government has “offset” or deducted monies from your tax refund to cover debts you owe other federal agencies. You will get an official IRS letter/report explaining the actual offset and adjustments to your tax return, and details on how to appeal this action – but likely it will delay you getting your refund. While not great news, the silver lining here is that the IRS has processed your return and your adjusted refund (where applicable) should be on its way.

If I can order my IRS tax transcript does it mean I am getting my refund soon?

This question comes up a lot and I have seen a few comments on this suggesting that that if you can order your transcript then your refund is on the way. But this is not a factual statement. Yes there is a correlation because to get a transcript the IRS generally has to have processed your tax return (and refund where applicable). But the IRS is very clear that being able to request a transcript does not mean you will imminently be getting a refund and is among the common myths and misconceptions repeated in social media. The IRS’ official line is that checking the WMR tool is the best and official way to check your refund status.

However I have read a number of comments here and on other tax sites saying that when the WMR site provides limited information on the refund, requesting a free IRS transcript seems to be another way of checking the status of the refund. Generally if you can request a transcript, it means the refund is on the way and the IRS has completed processing of your tax return. But this is all anecdotal evidence.

A note about IRS system issues and refund delays

It appears that the IRS is again having issues with processing returns in a timely manner and so a number of people are seeing delays in getting their refunds or updates in the status of their refund on the WMR tool/app. The IRS has said that all system issues have now been resolved but given the various legacy systems they have and volume of processing I would not be surprised to see system problems arise again this year, which mean delays in processing and paying refunds.

Amended Tax Return Refund Schedule

While the IRS promises to have regular return refunds processed within 21 days for nine out of ten tax payers, it does take quite a bit longer to receive a refund if you amended your tax return. Generally you will have to wait 8 to 12 weeks more for the IRS to process amended returns since they prioritize regular returns. Also note that the standard”Where’s my refund” service from the IRS does not track amended tax return status’. You need to instead use the IRS tool, Where’s My Amended Return.” You can also access the tool via phone by calling 1-866-464-2050.  Only call the IRS to follow up on delayed amended return refunds after 12 weeks. The number to call is 1-800-829-1040.

  2. I haven’t got my Federal and State too. I filed January 30th. Now, I have a DDD which is today 3/15/17.

Q- Does it means I will get both – the federal and the state?? Does anyone knows?

    Thanks

  3. I filed my return on February 15th. I received my state refund 2 weeks ago & still haven’t gotten my federal. I checked the WMR tool and it still says that it’s being processed

    • Mine was accepted on Feb 14. I got both of my state refunds within a week, but it’s now March 16 and my federal return is “still processing” with no projected refund date.

  4. I’ve about had it! I filed 1/20 was accepted 1/23 and here it is 3/15 and it still says it’s being processed! I even talked to the bank and they said that there wasn’t a hold on my account and I still have to wait until 3/17 to call the IRS again! This is just nuts! My son sent his in 1/30 and got his back by 2/16. No, neither of us filed any different as we usually do so there is a problem somewhere! When I talked to the IRS they told me that I wasn’t going to get a letter or anything just to “be patient” processing is taking longer than it should. This is just nuts!!!

  6. Return was e-filed with TurboTax and accepted Feb 8th. Have not received an update as of March 14th. The IRS site still says “your tax return is still being processed, a refund date will be provided when available.” On March 10th, I called a number that actually connected me with a real person at the IRS and after a vigorous verification process ( tax returns have multiple addresses because I’ve lived many places) they still couldn’t tell me what was taking so long to complete my processing. No letter, no anything.

    • I’m dealing with the same issue filed February 1st. I was told my return was accepted by the IRS around February 18th or so. Now it’s saying “your return is being processed.” This is absolutely absurd to do to the American people.

      • I am same Filed on TurboTax 2/10 w/EiC and it always shows still processing. We called right before spring break I think on 3/10 and got pushed around on the phone finally they said their processing server was down when we filed and it is corrected and being processed now. Then gave the same response they always give which is wait 30 days to call again and it can take another 60 days………Needless to say it still says processing and no date given. We got no letter and they said nothing was wrong with the return even talked to fraud dept to make sure. Am I ever going to see this money?

    • Hi Alfred, our submission dates are almost the same (2/4) and I haven’t received my refund either. We haven’t made any changes…same home, same jobs, same kids…but no sign of our refund yet. I guess I’ll call tomorrow since it’s way overdue. Good luck!

Got a tax advocate the next day. 3/7 told I should see my refund before the 28th. Wmr had one bar until this Friday now it’s say processing date will be available soon… WTF does that mean… This single mom is about to snap.

    • If you have not called them you might want to. I filed 1/23 bars disappeared 2/4 and changed to still being processed. Called 2/13 at 21 days and was told I needed to verify id in office she sent me out a letter while I was on hold. If I wouldn’t have called I would have never known that I was flagged for identity theft. I’ve seen many other people that haven’t gotten the identity letters until they call in.

    • I electronically filed the 27th of jan accepted the 29th. Nothing till letter came saying call to verifying identity. I called and answered specific private questions only i would know. they said it was great and they would process it. I called back when no change. I spoke to a woman that said the first woman didnt verify correctly and id recieve another letter. I called back again and they said the second lady was wrong and it was verified correctly and id get a letter after the 13th of march. I recieved it and it said i have to just do nothing and wait till april 27th now. It states after that ill get a check or another letter.
It seems to me they have their heads up their butts and are trying to just buy time because we dont have the man power or smarts working for the irs. So two letters and three people spoken to and all its saying is wait. It really dies suck that nothing can be done about it.

  14. Filed my taxed on 2/3. Was unaware that my husband still had his health insurance after we had canceled it the year prior, but it was valid until mid year 2016 without our knowledge. The refund bar disappeared like 2/20 or so. Received letter on 2/24 asking for 1095 A form and 8962 form. Faxed it on 2/25 with the accounting firm that I had originally done my taxes with. Was told it would take 6-8 weeks for refund. As of 3/11 the topic152 link appeared and the amount that was originally stated there disappeared, wasn’t like that on 3/10. There is no bar just says it is still process. Does anyone know how long after that did they get their refund?

Today mail came and it was a letter from IRS to verify my identity. I called and took care of everything…Lady says I’m good to go. However she also said it can be another 9 weeks. Yes bills are still being paid and I know I shouldn’t count on it but I need to get my new glasses. Mine been taped up for 3 weeks now!

For those who had to verify their identity…. How long did it take you to get ur return?

  21. Filed my taxes through TurboTax mid Jan, had both state and Federal refunds back before end of Jan. Filed my sons the same way, had to file and amended federal return because he got a w2 for a short job we forgot he had and he got his direct deposit AND his paper federal correction amount check by mid-Feb. My fiance on the other hand….filed his taxes Feb 4 with TT, was rejected once because of a typo so I fixed if and it was accepted the next day. He got his state refund a week and a half later…..but here it is March 10th and all the WRM app keeps saying is that his return is “being processed”. No code, nothing. Hes getting frustrated and so am I.

  22. I received that letter where I have verify who I am as well. So I called and verified who I was March 1 and I asked why do I have to verify who I am because I had to submit stuff for them to continue processing my amended return for 2015. The young lady told me that I was randomly selected and that everyone does not have to verify who they are. But we did the verification process and I was good to go and that I should receive my return soon. Well I still have not received it. So I called this morning and a nice gentleman by the name of Gary told me that my federal taxes was received and then placed on hold until I verified who I was. When I called and verified and passed verification, my refund began processing. So now I have to wait up to an additional 9 weeks before I receive my refund.

In all honesty, the IRS does not care about rent that needs to be paid or any other bills. The IRS does not care that you are homeless or anything else. It is sad that it has come to this because people are out their committing fraud on their taxes and the rest of us honest people have to suffer because of their actions. I served my country for 12 years before being medically discharged due to injury. I worked hard for my money and I pay my taxes. We honest should not have to go through this!

  24. I filed my refund through turbotax and my refund was accepted by the IRS on 1/28/2017, I received a letter in the mail February 14th from the IRS asking for forms 1095-a and 8962. I mailed them out the next day. I called the IRS a few days ago to see what’s taking so long as it’s now March 9th and they could not even tell me if they received the forms or not. They did however tell me that the WMR tool will never change until the date I get my refund under this situation. They told me that there is nothing they can’t even research what is going on with my refund until 8 weeks has passed if I still have not gotten it. I feel like I’m in Limbo.

    • This happened to me last year, and turbo tax assured me that this year it would not be an issue and it will all be attached to the return filed electronically. which it seems this year i did not have this issue. But last year the irs suggested when I spoke to them on the phone that to fax it only with the letter. I suggest you call and get a tax advocate and have them check for you. Dont fax it now until you know from the advocate that it is not there.. My son’s is in the same wait like you. His 1095A was incorrect so we entered the info the correct way and called marketplace to send an amended one to the irs. They had it stated he had marketplace insurance longer than he did so we could not show the tax credit for those months or it would of came back as more refund in his case which they down the road would of caught. so now the consequence of doing it correctly is wait on still a letter which you did get but he has not yet! Hope your processes soon and refund is sent.

My WMR has said “We have received your refund and it is being processed,” since 2/15. I did have the EIC so I’m aware refunds weren’t to be received till the week of 2/27. The representative said I should have received a 4464c letter in the mail last week. I have not. My housemates have been checking for me. He also said no action is needed an my return looks fine. I asked to be referred to a Tax Advocate for a 911 situation. He did so and was very thorough and helpful. I should be hearing from an advocate in the next few days. I’ll keep you all posted. Fingers crossed for everyone to get the money they need in the time they need.

And they said there was a system error on their end. Nothing wrong with return and can take up to 8 weeks to fix itself. But no action can be taken until then which will be April 19th. It’s 8 weeks from when the error occurred which was on feb 22nd.

    • You can call the IRS 1800 # ending in 1040 and talk to a rep and the will let you know if the. 8962 form corrected your return. And from the date it was corrected it will take up to 8 weeks for your return to finish getting processed. They say its usually not that long. I just had the same problem and sent the correct paperwork back to them on Feb 15th and it got corrected by the IRS march 8th which was yesterday. Im hoping its not a 8 week wait. If I don’t recieve my return my may 3rd. The IRS said to call back. We’ll see fingers crossed. Hope this was helpful.

She said it takes about 4 to 5 business days for WMR to update with date after code has been inputted..by next wed I should have a date (or money) and stated to call just to follow up! • I am going through the same thing, only its my 2013 they are waiting for. I was able to fax in my 2013 though since I mailed my initial 2013 1040 to the wrong IRS address. I would call and see if they accept a fax for your return. I was told that as soon as they see I don’t owe anything on my 2013 they will immediately(the IRS’ version of immediately) release my 2016 deposit. The fax takes 5-7 for them to receive, mailed in can take 6 to 12 weeks for processing.

I am not sure if the number is the same for everyone but since your issue is like mine, this is the number they gave me 1-866-897-3315. The rep was nice and helpful. HOWEVER, I was on hold for over 2 hours. You have to ASK them what you want to know, they will not give you information.
