We Apologize But Your Return Processing Has Been Delayed Beyond The Normal Timeframe

(2024 tax season updates) Many tax filers are again seeing the message below on the IRS’ Where is My Refund (WMR) page or IRS2Go app days after their return is filed and accepted by the IRS, including after PATH restrictions have lifted.

Unfortunately this message just seems to create more frustration and confusion for many filers, because it does not tell them much.

In this article I will try and shed some light on what this general IRS message means for your tax return processing and potential refund payment timeline.

Refund Status - We apologize return processing has been delayed beyond the normal timeframe

What Does This Message Mean?

This processing message is essentially the default IRS notice that pops when your return is likely to take more than the standard 21 day IRS refund processing timeline.

Unfortunately for many tax filers it will mean a delay to their refund payment and a likely downward adjustment or offset, if the IRS cannot reconcile the amounts claimed versus what they have on their records.

Many filers have also reported seeing more details on their tax transcript following the message. This is generally shown via transaction codes 570 and 971. See more in the sections below.

Return Processing Delayed
Return Processing Delayed

The reference to Tax Topic 152 in the WMR/IRS2Go status box is a general or informational link to their standard refund processing timeline and potential causes of delays.

It is basically the IRS telling you to stay patient and hold on until they finish processing. It also lists several reasons why your return may be delayed, in order to set future expectations.

There is nothing you can do at this stage and often this message results in your status bars disappearing or your tax transcript showing “N/A” for filing activities in the current tax season.

Options and next steps

You can try and use your IRS master file cycle code on your account transcript to get more insight, but this may be of limited value in understanding when your return will progress to the next stage of processing.

Once your tax return does progress (anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks) it will either go for further manual reviews, a more comprehensive IRS examination, or you will be notified that the refund was adjusted (TC570) or offset (TC898), before the final refund amount is paid (TC 846).

Note that in some cases this message may also be the result of pending identity verification checks (e.g. via ID.me) that that IRS is waiting for the filer to complete or respond to.

So ensure you check your mail for any official IRS letters or your IRS account, that require you to take action on an IRS request.

Tax Season Update – IRS refund delays

The latest tax season seems to going much better than last year, mainly due to increased IRS staffing and no new pandemic stimulus or expanded credits to administer.

But there are still delays and despite on time PATH processing, there is clear frustration and stress being expressed by many tax filers.

Per the IRS operations page for the current tax season, where the extended delays have been acknowledged, the IRS is saying it can take 60 to 120 days for them to deal with tax returns that require special handling. This is two to three times what it normally takes.

Other causes for extended delays are due to the manual processing of past year amended returns and tax returns which still need to be adjusted for incorrectly claimed refundable credit amounts related to the EITC, RRC or CTC. The backlog however is much smaller than a few months ago.

While tax returns are opened and processed in the order received by the IRS, they have also said that paper filed returns, filings with errors or missing information, or where is suspected identity theft or fraud, will also face longer than normal delays because of special/manual handling required to resolve issues.

The IRS will first try and fix these internally before contacting the tax filer, which is why you may be seeing the return processing has been delayed beyond the normal timeframe message on WMR or IRS2Go.

If they cannot fix it they will contact you (via mail) and update your processing status and subsequent tax transaction codes accordingly.

Contacting the IRS for refund processing delays

Many have tried contact the IRS to see if they can find out what is taking so long with their refund.

But getting a live agent has been a challenge, and even when they reach someone they are basically told what I referenced above. You can see more feedback and examples in the comments forum below this article.

Until the IRS finishes processing these under review returns, a lot of their customer service agents will not know much more than you are being told.

They may however have more insight into the root cause (e.g tax credit reconciliation issue, identity related delays) but they will still need to wait till a formal determination is made and the next steps determined.

The good news, and I wanted to finish this article with some hope, is that select filers are seeing a faster than predicted turn around in their refund payments, even if they see the above message. So fingers crossed that the IRS is able to move faster as tax season progress.

How Long Is it Taking For Refund Payments After This Message?

The good news is that many tax payers are reporting a change in status from “processing” to “refund sent” within four weeks, versus the 90 to 120 day official guidance.

Messages like the one below are appearing more frequently, showing that the IRS is now processing backlogs more efficiently. Good news for those stuck in this situation!

  1. i had a 971 and 570 code then update to 571 code and under a 846 code with date of November 22 ,2023. Does that mean I should get refund by that date. Because the wmr still says we apologize process delayed

  3. Filed back in March. It still shows “we apologize”… I’ve had to create an ID.me account and no word. I requested transcripts and it doesn’t show any return at all for 2021. I don’t get it. Over 6 months and nothing is being said. I have called every day Monday-Friday for 2 weeks and still can’t get in touch with an actual person. This is so stressful. Need my return for a place.

    • Same situation here. After two weeks the yellow bar disappeared and it just come back in January after 10 months my returns were accepted.

  4. People I have realized that no matter what they say about delay timeframe look at most of filed around the same time right!!! See if you have had a x amount of days first accepted by the IRS, then receive a letter requesting for 120,90, 60 days no result right. Okay, you receive another letter requesting for 120, 90, 60 additional days face the rhythm of the drum beat tax season no different than any other tax season. Everyone is probably low income people being lied to , yes some of us may owe them money but if you filed electronically the computer detect the problem(s) right the computer let them knew exactly what the problem was to fix the problem but we have not received one reason why or what reasons we are delayed beyond the normal time frame. After the first 120, 90, 60, days they should’ve responded with a due date. To many red flags as to the delay. They said they fixed the problem but worse results. I am a diabetic, four children, wife, paying child support, bills fallen behind still delayed beyond getting a DD update going on 7 mo’s now. I don’t have gas, barely paying bills; things getting cut off and paying extra for that which causing a greater problem. Again I met 60 more days still counting with no deposit, no letter yet and they told me around August 11, 2022 that I am going have to do an Amend tax my reply to them was if I needed to do that what 6 month later when you should have gotten me to do that in the beginning of the process. Now I have to wait 5 more months to get the status of my refund the letters I received doesn’t add to what’s really happening at this point. I guess I have to wait for some more days requesting for additional 60, 90, 120 days. Really starting from the beginning. Now people think, do the math.

  9. In 2020 with lock down my w2s and information were locked down and disappeared with tax preparer for 2019 so I did what irs said and made account for nonfiler to get stimulus. It was accepted and so was my direct deposit info yet I got nothing. In 2021 I was told to go to where’s my refund and 4x was told it was processing. Nothing! In March 2022 I finally find my w2s and papers take to another preparer and it’s filed. Accept and reject in a week for identification so I get a pin after a month and accepted again. Now nothing!!! This is a crime and unacceptable

The only thing their automated system is doing is causing the delays on purpose almost automated to lower income Americans and for what for to make is work 3 jobs instead of two? All the dates I see are the same is when the irs is sending. This is on purpose! What are they planning? We should be worried I think!

I got thought to an IRS agent because of the Tax Advocate Hotline. They gave me a one time pin, pushed me through. The IRS agent said I have to wait at least 10 weeks from the time I filed. She could not see anything because the error unit has the return. Tax Advocate is a great source, but they are not taking cases with IRS issues till May. Jackson Hewitt works with Metro Bank they take the money and disburse it. Never again, terrible ordeal with Jackson Hewitt.

  28. Okay so I’ve been trying to find the best way to figure everything out for those still trying to find out about their refunds. If you can’t track it on the where’s my refund or IRS2GO pages ID.ME or the IRS website have ways to track everything. But on ID.ME after setting up an account go to your transcripts. If you’re waiting on 2021 refunds click on the payments transcripts and it will have the dates there for when it’s scheduled to be sent. You can view prior years also. If you have a missing refund or one you haven’t recieved check the transcript first. If it’s completed then the refund should have been sent. If you didn’t receive it and haven’t already go to trace my payment. You can print and fill out a form to send in and from what I’ve gathered if it was direct deposit you’ll have to prove the payment wasn’t recieved. If it was a paper check they’ll have to prove it wasn’t cashed. If this can be done they should issue a new refund. Maybe this will help some of yall. I’ve been going through the same issues, obviously, and Googled and read and researched and looked up forms. I finally have some of my stuff figured out. So maybe it will lead you in the right direction at least.

    • I did this and at least found what looks like they lowered my refund but there is no explanation why. I also notice it says your 2021 return “as originally filed” and lists a refund amount that is NOT what I originally filed. I used TurboTax and all my numbers were confirmed with the Id.Me before I filed because I didn’t want a delay. It does state a date of March 21,2022 on the tax transcript which I assume will be my return date since it hasn’t happened yet. VERY interesting, I wonder what the adjustment was from.

    3) has a process date of March 22
    4) haa a refund date of April 15 22

Called my agent and he said even though it says that date it could come sooner. They adjusted mine because I didn’t get the third stimulus check they say they sent it but it was never recieved. Which I’m still waiting on a refund from my 2019 taxes as well. He gave me a direct number to call it’s 18009199835. So if anybody is having issues with eic or ctc you can call it and it will direct you.

Last week I received a letter to get on the idme site to verify my identity. Even though not a thing has changed from last year. I understand it is to protect me, appreciated greatly, I did verify myself that same day. My status is still processing. It is so frustrating. I want to go see my kids and grandkids. Been 2 years due to the pandemic. Some of us need this money, it’s not extra money, it was ours in the first place!! It’s an issue with more then just the IRS, every one can take money from you lickity split but when they owe you money it is an ordeal to get it, sad state of affairs….good luck all!!

      • There are many who are still waiting for their returns from 2021, as I am, with little response except they ‘need more time’!
Not they you are under an audit. No.
I agree, they have had these funds all year, but no offer to add interest for the use of your money. This should be put into place, then they might find a way to move processing along. Still waiting from last year.

        • If you haven’t gotten last years yet there will be interest added to it. They have to your taxes done and sent by the end of the filling season. Same as this year which is April 15 or the 18. If they go past that date they have to pay interest

    • Did you receive a PIN # from the IRS? I keep hearing of this pin but have never had to select one myself! None of my info has changed in nearly 18 years, so I don’t really understand this at all!

        • Super happy. Today is my birthday and I e-filed 1/27/22 and I have been waiting since. Today I checked the WMR app ND it told me it was still being processed but when I checked my transcript it has been adjusted and approved with a deposit date of April 15th possibly sooner. Plus I had had all the additional credits this year with dependents

  39. The IRS is no longer using ID/me technology. It was frowned upon by Privacy Activists and it discriminated because you have to have a smartphone or a computer with a webcam to use it This was a recent decision.

    • I just used the ID.ME yesterday March 8th 2022. They’re still using it. They have updated the software that scans your face to match your drivers license. But they still use it and you can get an update easier on your tax return as well as amended tax returns. You can also track payments that weren’t received or print forms needed to fill out to find certain information out.

    • They are still using Id me to verify. The decision was about the face recognition. Meaning you don’t have to to basically be on video for verification

  40. I never recieved my refund, nor stimulus check last year. I filed a month ago and nothing yet. Im not holding onto any hopes for this year either. Its all parts of having a taranicle government. Still have to get up every day and go to work because of the thousands of welfare recipient’s that depend on me……
