When Will The $300 Extra Weekly Unemployment Start Being Paid in My State? News and Updates on Payment With PUA and PEUC Claims

[2022 Update] The $300 supplementary payment made in 2020 and 2021, ended in all states on September 6th, 2021 (some states ended it earlier).

Unless claims are in the adjudication process, At this stage all retroactive payments (including those for PUA and PEUC) have also been processed and no new payments are being made.

An extension of unemployment benefits, including the $300 payment, is not likely for 2022 and beyond unless economic conditions deteriorate significantly. I will post updates as they come to light.

____________

The latest (ARPA) stimulus package was passed by Congress and signed into law by the President Biden on March 11th, 2021. It includes further extensions to pandemic unemployment programs (PUA and PEUC) and an extra $300 weekly FPUC supplementary UI payment. The latest supplementary $300 payment will be paid over 25 weeks starting from week of March 15th, 2021 to September 6th, 2021. This is in addition to the previous extension covering 11 weeks from December 27th, 2020 to March 14th, 2021. Eligible payments will be made retroactively in cases where state unemployment agencies face delays with rolling out system updates to process these payments.

The $300 weekly unemployment payment will be made above and beyond any regular state or enhanced federal unemployment payment and require eligible claimants to certify regularly according to their state UI agency guidelines. Claimants will need to be eligible for at least $1 of an underlying unemployment benefit to receive the $300 supplemental payment under the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) program.

You do not need to take any additional action to receive this supplemental payment. States are slowly rolling out these payments for different groups of claimants starting with those already getting regular UI and state extended benefits (active claimants). Those who have exhausted benefits prior to the extensions being rolled out or new claimants will only be able to get payments once their underlying claim is approved.

I will update dates in the table below as states implement these guidelines and start making making actual payments. Please leave a comment if you find updated or incorrect information reflected in the table and I will review/update accordingly. Details on why this payment could be delayed due to PEUC or PUA roll-outs are discussed in this video.

State unemployment departments and agencies will be responsible for disbursing these benefit payments, similar to the $300 LWA and earlier $600 FPUC supplementary unemployment programs. Given the many challenges and various payment issues across states with earlier supplementary UI benefit programs, I expect this to take some time to be rolled out and require retroactive payments to get claimants caught up. So stay tuned and subscribe to get the latest updates. You can also see this $300 FPUC video for more details on this program.

Lost Wages Assistance (LWA) program – Now Expired

The temporary $300 unemployment benefit under the Lost Wages Assistance (LWA) program funding has now been paid in all states who participated in the program. The program expiry date was December 27th, 2020 and this means that any new or retroactive payments under this program will NO longer be paid out going forward. This has been replaced by the new $300 FPUC payment discussed above.

This supplementary payment was a temporary, but much needed benefit for unemployed or underemployed workers who lost the supplementary $600 FPUC weekly payment at the end of July. There was a lot of confusion on when the $300 would actually be paid by state UI agencies which led to the creation of the LWA state tracker table below, which shows the payment status and actual or estimated future date claimants can expect their first weekly unemployment payment, if eligible. You can also see the 1000+ comments from readers that share their experiences around the LWA payment, including some very useful tips if you are facing issues getting your $300 LWA payment.

All states that applied and were approved by FEMA were only initially awarded three weeks of funding – covering the weeks of August 1st, 8th and August 15th.  After that, states and territories will need to submit a Lost Wages Additional Week Request one week at a time for funding to pay claims for subsequent weeks. However any additional funding is subject to the $44 billion budget that is available for this program and it is almost certain that funding will run out before the December 27th expiry of this program, unless Congress approves additional funding via a formal UI benefits extension.

In fact, at this stage approved states will only get a maximum of 6 weeks of funding (weeks covering August 1st to September 5th) for the LWA program per recent FEMA guidance to state labor and unemployment agencies that have already made several weeks of payments. Several states which started making the $300 payments earlier than other states have already been notified that their LWA funding allotment has run out and no additional funding beyond will be approved. Note however that some states like Florida will only be applying for and paying 4 weeks of LWA benefits, since they didn’t meet some of the LWA program qualification rules (details here).

Payment Start date is when the state actually started processing LWA payments OR is the estimated date of the first payment processing based on available information. Note: Due to bank processing delays, it can take 2 to 4 days after the noted dates for benefits to hit your bank account or debit card. Please see links to more information in the table or your state UI website for specific payment status. If you find any mistakes or have updates, please leave a comment below and I will update table to help others.

What if my state has started making payments, but I don’t see my $300?

Claimants in most states do not need to take any action to receive the new benefits available in this program. The additional benefits will be added automatically for all claimants who are eligible and have certified for the relevant week. Their self-certification will ask them to confirm they were unemployed or partially unemployed due to COVID-19. See more FAQs on this here.

However if your state has started making payments and you haven’t received payments you need to first confirm you are eligible. This means you must be receiving at least $100 in weekly unemployment benefit payments (pre tax and before any other deductions). This includes claimants receiving any type of regular unemployment insurance benefits as well as those receiving PUA and PEUC benefits.

If you are eligible and you have not received a payment in several weeks then you will need to contact your state UI agency to ensure the claim has been processed and is not being held up due to fraud, missing/incorrect payment details or due to a weekly or bi-weekly certification issue.

See more in this article on Why Your $300 Unemployment Has Not Been Paid or Delayed.

My state has been approved and the LWA tracker says payments are being made, but when will I get my payment?

The tracker provides an actual or estimated date for the when the LWA payments start being processed by the state. If a start date has been officially published by the state, you will see the status updated to “paying now.” Otherwise it is estimate based on FEMA guidelines or if confirmed by several sources online. However this date (week start date in many cases) may not be the same as the date the actual UI payment will hit your back account or debit card. The actual date you may see the money could be several days after the official state processing start date and tied to your normal UI payment cycle. You will need to confirm via your UI online portal or state agency for the exact payment date.

Also note the payment date is generally the date when payment starts. In many states, due to volume of people being paid, claims are paid out over several days (in batches, based on SSN or First/Last Name). And given processing by banks to disburse these payments via direct deposit or debit cards can take 1 to 2 days, it may take several days after the first payment date for you to receive your payment.

I got my $900 back payment but no payments after that. Why?

The first state LWA grant approved by FEMA was only for three weeks. Hence the $900 payment (3 x $300) is what most people are seeing first, less any taxes or withholding. Subsequent $300 payments are approved and paid on a week by week basis. This includes retroactive payments which will also be staggered. Rest assured if you are eligible for past weeks you will get your payment.

Also the maximum number of weeks that can be paid under the LWA program is 6, which means the maximum payment in most states is $1800 (or $2400 if the state was paying $400 p/week). After the payment of 6 weeks, you will revert to what you were getting under existing unemployment programs.

I am got my first week of payments but not subsequent weeks.

Kristin asked, “My son just got his first payment for the weeks of 08/23 thru 08/29 and 08/30 thru 09/05. He got the extra $300 for the week of 08/23 – 08/29, but did not get the extra $300 for the week of 08/30 thru 09/05. We are in Texas. Do you know why he got it the first week, but not the second week?

Every week is processed separately by the state UI agency subject to FEMA funding. So you may be seeing some variability due to delays in approval, claim processing and eventual bank/debit card payment.

  2. Nevada has been approved by FEMA for LWA funding (3 weeks initially and 3 more future weeks likely). Their UI agency DETR estimates it will take four to six weeks to complete system updates before the agency can begin issuing payments to eligible claimants. No action is required from eligible claimants.

  3. Maryland (MD) started LWA self-certification on Sep 11th, with payments expected early the following week.

Note that the self-certification can only be completed once, so please review and answer carefully. If a claimant completes the self-certification incorrectly, they will not be able to correct it without the assistance of an agent. If claimants are NOT monetarily eligible for the LWA program, then they will not be presented with the self-certification and cannot apply for LWA benefits because they are ineligible.

After certifying that they have been unemployed or partially unemployed due to disruptions due to COVID-19, claimants will receive a lump sum payment retroactive to their earliest date of eligibility within the LWA program within 1-2 days. This initial payment may be on a different day than a claimant regularly receives benefits. FEMA has stated that no funding will be available for states past the sixth week.

  4. How would i know my job is still affected by COVID -19? I receive over 100$ in regular unemployment, i filled out the LWA application, my hours are less than my usual, i work at Applebee’s, we can’t seat too many people close together, we wear masks, we can’t have a certain amount of people in the restaurant, does that mean I’m eligible?

    • Yes…even if you are partially unemployed and get over $100 a week in UI you are eligible for LWA, When you self certify just confirm you were impacted (we all were!)

  5. What do you do when your unemployment balance is getting low and you need an extension? Can you switch to pandemic assistance unemployment? I have not been able to find out an answer to this question via email, phone, live chat, ETC. I live in Kentucky by the way. And has anyone started receiving their backpay last wages assistance?

    • PUA and the $300 LWA (covered in this post) are separate programs and you can be in both program concurrently. PUA provides an extension of state UI benefits to a broader group of workers (see links in article), but no extra payments. LWA is just about the temporary $300 extra payment, which is only available for 6 weeks.

  6. Hi,
I’m from Ohio and I’m curious about the PUA benefits. I applied on July 3rd. I was found eligible on August 20th. It says that my effective begin date was June 21st but they only gave me the $600 Weekly payments dating from July 5th. Maybe I’m not understanding this but I thought it should’ve dated back to June 21st?

Lost Wages Assistance (LWA) Program Update from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security

The extra $300 from the federal Lost Wages Assistance program, created by Presidential Memorandum, will be available in the coming weeks. Mississippi Department of Employment Security (MDES) has received several questions about the program. All individuals who have been filing for unemployment benefits are receiving this message to provide answers to these questions.

          Eligibility:

To receive the extra $300, you must meet each of the following criteria:
•Receive unemployment benefits through one of the designated state or federal programs shown below for the covered weeks
•Be eligible for at least $100 per week prior to federal tax withholding (this is the weekly benefit amount shown on your monetary determination notice)
•Be receiving unemployment benefits as a direct result of COVID-19

          Weeks of Coverage:

•Initially, the four weeks ending August 1, August 8, August 15 and August 22, will be paid for eligible individuals
•It is estimated the Lost Wages Assistance will be available for four (4) to six (6) weeks
•MDES will make weekly funding requests to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as required for additional weeks of benefits covering the week ending August 29, 2020, and later
•Benefits will be paid retroactively to eligible individuals

          Timing of Payment:

MDES is implementing the program as quickly as possible and expects to begin making the initial payments by mid-September.

          Designated Unemployment Benefit Programs

•Unemployment Insurance (UI) or Unemployment Compensation (UC) (state benefits)
          •Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC)
          •Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA)
          •Extended Benefits (EB)
•Unemployment Compensation for Federal Employees (UCFE)
          •Unemployment Compensation for Ex-Servicemembers (UCX)
          •Trade Readjustment Allowances (TRA); and
•Payments under the Self-Employment Assistance (SEA) program

          Work Search Requirements

Unless you are scheduled to start a full-time job within the next four weeks, you must actively seek and apply for full time work each week. Your work search details must be documented when you file your weekly certification for unemployment benefits. When filing job applications online, save confirmation messages and/or emails as part of your work search record.

Self-employed individuals and workers who receive 1099s who are filing for benefits must also meet the work search requirements to remain eligible. This includes making three (3) job contacts each week, one (1) of which must include filing an application or submitting a resume for employment. It is acceptable for the job contacts to be related to your regular self-employment or 1099 activities. You should maintain a log of your job search activities which includes the employer details and all self-employment contacts.

For more information about what is needed to fulfill this requirement, please visit, https://mdes.ms.gov/worksearch.

The official WI DWD site says, “The Department of Workforce Development submitted a grant application for the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Lost Wages Assistance (LWA) program on August 27, 2020. The grant was approved on September 1, 2020. DWD will update this site when additional information is available.”

So not much help there. But if the grant was approved Aug 27th, I cannot believe it will take them so long to implement program and make payments. Many other states have already done it

Only 6 weeks ($300 x 6 = $1800) have been approved by FEMA for GA. The money will be distributed as six extra payments of $300, spread over two days. The first $900 payment will be distributed early next week and the second $900 payment will be issued by the end of the week.

  25. Hi, I’m from Illinois have been unemployed since the summer. I certify the 14th of September. Does that mean I will be getting retropay of $300 each week from August 1st? So a total of $1,800 or will it be a different amount? Thank you

    • Latest update from NY DOL is “New York State is working to implement this program as quickly as possible. There is no need to call the DOL at this time — we will contact claimants with additional information when the program is able to launch. In the meantime, per federal law please continue to certify weekly to ensure you receive all benefits to which you are entitled”

        • Moved to payments starting week of Sep 13th, which is inline with their recent news release

HEYENNE – On September 9, 2020 the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) informed the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services (DWS), that the Lost Wages Assistance program (LWA), which provided an additional $300 a week to qualified unemployment claimants will end with benefit week September 5, 2020. DWS is in the final stages of program implementation and payments will be provided to eligible individuals in the coming days.

FEMA previously approved DWS funding requests for the benefit weeks of:

          August 1, 2020
          August 8, 2020
          August 15, 2020

As soon as the program is fully implemented in Wyoming, DWS will issue retroactive payments to eligible claimants for the approved three weeks, and will continue to request funding for the additional three weeks as long as FEMA funds remain available. Claimants will continue to receive normal weekly benefit amounts for any benefit weeks for which they are eligible.

        • I’ve got the same question. Updates on Louisiana. I have not received the $300 Direct deposit payment this week9/11, for last weeks 9/5 claim.
I have received a total of $900 for weeks August 14, 21, and 28. With the last direct deposit of $300 on Sept. 2.
I can not locate any news about Louisiana’s $300 EXTRA BENEFITS. The UNEMPLOYMENT website for Louisiana does not mention anything (News, updates) about that benefit. Even on my personal unemployment account it does not show the $300 payments only my weekly benefit Payments of $247.
          Any help would be appreciated!

        • I contacted the LWC and she the payments are coming they’re just 24-48 hrs behind bc of the holiday

  28. Hey Andy. The state of Illinois says “paying now” i claimed my Weeks of unemployment Tuesday and I checked my benefits today and I only have my normal unemployment benefits. How is it going to be paid for the extra $300 and the back pay. Do I need to keep checking my balance everyday to see if its added or what?

    • It shows up under Lost wages at the bottom of the list of payment types so where you saw the 600 there’s now one under that and that’s where you see the 300 and all payments for that.

    • Hi, IL here. Certified Monday the 7th (regular unemployment). Today is Friday the 11th and still have not received the $300.00 LWA. My unemployment far exceeds the $100.00 benefit whereas, I would be denied. Anyone from IL receive the LWA/FEMA benefits? Please advise, thanks.

    • I’m in North Carolina too and recieved three weeks on the 6th, and was told by many sites that there could be up to atleast 6 weeks worth of payments. And now, I see quite a few states got atleast 2 more weeks, which is 5 and Georgia and a couple other states are getting 3 more weeks, so they’re getting 6 weeks total. Why is this different for so many states. We need more help.

  30. I live in Cali and received the extra 300 on Sunday September 6 but I did not get lump sum they said I would get now they’ve added two more weeks, where’s the rest of the money?

    • Hi Terri,
I’m in CA and in the same situation. Received 300 on Sunday, not the lump sum. I also saw in my claim history that the program I’m in is classified now as ‘Disaster Assistance’. I certified in March for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance which is eligible for the extra 300. Looking on EDD website there is a Disaster Unemployment Assistance program (what people that can’t work due to structural damage to place of employment–think fires) that is not eligible for Lost Wages Assistance that all PUA folks should be getting. Not sure if this is just a word choice issue and our $ is coming, or if we have actually been reclassified into a different program that is ineligible?!

  31. Andy,
I have a question for you or anyone else that may be able to answer it. If I reopened my claim in May and I was told that I had over payments that I had to settle. So they started taking my unemployment payments but I was still getting the $600 every 2 weeks. How will that effect my $300 payments? I am getting $450 per week and I have finish paying off my overpayment August 16th.

    • Hi Lucinda,
I live in California also, the unemployment site just posted that I received my regular payment on the 6th. May be that is why they keep shutting their site down to try and catch up. Hopefully we will get it soon.
