Any Further Federal Unemployment Benefits in 2024? News and Updates

With the expiry of federal enhanced unemployment benefit programs like PUA, PEUC, $300 FPUC and $100 MEUC in all states, there has been considerable chatter around what happens next and if missing or back payments are still being made.

While the pandemic unemployment stimulus programs are unlikely to be resurrected given record levels of employment in 2022 and into 2023, claimants will still however have access to a more streamlined set of state unemployment benefit programs.

Unfortunately PUA claimants, like freelancers or those without easily verifiable income, are left in the lurch since they wouldn’t qualify for traditional state unemployment under current rules.

And even if they do qualify, in many states the maximum amount of state unemployment benefits is barely enough to live on under current inflationary conditions. This is why many states are working to increase benefits and provide additional stimulus payments.

I will continue to monitor progress on further federal unemployment benefits and you can see the sections below for information on past programs. For the latest you can join our email newsletter for this and related topics.

States Not Extending Enhanced Benefits

Per the latest update no state unemployment agency has extended enhanced unemployment benefits, despite already approved stimulus funds being available for states to use and President Biden calling for the states to do so.

The main reason apparently is the overly high cost of running these enhanced UI programs (PUA, PEUC etc), which was originally paid for using federal funding allocated to administer these programs. The cost of running and administering these programs was apparently running into the hundreds of millions of dollars in large states.

Further extending benefits to a relatively small percentage of the population would be politically hard to justify given the falling unemployment rate and persistent issues business are facing with filling open vacancies.

I’ll continue to post updates as more information comes to hand and you can stay connected via the options below.

You can also see more on how retroactive benefit payments will be made to claimants for weeks they were eligible/covered under the enhanced unemployment program(s).

No Biden Executive Order. States Have Funding to Expand Unemployment Benefits

The Biden Administration has confirmed that they won’t push to extend federally funded unemployment benefits past the September 6th expiration date via Executive Order or Congressional action. Instead they are encouraging states with high unemployment to use some of the existing $350 billion in ARPA stimulus allocated for State and Local Fiscal Recovery (SLFR) initiatives to fund enhanced unemployment benefits.

As discussed in this video, there is wide latitude for usage of these funds by state governors and departments, which includes funding emergency unemployment benefits. States who ended participation early in federal unemployment programs could also use these funds to extend/expand benefits if they choose to do so.

Some claimants may be eligible for State Extended Benefits (SEB), but after September 4th all claimants must have a regular UI claim to continue receiving benefits. See more in these state specific unemployment pages.

Biden Emergency Extension to Pandemic Unemployment Benefits?

With the rapid spread of and potential economic slowdown from the virulent Delta COVID-19 strain there is now talk of the Biden administration repurposing some of existing ARPA stimulus bill funding to extend pandemic unemployment programs to the end of 2022.

This is similar to the six week LWA extension that President Trump passed by executive order last year (using existing FEMA funding) when Congress could not initially agree on funding an extension to pandemic unemployment benefits.

If Congress cannot provide additional funding then this will be the most likely path for a short-term “emergency” extension of pandemic benefits and could be done relatively quickly along party lines, or simply by a Presidential Executive order. White House lawyers are likely already working on this as a possible option.

Note that states which had ceased participation early in the federally funded unemployment programs will need to reapply to get access to this short term extension, if indeed it is passed.

To Extend or Not?

The argument for extending benefits is that while the economy has improved and COVID vaccination levels keep rising (despite the surging Delta Coronavirus strain), many unemployed are still having a hard time finding a job and millions have gone into the “long term” unemployed category which means they won’t qualify for regular state unemployment – even if they enter a new benefit year. Further constraints with schooling and affordable childcare in addition to the risk of getting more virulent strains of COVID is keeping many front line/customer facing workers from returning to work.

However many business are also providing a counterview and saying they cannot fill open vacancies, particularly in the retail and hospitality industries which have lower income jobs. Because of the overly generous federal benefits, and especially the $300 extra weekly payment, many workers have no incentive to get back to work. As a result of this pressure, many state governors have moved ahead with ending their states participation early in one or more of the enhanced unemployment programs. In some cases more than 10 weeks ahead of the September end date!

Which States Ended Unemployment Benefits Early?

Following recent job reports that showed a shortage of workers to fill open positions, many Republican led states have now ended federally funded pandemic unemployment programs in order to incentivize workers to return to work. You can see the table below for when states ended one or more of the pandemic unemployment programs early.

The argument is that these generous UI benefits deter lower income workers (who make less than $15 p/hour) from returning to work. Opponents argue that the reason people are not going back to work is due to fears around getting COVID (especially with the surging Delta virus) and/or child care and schooling restrictions.

You can see more on states that ended the PUA, PEUC and $300 FPUC programs here and a YouTube video I made on this topic. Note that in several states, local claimant/advocacy groups are filing lawsuits against Governors and UI departments to overturn or suspend the early termination of benefits (and some have gotten injunctions).

Biden Stimulus Package Unemployment Extensions

Congress and President Biden have now passed into law the $2 trillion stimulus package, also known as the American Rescue Plan (ARP). It includes further unemployment program extensions until September 6th, 2021 for the PUA, PEUC and FPUC programs originally funded under the CARES act in 2020 and then extended via the CAA COVID Relief Bill. The need for another unemployment stimulus was reinforced by the prevailing high unemployment situation in many parts of the country due to the ongoing COVID related economic fallout.

Unemployment Benefit Extensions Per DOL Guidelines

The initial Biden stimulus package passed in the House included a $400 FPUC extra weekly payment but in order to get all Democrats in the Senate onboard it had to be cut back to $300 p/week. This amount is the same as the $300 weekly supplement approved under the CAA COVID relief bill (discussed in earlier updates below) was funded until March 14th, 2021 but will now be extended through to week ending September 4th, 2021. This provides another 25 weekly payments for a maximum of $7,500.

The $300 weekly FPUC payment lines up with the September extension of the PUA and PEUC programs. Claimants should be able to rollover remaining weeks from the CAA funded extensions (11 weeks) to the extended Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) and Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) programs. You can see a graphical representation of the past, current and proposed enhanced unemployment program extensions in the diagram below. See a full review of DOL guidelines this article.

See the following articles for more information on these enhanced unemployment extensions and payment status

2020 to 2021 Enhanced Unemployment Extensions - PUA. PEUC, $300 FPUC - Updated with DOL guidelines
2020 to 2021 Enhanced Unemployment Extensions – Updated with DOL guidelines

So how many weeks is the actual extension under the ARP bill? 29 weeks or 25 weeks?

While the ARP stated that both the PUA and PEUC programs were extended by 29 weeks, the actual number of weeks between week ending March 20th and September 4th is only 25 weeks. This was noted in the DOL guidelines (page 6) around the ARP extension and as such claimants will not be able to exhaust their full entitlements, unless the UI programs are extended (see more in this article)

I had also noted earlier that there could have been a phase-out period for active claimants to use remaining weeks like the CAA 11-week extension; however final DOL guidelines removed phase-out provisions and all program benefits expire on weeks that end before September 6th, 2021. This would be September 4th, 2021 in most states, or September 5th, 2021 for those that a benefits week ending on a Sunday.

Unemployment Tax Break

Another valuable provision in the ARP bill for unemployed workers is to make the first $10,200 in unemployment payments non-taxable to prevent the surprise tax bills many jobless Americans faced in 2020 when filing their tax return. The provision will only be applicable to households with incomes under $150,000 and is only available for 2020 unemployment benefit payments. See how this could impact you if you already filed a return.

I will be monitoring updates and progress as the new UI provisions are implemented by state UI agencies. The DOL is expecting it will take many states until April to implement the extended weeks of coverage, so expect some delays. 2021 Enhanced Unemployment Extensions Under COVID Relief Stimulus Bill

Common sense has prevailed and President Trump has now signed the $900 billion COVID relief stimulus bill into law, despite his reservations and following widespread condemnation against his last minute complaints. This now releases, among many other items, funding for the enhanced unemployment benefit programs (details below) and stimulus checks to millions of Americans.

For those receiving UI benefits under the PUA and PEUC programs you should continue certifying weekly as payments will be made retroactively once the final bill is approved. While you won’t receive payments, you want to ensure you don’t face delays when back payments start. For those who have exhausted their benefits, they will have to unfortunately have to wait until the final bill is passed before next steps are known.

2021 Enhanced and Extended Unemployment Programs Summary

[Dec 25th update] President Trump sent a lump of coal to jobless and underemployed Americans for Christmas by refusing to pass the COVID stimulus bill that had passed in Congress after lengthy negotiations, which contained the unemployment program extensions and funding for a second round of stimulus payments (see earlier update below). This means that Congress will have to now go back in session to pass the bill again with a presidential approval override.

Bottom line as discussed in this UI stimulus update video is that there will be a delay in payments and a likely lapse in benefits as the PUA and PEUC programs expired on December 26th. New payments under the $300 FPUC and $600 stimulus will now only start (assuming the COVID relief bill does pass) in 2021 with people having to rely on retroactive back payments for their benefits.

[Approved Stimulus Package] Congressional leaders have passed a circa $900 billion stimulus plan that includes funding for an approximately 11 week extension (to March 14th 2021) to federal pandemic programs (PUA, PEUC) and additional supplementary unemployment benefits at $300 FPUC per week for millions of unemployed or underemployed Americans who lost their job or income due to COVID.

Per the legislative text, the extension funding will only cover the period after December 26th 2020 and run for approximately 11 weeks, until March 14, 2021. Like the original $600 FPUC program (in effect till July 31st 2020) the new $300 FPUC payment only has a $1 minimum threshold, which is different to the $100 for the LWA program. PUA and PEUC programs have been extended and will provide an additional 11 weeks of retroactive coverage.

You can see the latest around this and FAQs around how this will be paid in this regularly updated $300 UI payment article or via this video. This covers when these payments will be paid, retroactive payments and coverage periods.

[December 2020 update] Congress is back in session after a tough election cycle and there is still a wide chasm between Republicans and Democrats when it comes to agreeing on a new Coronavirus / COVID stimulus package, which would include enhanced unemployment benefit extensions to programs that expand UI coverage (PUA and PEUC) and provide additional supplementary payments like the $300 LWA and $600 FPUC programs.

Without additional extensions to the PUA and PEUC program funding and end dates, unemployed workers who have weeks left to claim (i.e. a pending balance) after December 31st would not receive any additional benefits under this program. This could impact nearly 5 million unemployed Americans. Further the supplementary benefit payments, above and beyond the regular or enhanced state benefits, have been critical to those living in high cost states where the standard UI benefit has not provided sufficient income to live on. Overall more than 20 million jobless Americans have come to rely on the enhanced COVID unemployment benefits to make ends meet while they wait for their employment situation to improve.

$908 Billion Interim Stimulus Package and UI Benefits Extension

There is however some hope that the current Congress can at least pass a bridging or interim stimulus package as part of the annual government funding bill, which would provide temporary relief until the new Congress and President are sworn in next month and pass a larger stimulus package. A group of bipartisan lawmakers unveiled an approximately $908 billion COVID relief plan that includes $180 billion of federal funding for pandemic unemployment programs and $300 in UI supplementary benefits. There is also an alternative $916 billion stimulus bill proposed by Trump and Senate Republican leaders which has no supplementary unemployment benefits, but rather a $1200 stimulus bill. Naturally unemployed Americans would prefer the $908 billion stimulus package. There is still nothing in a formal bill but this is the most progress made on a real extension in a while. You can see more in the following YouTube video I recently published on this interim stimulus bill.

Are unemployment benefits in the stimulus retroactive

Yes, it is expected that unemployment benefits – both supplementary and extended – would be retroactive to the start of the program or latest extension, so many eligible recipients should get a pretty significant unemployment check payment if they face delays but are eventually approved for past weeks.

Will I have a lapse or delay in getting my benefits if a bill does pass this year?

Some are arguing that the ongoing delays in Congress passing a new stimulus bill that includes UI benefits extensions may mean a lapse or extended delay in 2021 payments even if a bill is passed in the next week or two. Based on the challenging rollout of other Pandemic unemployment programs (LWA, FPUC) this year, worker advocates say it could take weeks for the antiquated state unemployment systems and programs to get updated and process claims/payments for new benefits.

[Post Election update] With Democratic candidate Joe Biden winning the Presidential election and Senate Republicans likely to retain control of the Senate (pending final certification and Georgia run-offs), the probability of a stimulus package containing supplementary unemployment benefits happening this year is very remote as Trump and the Democrats have no political incentive to compromise. This means current and retroactive payments under the CARES act enhanced unemployment programs (PUA, PEUC and FPUC) will expire at the end of the year. Further, it is also highly likely that the next stimulus package will be much smaller and more focused. This means any supplementary unemployment benefits will be in the $300 to $400 range (similar to the LWA program) and for a short period (2 to 3 months). More details will come soon and I will post updates as that happens.

[Pre-election update] Unfortunately hope for another stimulus package, that would have included additional unemployment benefits, is quickly dimming as the Senate (led by Republican Mitch McConnell) has now recessed until after the election following the confirmation of Supreme court justice Amy Coney Barrett. This means that it is highly unlikely the Senate will reconvene to vote on a new stimulus bill, even if the White House and House Democrats agree on a stimulus package. This is devastating news for the millions of unemployed Americans impacted by COVID related job losses. The main hope is that after the election, a new stimulus bill is quickly passed that makes included unemployment benefits retroactively payable.

[October 2020 update on latest negotiations] With a month to go before the federal election, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin are working hard to compromise on a new pre-election stimulus deal that will include additional unemployment benefits and another stimulus check. Per their recently passed bill in the house, Democrats are still pushing for a $600 p/week supplementary UI payment (similar to the FPUC payment which expired in July), but will likely have to settle for a maximum $400 weekly payment in line with the recently paid Lost Wages Assistance (LWA) payment and the White House proposed $1.8 trillion stimulus bill.

However Senate leader, Mitch McConnell has said it is unlikely that the Republican controlled Senate would have the votes to pass such a large stimulus bill and he is instead proposing on passing a smaller $500 billion stimulus bill, with more focus on small business’ via extending the PPP program and only $300 in additional weekly unemployment benefits. This is not something the Democrats or the White House are likely to support. Either way, with only a few days to go before the presidential election if another stimulus bill does not get agreed to this week then it could be a real possibility that no additional unemployment benefits will be available in 2020. This will be a devastating blow to millions of Americans and have a pretty significant impact on the US economy due to the contraction in consumer spending over the holiday season.

In addition to funding extra unemployment benefits, a key part of any stimulus package, there is also bipartisan consensus on sending another $1,200 direct payment (stimulus check) before the end of the year. There would also be help for struggling small business through additional funding for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and for airline industry employee furlough prevention. Support for states, local governments, home owners and renters will also likely be part of any new stimulus package.

See details on when the renewed unemployment stimulus could be paid if passed in the next few weeks. Payments will be retroactive to September 12th, the week after LWA benefits expired.

[August 2020 Update] With Congress unable to reach an agreement on a new stimulus bill and no impending legal challenges it looks like Trumps executive order (detailed below) to replace the extra weekly unemployment benefit (FPUC, or $600 weekly payment) will actually be implemented following FEMA guidance on the Lost Wages Assistance (LWA) Program. The following are key guidelines:

The LWA program will provide eligible claimants in state administered unemployment Insurance (UI) programs up to $400 per week additional UI benefits, starting with weeks of unemployment ending on or after Aug. 1, 2020, and ending Dec. 27, 2020 at the latest. This means that payments will be retroactive to August 1st, even though the program will be implemented after that. See which states have started implementing the LWA program and when unemployment benefits will start to be paid.

As per recent federal enhanced unemployment benefit programs, for individuals to quality for LWA benefits they must certify that they are unemployed or under unemployed due to coronavirus (COVID-19) related reasons, and the state must confirm that the individual is receiving at least $100 of existing unemployment benefits (e.g. under state UI, UCFE, PUA, EB or PEUC programs) This is to prevent fraud from people who were claiming this payment with minimal UI benefits.

LWA a joint federal-state agreement where the federal government is covering 75% or $300 of the extended unemployment benefit (via $44 billion in FEMA Disaster Relief Fund funds). States own contributing the remaining 25% ($100) of the benefit payment using state budgets or the emergency funding received under the CARES Act.

However the state contribution is not mandatory and is at the discretion of the state’s governor. Further states can count existing unemployment benefits paid to claimants against their $100 obligation under the LWA program. This could result in unemployed workers across many states facing significant budget shortfalls only getting the baseline federal payment of $300 in additional benefits.

The LWA is a different program to the FPUC program and some states may require claimants to reapply for these benefits.

Because Trump’s executive order cannot allocate new federal funding, the LWA program may end earlier than Dec. 27 (highly likely) if FEMA expends $44 billion prior or the balance of the Disaster Relief Fund decreases to $25 billion. Congress would then have to approve additional funding.

[Updated with further WH clarifications] President Trump has signed a series of executive orders, one of which includes extending the weekly unemployment benefits payment (FPUC) to the end of the year. However as expected and per the earlier update below, he is lowering the FPUC amount to a maximum of $400 p/week. The is made up of $300 in federal funding and $100 of state funding. In recent clarifications from the white house confirmed that the state component of the FPUC unemployment funding (25%, or $100) was optional. So this essentially means $300 is the base amount that many jobless Americans could be getting in several states, who are already seeing budget shortfalls from the pandemic induced slowdown.

When will the payment be made?

The legality and ability of this executive order to go into effect is already under question and will likely be challenged in court, not to mention the time it may take states to implement these changes and funding model.

However the Labor Department has said the $300 a week in federal unemployment benefits could reach claimants by the end of August, assuming states can update their systems to accomodate the new payment structure. This will mean, like the first payment, some states will get this payment out faster than other states. Further the extra unemployment payment amount will range between $300 and $400, depending on how much states can fund their portion of the payment.

Given the legal and political challenges the executive order will face, I would not be banking on seeing the $400 in your bank account or debit card anytime soon. More than anything it will almost force Congress to act quicker to pass something more official to ensure the President does not take political advantage of this situation.

[Update – August 6th] At this stage the $600 extra weekly payment has expired and Lawmakers have yet to reach an agreement around an extension. The latest public proposals are shown below and here is an analysis of the impact of losing the $600 to people’s weekly incomes. Based on the stock market’s inexorable rise people are pricing in a likely extension sooner rather than later (otherwise consumer spending would crash) so stay tuned for what the final details may look like. The White house, is looking to get the Democrats and Republicans to compromise on a $400 weekly payment to year end, by making concessions in other areas of the latest stimulus package being negotiated.

[Proposals] Republicans have proposed a contentious extension to the weekly FPUC supplementary unemployment benefit under their recently released HEALS (health, economic assistance, liability protection, schools) Act. They are proposing to extend the current weekly FPUC unemployment benefit to the end of the year, but doing so in two phases as follows:

  • They will cut the current supplementary $600 FPUC weekly payment to $200 per week. This straight line cut would be in effect till the end of September 2020 (or first week of October in some states based on their UIC payment schedule), in order to allow states to implement the second phase approach which ties wages earned before a job loss to the amount of supplementary unemployment benefits paid. The $200 payment would be on top of current state maximums and would have a disproportional effect on states like Florida and Arizona which already have low UIC weekly benefit amounts.
  • In the second phase from early October 2020, the Republicans are proposing limiting the total unemployment benefit (supplementary + state amount) to 70% of an individual’s pre job-loss wages rather than a fixed weekly supplementary benefit as is currently in place. The maximum supplementary amount that could be paid would be $500. The calculation of the 70% threshold will be based on a federal Department of Labor formula or by a state proposing an approved alternative method. So for example Jack, who lives in California, was earning $800 p/week before he involuntarily lost his job. His UI payment under the Republican proposal would be limited to a maximum of $560. Assuming he was eligible against other criteria, he would then get the state maximum of $450 plus a supplementary amount $110 only. This compares to the $1050 ($450 + $600) he would get under the current FPUC program. A pretty significant difference.
  • For contractors, gig wokers and freelancers this new approach would have a larger impact since consistently proving their income before the job loss will be a challenge. Further it will likely take state UI agencies several weeks to implement this new calculation method and verification processes, which is why $2 billion was included in the HEALS Act states to upgrade their UI systems.

The above counter proposal is in response to the Democrats HEROES act (details below, and passed in the House back in June) which proposed a straight extension of the $600 payment to the end of the year. While the parties are still far apart, the silver lining is that Republicans are finally on board with an extension. The reason the extension is low is purportedly because they want to encourage returning to work where wages would be higher than unemployment for most Americans. But the Democratic controlled house won’t likely accept such significant cuts with many pundits expecting a compromise to result in a supplementary $300 to $400 weekly amount (or an equivalent amount) till the end of the year.

This story is developing as both parties are going to have to compromise on a final extension. The main takeaway is that the $600 payment will be cut, but that the overall FPUC program will be extended to provided supplementary benefits.

[Prior Updates] The expansive pandemic unemployment provisions passed under the CARES act stimulus package have been widely acknowledged as the largest boost to individuals who lost their jobs as a result of the Coronavirus induced slowdown. In particular the extra $600 (FPUC) weekly payment on top of the regular state unemployment compensation has been by far the most effective part of the government’s economic policy response to the fallout from the Coronavirus induced recession and unemployment spike. For over 50 percent of jobless Americans the extra $600 and regular UI weekly payment more than replaced what they were earning from working.

While the debate rages along party lines on extending benefits, Trump administration officials and Congressional Republicans have strongly indicated they don’t want to extend the $600-a-week FPUC supplementary UI benefit past its current expiry at the end of July 2020. They feel the economy is improving and want to encourage workers to go back to work versus relying on the generous enhanced unemployment benefits. This is why they are pushing back-to-work bonus payments or reducing the extra weekly payment to somewhere between $200 and $400, and providing a temporary stipend to those who return to work.

House Democrats, led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, on the other hand have reiterated the importance of the $600 weekly payment for the millions of unemployed by passing putting a new Stimulus bill in the House, called the HEROES act, which includes an extension of the $600 per week extra unemployment payment (FPUC) through to January 2021 as the current FPUC provisions approved in March are set to expire at the end of July.

There is little doubt that the $600 payment and other enhanced unemployment benefits – in addition the PUA covering those workers not normally eligible for state unemployment benefits or extending existing benefit coverage periods by 13 weeks (under PEUC) for those whose jobs or livelihood were impacted by COVID – will be a big boost to many households. However the roll-out of these new provisions and payment to recipients has been less than stellar to say the least, mainly because of decades of under-investment in the administrative capacity of state UI agencies and systems (many still using mainframes or home grown software) has left them incapable of flexibly in adjusting to the new provisions and determining the eligibility of newly covered worker groups. Even back pay for retroactive payments is taking far longer than planned.

A Compromise on Extending Unemployment Benefits?

It appears highly likely that the President and his administration will have to provide some level of support to the millions of unemployed workers given the resurgence of the Coronavirus in several states that has forced extended business closures. As such a Senate proposal by the Democrats called The American Workforce Rescue Act (AWRA), may provide a party line compromise that the president could get behind, particularly as the presidential election is only a few months away. The AWRA proposal would continue to provide the full $600 extra weekly unemployment payment as long as the states unemployment rate is above 11%. When it drops below 11% (based on a three-month average), it will start to phase out to $0 until the state’s unemployment rate drops below 6%. So essentially $100 less for every percentage drop between 11% and 6% of a state’s unemployment rate.

With the current provisions expiring in a few weeks, I expect that that Congress will eventually craft a bill to extend these UI benefits to the end of 2020 using a hybrid of one of the above proposals – which may well also include another 2020 stimulus check to cover those not eligible for unemployment benefits.

The table below shows the impact of losing the extra $600 weekly payment against the maximum weekly benefit amount (WBA) current paid by state unemployment agencies. As you can see, in several states it is pretty significant and the impact is much, much higher if you are not getting close to the maximum amount in your respective state.

    • Companies are lying they are only saying they want help cuz if they told the truth that those help wanted signs are fake they would have to pay back the covid loans. I know first hand what is really going on. Unemployment at a low simply because people ran out of weeks not cuz these liar companies hired anyone.

  1. This is saying you must make a minimum of $100 weekly before the extra $400 will be added. I only make $95 a week before the $400. I live with my elderly dad who has major heart condition. I cannot afford to go back into the public and bring home the virus. However because I am $5 short of the minimum requirement, I won’t get the $400? I can’t live off $95 minus taxes….. what are people like me supposed to do?

      • So am I. I live in Mississppi. One of the poorest states. I only draw 85.00 a week. I won’t be able to draw the extra money. I have worked all my life paid my taxes-etc. I think this a bunch of crap. Why does the government think we don’t need help too? We draw less than 100.00. I would think we would need it more. What is the world coming to? I feel like I’m being punished for something I have no control over. I’d like to see what they would do if the shoe was on the other foot. I mean this is crazy. How am I suppose to live. Can they explain that to me?

I also was a caregiver for my Mom who had cancer and Unfortunately I lost her in June. I’m an asthmatic as well so I first of all didn’t want to bring anything home to her and I couldn’t be at my job because I’m a cashier at my local grocery store. Plus I had my daughter home w me!!! I’d definitely be making more if I was working though. I’m even on the verge of being homeless I sure could use the retroactive $300 benefits!

I SHOULD KEEP GETTING 600 A WEEK BECAUSE IS CLOSE TO WHAT I MADE. THE JOB MARKET IS NOT HIREING AT ANY MORE THAN 30,000 AT MOST AND I WAS AT 50,000 PLUS CMON,
MAKE UP YOUR MINDS AND QUIT MAKING US SUFFER.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. I was on furlough then finally lost my job due to budget cuts (how convenient). I have applied for 115 jobs and have had nine interviews. When you’re 60+ and employers are receiving dozens of responses per job, it’s not that easy. I’ve worked since the age of 12, so comments about being better off without a job are disgusting and ignorant. Politicians need to work on age discrimination next.

    • I so agree. I am a Covid19 layoff and am an executive administrator making decent salary after years of experience. At 66yo in pandemic unemployment times I have little chance to get hired at that level. My SS is little since I stayed home for 22+ years to raise my now successful adult children. Now on Medicare and those costs the additional FPUC $600 is no where near my weekly salary, so if I could go back to work making my salary, of course I would.

  5. No matter which side you are on, here is something else to consider. I am an
Alaskan, just shy of 60 years old, my primary profession, was truck driver/equipment operator, for over 35 years. I have NEVER once drawn
unemployment before, EVER, before this Covid19 disaster. I used to run the
entire continent, Yes, Alaska, every Canadian province, and even go into
Mexico. Well, from Alaska, if you are going by roadway, you HAVE to go
through Canada !! Well, guess what, they SHUT DOWN the border(s) and
say NO !! Did we ask for this?! NO!!!! So does this make it OUR fault?!
I had to pull teeth practically to FINALLY get the FPUA going. Even though
it “said” zero job searches required (for now) I am smart enough to NOT think or expect that the gov can keep supporting us,me,you,ANYBODY forever,
We The People are NOT the ones that screwed us out of our work, businesses, etc. !! I looked at the Job Openings while I was in the website and it returned ZERO openings !!!! Ya think that “might” just be a problem??!!
So, YES, the $600 needs to be extended, at least until, EVERYTHING is back
to FULL pre Covid capacities, and we ALL know, THAT is NOT going to be
    anytime soon !

  6. I see lots of comments from working people who have, through no fault of theirs, lost their income and are struggling. However, there is a class of people in the country who are feeling no pain, and should. I refer to the investor class who own property, are landlords, or who own mortgage-backed security investments. Passive income. What should happen is that for anyone who has been laid off due to any shutdown orders whatsoever, they should be able to, once showing proof of having lost their jobs, be eligible for suspension of rent or mortgage payments. Not delaying them, never paying them until employed again. For too long we have coddled the investor class at the expense of the working class, the investors have the deepest moats, most wealth, of anyone in the country, and should share the pain – in fact, they should bear most of it. FYI, I was a worker (an engineer) for most of my life, am retired now and an investor. So yes, this would hit me….as it should.

    • I agree that the money received should be linked to loss of employment income, even if it is partially lost income. Many people (a lot of government employees) have not lost ANY income and are actually seeing more cash in their pockets. This is due to not having transportation costs, meals at work, and childcare costs since they are working remotely. I know this article is about unemployment, and I heartily agree the government needs to extend the benefits! And yes, continue it with the independent contractors. Many are not able to work because their places of employment are closed! But my comment pertains to the expected additional stimulus payments. Why should they go to those who have not lost any income?! And put our country further into debt? Those working from home with full pay/benefits do not NEED the stimulus money, but of course, they are going to accept it. I know that some, like us, passed our stimulus money on to those who have lost jobs. We have examples of both types of workers in our extended family. It is definitely a very divided set of circumstances. You have those with extra money doing massive home improvement projects while others don’t have money for food, shelter and essentials. This is making for an even more divided America.

        • Stop feeling bad for landlords. They are a bunch of sleazy, careless scumbags.. I have nothing good to say about mine.

    • NO! I am an investor class person with one rental unit. The tenant of that one unit has neglected to pay rent for 6 months. They have put me in a position that requires me to secure a loan because believe it or not I am still forced to pay taxes, insurance & maintenance. If you only knew the stress this mess has caused me! I lost my income because rent was not paid. I am 66 years old & now need to go find employment, where & how I am not certain.
I worked all my life & saved for the opportunity to purchase rental property so I could live with more income in my retirement years than simply social security. Now this has put me in a situation that I will have a hard time recovering.
Put yourself in my shoes, I’m sure you find out you are in a better place than me.

  7. This extra money helps families who are down and out at this moment . The poor people really ! Why would u say that my husband MADE more money working then this extra 600 every two weeks he got paid every week with good pay but with his work its either slow or no work comes in . Its a hard time right night now when one parent home with kids while the husband risk to go to work . Especially with 6 kids at home bills are going high rent around 900 a month , water gas 200 , light 380 cable 250 , car insurance 210 car payment 300 , FOOD 500 phones 280 i can keep going on and on . So yes this will help everyone not just the poor people because im not poor . Especially if u have to go to work to help your spouse u still don’t got money for child care . So yes the extra 600 will help us . some of us are not lazy and some of us got paid more while working and getting paid every week then every two week so please think about what u say .

  8. Due to the dynamics of why we the people lost our jobs, the extra unemployment stimulus will help be pay for my house payment and groceries, help keep a roof over our heads and food on my table. I truly sympathies with those that have lost their homes and having to find other ways to live, whether it be with family or government hosing. Times are tougher than a person my age has ever endured. I do now see what my parents and grandparents went through during the 1930’s. And our government help them back them so why can’t our government now help this generation. Helping others out is something I love to do. Maybe if others would try it and feel their inner feeling swell up inside, like filling a deep dark hole and then it’s like breath of fresh clean air. It might be a better world out there. The unemployment plus the $600 additional monies needs to be extended for the people that HAVE NOT been called back to work yet…you take that from them they are in serious trouble….employers are not calling everyone back because business is down…i know someone that works for a doctors office and they have not had everyone return yet she is still furloughed and keeps calling and asking when will she return….no date yet… What I do think is employers that have called people back and they don’t go because they are making more money on UI… employers need to be told that if they allow this and don’t call UI and tell them that the person refusing to return I think the employer should be fined!

    • I have to agree here.
While this scenario does not hit everyone, those in the food service industry and the like are really suffering. Many of the businesses are still operating at 20-30% capacity.
I know a few individuals whom took up jobs from Amazon and such, with the notion of being able to maintain work, only to be ‘laid off’ as these businesses ‘call back’ their staff.
This is literally putting people, once again, on the ‘eviction/foreclosure’ doorsteps. Something needs to be done with an extension of some sort.

Also, it is understandable to ‘some’ people were living well beyond their means during this pandemic. Whilst they may boast and such online, they are not the majority whom have used what they were given to ‘maintain’ what they were already doing for their livelihood.

You still not listening to the real people that hard for their money now laid off and you want to take the only thing that is helping them out is the 600 that help keep food in their children mouth and a roof over their heads you say you are fair what if GOD had not been fair to let HIS SON die on the cross for us all even those that criticize HIM did you pray about what you doing because if you did you would not be doing this and to be so non caring about the people that you may need a vote from. you are right JP Morgan Chase Institute if you really want to see an uproar wait until it expire people would do a lot to take care of their family the same as your mothers and father would do or have done for you all or did you wake up with a silver spoon in so don’t underestimate the less fortunate

  11. The extra benefits are being used for rent, utilities, food and the like in most families. How many people will lose their homes if the $600 in added benefits are not extended? What about the people in the states that have “shut down” again just after they have returned to work? I don’t believe that anyone in congress has any idea what it is like to be furloughed from an already low paying job then have to survive on 80% of that wage. The economy as a whole is certainly not to be ignored but neither is the already struggling family just trying to make ends meet.

    • I agree with what you are saying. I am receiving the PUA unemployent. I have lupus and I’m not able to go to work. Having the PUA unemployment has helped in making sure I get my medication, food on my table, pay to keep a roof over my head, pay my insurance, car and medical. I ran out of regular unemployment and was eligible for extended bi weekly benefits. I can’t live on the amount I received from biweekly benefits. I can’t go to work because of lupus and RA. Is this fair to those like my self who have worked all our lives, and because of no cause of our own can’t chance going to work. I’m a nurse of 38 years and it’s devastating to have to stay home. It’s going to be even worse if they stop the PUA benefit. My doctor won’t sign a release to go to work. My job is aware of the situation. They won’t let me go back to work unless the doctor signs . It’s a cycle. What’s going to happen to people like me? Work all our lives to be told can’t work because of no reason of our own

WUFLU has stopped him dead in his tracks because we are in an aging area and between his health record, although he is well now, and the age of his potential clients it is hard to purchase trees to mark, cut, skid, scale and cut up BY HIMSELF. No one is qualified or sober long enough to work a 4 hour morning with him for $200. I am more fortunate. As a CPA working out of my home am considered an essential worker and have worked non-stop since before WUFLU. I can’t find any qualified help either & for a young person to take a part time job and be forced to lose the $600 is criminal. Plus until schools open what are they going to do. I love President Trump and I know his crafty brain is working on a way to encourage work and keep the extra money as incentive. I would like to train a young lady to help do taxes but can’t afford to send her to Block and make up the $600. Paying for re-training if old job gone and WUFLU damages will get the USA back to Great Again. We don’t need privileged of any color with useless liberal arts degrees and college debt. We need plumbers, hospital workers, builders, equipment operators and the like. Last year they made more money with no debt that snowflakes.

    • You are so spot on Craig, this has to be the worst financial crisis I’ve seen in my 40 plus years in the work force. Our kids will make it through with little to build back on, but being born, bred, and raised on this great continent we all call America, they will survive only with help from our GOD ALMIGHTY and our GREAT LEADERS of this great country. The majority of people will use the stimulus to try and keep life as normal as possible. And your right again on most of those businesses trying to start back up are not offering the same pay and understandably why. Prices of groceries, supplies, hardware and daily needs have escalated above normality and the hourly wage just won’t pay for living expenses. We need all the help this nation can get right now. Sure there are going to be those that abuse the system, but I’d dare say the majority of the ones pointing a finger, has foour pointing back at them.

Dose not mean you should get more. (Facts) You should have saved more, when you had more. Lifestyle inflation is a bi*&^. Almost every American has the same types of payments as you. They are just scaled to ones own lifestyle choices. A guy on here commenting he makes 104k on average annually pre tax’s. Not including his spouses income, and saying he ran out of savings, and wants an extension on FPUA. Its called Rice and beans, you As*hat. You know who you are. Your overpriced house/car payment and (1-5) kids is your issue alone. You have to sleep in the bed you made. Own up to the choices you have previously made, including not saving enough, or living well within reasonable means. JFC.

No one needs to pay $250 a month for cable or phones that’s a choice. Don’t get me started on credit cards…If you think Holiday’s are about buying presents shame on you. No one should make more sitting home then they did working which is a majority of the people getting the $600 extra( not saying you in particular). What will these people do when it finally does end and guess what they still don’t have a job to go to and now they have been spending and charging more because they been making an extra $600 a week. People just need to plan and really get a grip on what is a need and what isn’t.

    • Everyone is struggling in these times. And we all have made financial mistakes. And unfortunately sometimes you might not realize the severity of your financial mistakes until a situation like this arises. That does not justify anyone, from speaking to A FELLOW AMERICAN, in the way that you just did. It’s uncalled for. We all need to be pulling together. Not judging and bashing. My heart goes out to everyone struggling and worrying about the end of July. None of you are alone in this struggle.

      • Thank You Steven for responding to that rude person, sad that they think they know it all and can judge people when they haven’t been in their shoes!! I am 50 yrs old and in the same boat as you Steven but I don’t have a spouse and I am single mother. I didn’t ask to be laid off and now the company I worked for is hurting and was told that the people laid off will never returned as they can’t afford to bring them back, I just stated there then 6 weeks later laid off so no 401k for me and now starting in Aug no health ins. I have been looking for months and no call for any interviews and I have applied for any kind of job, when you been doing the same line of work for over 25 yrs no one will hire you with no experience and yes I am in healthcare industry but the work I do I can’t do anymore as I can’t into my accounts of the nursing homes, hospitals and physicians offices. So I have been applying for everything and 1. your over qualified, 2. no experience, 3. known I did make good money they rather hire someone at a lower pay known that they can keep that person and they won’t look for another job to what they were making before, 4) businesses rather hire younger people, at my age they have to pay more on health insurance to cover us and we are more of a health risk. My unemployment and the $600 was still less than I was making weekly and I have made huge cut backs and had no choice and couldn’t pay some of my bills. Now that the $600 will end this week, I will lose my home, car and be homeless as I have no where to go…I will have to give up my daughter that I have full custody of and it breaks my heart…but I want her to have a roof over her head as I sleep in my car until they repo it!! Also no health insurance and I can’t afford it…my meds alone that I have to take the rest of my life cost $1,000 a month without insurance!! The government doesn’t care to hear the true story of most American’s life…they only talk about how everything is getting better…right, well that is a bunch of lies and just to get votes!! I’m over all of it and drained and tired of crying!!

      • I am sorry Steven you and your family are going through this. I Personally know people getting this extra money that do not deserve it. I’ll explain what I mean by saying that. I know someone that didn’t work a day in his life. He is 42 and Has a lot of kids by different mothers. He never had a job on paper. That means he didn’t pay taxes or report to the IRS. He was getting the PUA. My cousin who has not worked since 2013 except waitressing u dear the table was getting it. She was getting $175 plus the extra 600 until it ran out. They recently started the extra 300 a week for 5 weeks and she got that too and still gets the 175 a week. I know others who have it too and just spend like it’s free money because to them it is. There are a lot of people that are getting it that shouldn’t and there is a flaw in the system. It’s to hard to check everyone applying. When applying every week it says “We’re you trying to look for work?” “If offered a job, would you take it?” Of course everyone says yes. They say they can check and you need proof that your applying but with so many people applying it’s impossible now to check everyone and keep up. Before the pandemic if my husband was laid off and got unemployment in between jobs, they checked everything. Now anyone can say they were looking for work. My cousin hasn’t worked since 2013. Way before the pandemic. There is no reason for her to get it. When filling out the for for PUA she even put her last day of work 2013 and still got it. If there is/was a better way to check everyone the extra money would have gone where it needed to and it might still be available if people did t take advantage of the system. My best friend and sister work hard and still do throughout the pandemic. They work with people that just say they can’t stand working with the mask and they get time off and paid for it. While she keeps going cause she is a boss at Wegmans. My husband works Very hard and was laid off several times throughout the pandemic and still didn’t get paid for the weeks he was off even through he has proof his company shut down due to the Corona Virus.
He is back to work but my point is…a lot of people do not deserve to get it. They didn’t work before the pandemic for years and what suddenly tried to get a job during the pandemic? There are people who need it. And it doesn’t matter if some one made good money and didn’t save it for situations like this. They don’t have to save and they can spend their hard earned money on whatever they want they worked for it. The government needs a better way to detect fraud. There would be money for the people that have worked their whole lives and lost their jobs to this pandemic. I haven’t worked since 2018 because if several back surgeries not because of the pandemic. I couldn’t even get disability since the surgeries and I worked up until 2018 it really isn’t fair to the people that deserve it. To the woman who is living in her car, I am sorry and apologize for what’s happening to you and your daughter. I apologize for the idiots that get it and don’t deserve it and for the way our government runs. You deserve it. People that have worked deserve it. It’s sad what’s happening and there are way to many people getting the money that don’t deserve it. That is why The money ran out.

The fellow you spoke of sounds disorganized and lacked in planning…He does not represent a large majority of families who save and, yes, probably eating “rice and beans”, etc…No one asked for covid to take away our jobs and lives….If you lost your job in pre pandemic times due to a lay off or even firing, you were eventually able to find another job eventually….Now, there are little or no jobs to be had….So, $600.00 a week or a compromise thereabouts is a drop in the survival bucket for the time being…….Be safe, be well and be strong….

  13. Until such time as the unemployment rate by state is back to where it was pre-pandemic then the Feds should pay the Unemployment bendfit. IF they prefer I am fine IF they pay me for the income lost under the emminent domain laws. IF they take or close your business they owe you for the value of the property or the loss in income. Where is that — every small business owner wants to work and save their business, but if they are not allowed to open then they are due whatever their losses are.

Trump and Republicans said that the poor people are making more in UI than working so they don’t want them to get paid more lol and should go out there and work for peanuts..They then said that the ones getting the PUA are SAVING money and not spending it which hurts the economy, but then I read comments from some republican voters claiming the ones getting the checks are spending it on drugs, gambling, and junk food and they claim its all illegals, minorities and those who are protesting getting the assistance. Then they said that they don’t want people to get Skills Atrophy.

Why is everything they are saying has nothing to do with what got is in this situation a natural disaster a coronavirus outbreak that affected the entire country and shut down businesses, a virus from another country that is out of our hands and the common working man had nothing to do with?

They gave out more millions to wealthy celebrities, business CEOs than a 600 dollar bonus check for unemployed people combined. Yet they are attacking the working class many of them blue collar republicans who are their voting demographic who also got affected by the virus.

The tax rates for them were lowered as incentive to bring jobs back from China to America and make decent paying jobs available to Americans. I did a fellows tax return yesterday and (of course living in the country kids sometimes have a different attitude cause they’re poor to begin with) this fellows grandson just graduated from 8th grade and already knows he wants to run heavy equipment (you know the extremely well paid ruggedly handsome guys working in the highways, bridges, big buildings, etc.
We have a training facility for that in our county, grandpa took his grandson there and the kid is already as good as most of the students. When he graduates from high school he goes right to trade school and they find him a job. Period.

All I know is for sure is I am putting my trust in nothing, but hope for whatever people need will be provided rather through the government, family and friends or just start a business and dream big! We got this! We will get through it! We are in this together! My journey may not be your journey but we need positive oxygen for the stress

  16. I find it extremely disturbing that those who are employed think that those of us who are not, are just deadbeats trying to scam the system, or that “moving the economy” means throwing us under the bus. I have worked since I was 14 years old, putting myself through college, and I had the same job for 38 years and loved it. I paid my taxes, to the tune of almost a third of my income and now find myself in the terrible position of trying to find a job in my field at the age of 63. I’m a workaholic. I don’t take handouts. But if the $600 UI benefit is NOT extended, I will most likely lose my home, my pets, and end up in the streets. Please have a heart. Understand that blanket statements about those now facing joblessness and ageism in the marketplace is very real, and very scary. They need to extend this benefit, at least till 2021, so those of us having a hard time finding employment have time to do so and not lose our homes.

I think that the$600.00 should be divided to benefit both causes. I have people saying “why should I go back to work”? This is very unfair to others.

I told my boss they need to furlough me if this is extended and I will come back once I stop making more at home then I do working. Good economics right…Just curious does anyone these days say hey…If I were to get laid off or fired (Non Pandemic World) could I afford everything I am signing my name too??? My wife and I live with 1 financial rule…Our bills will not exceed what the lowest earner in our home makes…When I was single I didn’t live beyond Max unemployment bring home…I don’t accept any veteran benefits i’m entitled to as I know there are veterans that need it more than I…Wake up people…Just because a bank says they will give you the money doesn’t mean you have to accept it…This is not directed at you Jon it just happened to be where I clicked reply..>Everyone’s situation is different but I know way too many people squandering the extra $600 so it is giving the responsible people a bad name.

      • People on SSI or SS are receiving what they were before the pandemic so at they have a steady income that they are used to living with. They also have Medicare if 65 y/o and if they have been disabled for 24 they also qualify for Medicare, if it’s not enough they should be applying for Medicaid or go to work and make what is allowable under SS. So actually they have it better than most right now.

Because of the virus, food and a lot of other thing have gone way up do to the shortage with factory shut down. NO he is not able to work. He has worked since he was 13 until he was 68 in low paying jobs. I feel people on SS should get extra each month to help them make ends meet. No he does not qualify for food stamp because they say he makes to much. Yes we help him but what about the ones out there with out family to help them.

      • I agree I want to also add I know someone personally who was called back to a good service job making 100-250 a night in tips plus he gets 600+ his 438 weekly in unemployment over 4000 a month he has no kids and choose to stay in a drug infested motel where he buys drugs daily while eaten red lobster weekly he also got the 1200 stimulus check on top of his nightly tips and the 600 plus 438. There families out here struggling and dying from COVID-19 and this man I know is living life to the fullest. I don’t get it how did he get all of this and yet other people don’t have jobs now didn’t get 1200 stimulus let alone 600 plus unemployment. If the man I know gets a extension after July 31st 2020 I’m going be convinced that the government not looking out for the families that need help they supporting drug addicts instead

  18. I feel they should extend the $600 because they are not looking at the overall big picture and I believe there are some things they are not telling us. The statistics they are looking at are the one of a middle class and upper class families the lower are the ones that are suffering the most. They work hard and now you want to take away the things that have kept them afloat. So you all need to look at the overall jobless and tell the people the truth about how the unemployment really look like. Congress and the republicans will never know how it is to be considered as lower class or what it is like to struggle to your head afloat for your children sake

  19. I am in the same situation. I gross on average 2000$ a week. My company had to lay me off when the pandemic started. I had savings, but it took so long for the extra 600 weekly my savings has been depleted, lost my health insurance, and I love what I do and would much rather be working than setting home. The problem from what I see is Trump administration being concerned about those collecting more by not working. The easy solution is to draft a bill and utilize the prior 3 months income an individual was making, and if it is well over the benefit amount then we should get continued help. It is the lazy individuals as well as thieves that take advantage of this ongoing challenge to put cash in there pocket for free. Personally I have a lot of pride, and hate utilizing Government assistance, but at this point pride is last of my concern. I have a home, family and have only used UI once when I was layed off for 3 weeks. I make way more working, so the possibility of looosing that extra money is stressful to say the least

Anyway to sum it up. I live in Massachusetts bust my ass working 40 hours as a CNA/M.A making $13/ hour. Rent being $2,000 nothing included with 2 kids. (I live in a building BTW in the not good part of town lol…no yard no parking) wah wah rant over. My point issss, I TOTALLY get why people are pissed that someone like me is actually making more NOT working.. And now they are helping me with food also…. It feels wicked weird to have been able to pay everything on time last month honestly, no daycare bill etc
and it isn’t fair to some,
It is SO ASS BACKWARD I could go on and on.

      Reply
      • No – what is ass backward is the fact you have to bust your ass to make $13/hour, especially given the nature of your work. The minimum wage amounts throughout the country are often not enough for a person to sustain themselves and family, and people value other, less important, work more so we have a disparity where you can barely make rent working hard and someone else makes enough money for 3 generations in less than on year.
You are not doing anything wrong – being able to pay your bills on time is a minimum expectation. And don’t forget there is a positive economic impact when you can pay your bills on time and buy food, etc. Many businesses of all sizes are permanently closing, not just because of forced closures, but because people that had income loss cannot afford to patronize the business – the business closes down and jobs are lost, and so on.
Lastly, remember that you pay unemployment taxes through your income tax deductions – it serves as insurance – and even the FPUC is largely financed by prior federal taxes that we all pay through income.

If only we had politicians who were actual LEADERS and not overpaid millionaires yelling at one another on capitol hill, maybe we would have an effective government! They are supposed to be PUBLIC SERVANTS, not multi- millionaires, not ROYALTY!! I am willing to bet that if the politicians in DC ,(both Republican and Democrat… they’re all the same in my book), took a HUGE pay cut, or better yet, a FREEZE put on their lucrative wages and perks, we’d see things getting done, and the American people taken care of.

Once my extended UI benefits end, my family’s health insurance ends. I am extremely nervous about our future. I hope the UI benefits are extended.

  24. I don’t think benefits should be extended across the board. Of course, those who are truly unemployment should be able to collect enhanced unemployment benefits for an extended period. On the hand, many workers have jobs, some form or another, to return but are refusing because of the enhanced unemployment benefits. If states had a better system determining those who are truly unemployed and those who choose to be unemployed, then it would eliminate the problem of work refusal. Businesses are required to enforce social distancing in the workplace, and provide sanitation and PPE to protect employees from COVID_19; therefore, workers should return to those jobs that they had before this pandemic. The other thing we must keep in mind is that many employers are not necessarily requiring workers to return the usual 5-day work week, yet again workers are choosing not to return. If a state has meet the Phase 5 stage, then workers, in general, should not have a chose on whether they return or not to work. Business operations is very much dependent on having an available workforce to sustain and help our economy get back to where we were.

Getting rich on other people’s suffering is evil but since slavery times doing so has been normalized here. So Cheryl would you work full time for 1200 $ per month with no health insurance, risking your life daily in a city where you pay for rent $ 900, what would you be able to do with another $ 300 ? With that being said, I would still feel uncomfortable going back to work (in the office) for the following reasons (1) Not enough testing in my state (2) I don’t believe my company with live up to the standard guidelines in regards to social distancing. In addition, I have an underlying condition, If you are able to work from home, you should continue until a treatment or cure is found. You should not be fired if you decide not to return to the office.

If not called back to work on or before July 31, 2020, the benefits should be extended until December 31, 2020. There will be more layoff due to this virus after July 31, 2020. We will have a second wave!!!! due to all the people who were protesting and the economy opening up too soon.

I have a son that use to works part-time at a restaurant. If the $600 weekly benefit expires on July 31,2020 and he is not called back to work, than what happens? Part-time workers have bills as well. The restaurants are only calling back 25% of there staff. The bottom line, people are afraid to go back to work due to no ongoing testing!!!!!!and no treatment for this deadly virus.

    • I hear ya Dee. I just lost my job after 22 yrs because of the virus and I want to get back to work so bad I can taste it. Government is telling us that more testing is needed to know for sure and will help them get the economy open. More testing is being done and they’re seeing the virus is much more wide spread than they anticipated and they will continue to close down. So, there’s no solution with our without the testing at this point. The only thing that will help resolve this pandemic is a viable and effective vaccine. Until then, we’re all stuck at home, and even then, we’re still at risk because health officials believe the virus is mutating and is now airborne (not proven yet, but you’ll hear them make that official soon.). I’ve got an elderly Mother that lives with me and I have mortgage payments. Even with my experience, the industry I’m in is flooded with applicants and employers are ghosting applicants because they can. Everyone trying to get back to work wants to work–I’m one of them. I have never been on unemployment and If I can help it, I never will be again. I need that extra $600 so my Mom and I don’t end up on the streets. So, I’m scared.

REALLY!? how about everyone is trying their best to get through this ordeal hopefully without their family having to feel the depth of the effects it’s had on the entire world. Is it so bad to want to be in a place where your not having to worry how you will feed your family because of a situation you dont want to be in? I agree, those that are given the opportunity to go back to work but don’t should be cut off, but why put another one in the grave because of one that is giving the chance to work again? Government handouts have historically never worked, just creates a form of Welfare dependency. So if you think I’m even at a equal place financially right now you’re stupid. Finally like most of us I would much rather hold my head high and take pride in working hard every day like I normally do instead of taking what’s called hand outs or welfare wrongly because I’ve worked and paid my taxes from 18-40 years old 22 years I’ve been I good little worker and I ain’t getting hand outs I’m getting looked out for by the country I look out for my whole life. • I don’t disagree with your statement in theory, Robert. But that theory, like many, doesn’t exactly match the reality. IF employers do what THEY are supposed to do, they will report employees who refuse to come back to work, and those recipients’ benefits will end. So if there is abuse in terms of individuals remaining unemployed by choice, it is on the head of business, not workers or the agency. I do agree that the $600/wk additional is more than it should be in some regions. Perhaps it should be adjusted based upon local data (like state maximum weekly benefits are set), and based on the last 12 months of earnings of the employee (as are the state benefits). Lastly, if there is no work, employees cannot “just go back to work” whether they want to or not. And just as importantly, giving employers relief from payroll taxes will not add jobs. If employers have nothing for additional employees to do, they will not create jobs for folks to sit around, just because they don’t have to pay a fraction of the salary in payroll taxes.
