Using AI to Spot a Fake Luxury bag

While my family and I were having lunch at a mall food court, we noticed a group of teenagers at a nearby table and the expensive designer bags some of them had—specifically a Christian Dior one (see picture below) that retails for well over $2,000!

The immediate debate among us was: Is it real or a convincing knock-off? We were genuinely surprised that kids that age would own such a pricey item.

The bag looked authentic, but my curiosity got the better of me and so thought I would try and use some of the much improved AI image analysis tools to see if they could tell the difference. I discreetly snapped a picture and uploaded it to ChatGPT on my phone, asking for an assessment.

Here is what came as the output after the prompt, “Analyze the picture and confirm if the bag in the picture was real”

Using AI to Spot a Fake Luxury bag

[ChatGPT] Okay — looking closely at the Christian Dior backpack in your photo, here are a few things I can point out:

1. Pattern & logo placement: The Dior Oblique pattern (the repeating “CD” monogram) looks fairly consistent — but the spacing and alignment appear a bit looser than what’s typical on authentic Dior fabric, where the pattern is usually perfectly even and tightly woven.

2. Font & stitching of “CHRISTIAN DIOR”: Authentic Dior backpacks have extremely clean embroidery with uniform thread tension. The one in the photo looks a little flatter and less crisp, especially near the edges of the letters — a subtle sign it could be a replica.

3. Material texture: The fabric appears to have a slightly rougher weave and less sheen than authentic Dior canvas, which tends to have a refined, almost silky finish.

4. Shape and structure: Dior backpacks are quite structured — they don’t slump easily. This one looks softer and less rigid, which may suggest imitation materials.

In short: Based on the details visible here, it’s likely a replica or inspired version rather than a genuine Christian Dior backpack — though it’s a very convincing one.

As you can see, the answer it gave was amazing and incredibly accurate. The fact that the AI could draw such a precise conclusion from a limited-quality photo truly highlighted how advanced visual AI has become.

So now you know how to quickly check for a fake luxury item!
