Do I Need to Take Any Action or Reapply To Get Extended Unemployment Benefit Weeks Under PUA, PEUC, EB or $300 FPUC – Updated for September 2021 Extension

Enhanced unemployment benefits have been extended twice in 2021 following the initial rollout and funding in 2020. You can jump to the relevant extension via the links below to get more details on the claimant actions and key dates around getting unemployment benefits under each of the extensions. These are based on general Department of Labor (DOL) guidelines and you should refer to your state UI website for more information

Biden ARP Extension (March 15th, 2021 to September 6th, 2021)

Based on past and soon to be released DOL guidelines for state unemployment agencies we can infer what actions claimants need to take (if any) based on the status of their claim as of March 15th, 2021 (or week ending March 20th or 21st depending on state). This date is important since it is the first week of funding for the latest unemployment extensions until September 6th. Refer to the prior CAA update below for rules and key dates related to that program’s extension rules and coverage. Since state unemployment agencies and departments are updating their systems for the latest extensions you will have to be patient on getting paid and being able to certify for the extended weeks.

Actively filing for PUA as of March 15th, 2021 (i.e. have a remaining balance) with no previous PEUC claim: No action is needed in this scenario to receive additional extended benefit weeks. Once your state UI agency updates their IT programs and systems to add these weeks you should see your claim balance or remaining weeks updated. Claimants should continue to file your claim and certify each week.

Actively filing for PUA with previous PEUC claim: Action is needed from the claimant: You will likely have to reapply for the PEUC program since you can only collect PUA if you have exhausted any entitlement to PEUC. Because of the additional PEUC benefits available, you are no longer eligible to receive PUA. If you continue to be unemployed or partially unemployed, you must reopen your existing PEUC claim.

Actively filing for PEUC: No action is needed from the claimant: If you are currently filing a claim under the Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) program the maximum amount of benefits available under the PEUC program increased from 24 weeks to 53 weeks. However the maximum weeks of coverage is only 25.

Individuals no longer filing or have exhausted their unemployment benefits: Action is needed from the claimant. If you are unemployed or partially unemployed after March 15th, 2021 you will need to reopen your PUA or PEUC claim to get coverage for the additional weeks of coverage. Claimants will need to go to their state specific UI site to file their claim or reactivate an existing claim. The process and documentation requirements will vary by state.

Actively filing for Extended Benefits: No action is needed from the claimant. If you had previously exhausted your claim for Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) and are currently filing a claim under the Extended Benefits (EB) program, no action is needed from you right now. Continue to file your claim each week for the EB program. If you later exhaust EB and continue to be unemployed or partially unemployed, you may be eligible to reopen your PEUC claim and collect these additional benefits.

Getting the $300 FPUC Payment. No action is needed from the claimant: Starting with week ending March 20th, 2021 if you are eligible for at least $1 of your underlying unemployment benefit amount for any week of unemployment, you will also receive a $300 supplemental payment under the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) program. You do not need to take any additional action to receive this supplemental payment and will get it once your state UI agency updates their systems to make this payment (see the $300 FPUC state payment tracker)

Getting the $100 Mixed Earners Compensation Payment: Action is needed from the claimant. If you were previously self-employed while also getting W2 (employer) income you may be eligible for an additional $100 supplemental payment under the Mixed Earners Unemployment Compensation (MEUC) program. This is provided in addition to FPUC for non-PUA recipients. You will need to file a claim with supporting documentation for this extra payment with your state UI agency.

I will update with more details once the DOL releases final guidelines and you can follow us via the options below.

CAA Unemployment Extension (December 27th to March 14th 2021)

With the extension of enhanced unemployment programs under the Continued Assistance for Unemployed Workers Act of 2020 (COVID Relief Bill) many readers are asking if they need to take any action to get the extra 11 weeks of coverage or supplementary $300 payment between December 27th, 2020 and March 14th, 2021. Based on recent Department of Labor guidelines to state unemployment agencies we can infer what actions claimants need to take (if any) based on the status of their claim as of week ending December 26th, 2020. This date is important since it is the end of funding under the CARES act (prior stimulus bill which funded these enhanced UI programs). The new COVID funding relief bill only funds payments after this date starting from December 27th, 2020. Since state unemployment agencies and departments are updating their systems for the new changes you will have to be patient on getting paid and being able to certify for the extended weeks.

Scenario: Actively filing for PUA as of Dec 26th, 2020 (i.e. have a remaining balance) with no previous PEUC claim

If you are currently filing a claim under the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program, your coverage has now been extended from 39 weeks to 50 weeks. This excludes any weeks of unemployment compensation (UC) or Extended State Benefits (EB) you may have been eligible for since January 27, 2020. No action is needed in this scenario to receive additional extended benefit weeks. Claimants should continue to file your claim and certify each week.

UI claimants who have had a significant gap in getting unemployment benefits or exhausted their original PUA benefits prior to or before December 26th, 2020 will be able to file for the extended weeks once their state UI system has been updated with the new extensions and associated program changes (see FPUC state tracker). Depending on state they may have to reopen, refile or reactivate their claim. Additional PUA benefits may only be collected for weeks ending on or after December 27, 2020.

Example (Active PUA claim): Mike was getting PUA and in continued filing status up through the week ending 12/26/20, and still had a balance remaining. With the new legislation and funding, Mike can continue to file his weekly certifications beginning with the week ending 1/02/21. He won’t have to reopen his claim. He will also be eligible to get the additional $300 extra FPUC payment.

Example (Exhausted PUA claim balance): Charlene exhausted her PUA benefits on 12/12/2020 and has a zero claim balance. She was unable to get any extended state benefits. In this situation, Charlene will need to wait for her state to implement the new PUA changes (i.e. additional documentation requirements to fight fraud) before being able reopen or reactivate her existing claim. If she is in a new benefit year, she may have to file a new claim and be denied for regular UI before getting PUA. In either situation her state UI agency will provide directions on next steps, but Charlene will likely face delays due to the time it will take states to roll out the new extensions. [I will keep posting updates on this site and encourage you to subscribe to get the latest news]

Actively filing for PUA with previous PEUC claim: Action is needed from the claimant

If you previously exhausted your claim for Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) and are currently filing a claim under the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program, you will have to reapply for the PEUC program since you can only collect PUA if you have exhausted any entitlement to PEUC. Because of the additional PEUC benefits available, you are no longer eligible to receive PUA. If you continue to be unemployed or partially unemployed, you must reopen your existing PEUC claim. Your state UI agency will send instructions on how to do this and will vary on a state by state basis. Note that your PEUC claim may have a different weekly benefit amount due versus your PUA benefit to the differing calculation to state UI benefits.

Actively filing for PEUC: No action is needed from the claimant

If you are currently filing a claim under the Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) program the maximum amount of benefits available under the PEUC program increased from 13 weeks to 24 weeks. If you are in this situation with an active claim balance (up to and including the week ending December 26th, 2020) no action should be necessary and you start UI agency will start paying benefits from December 27, 2020. If may take a week or two for your state agency to start paying benefits, which will be retroactively caught up.

Individuals no longer filing or have exhausted their unemployment benefits: Action is needed from the claimant

If you are unemployed or partially unemployed after December 27, 2020 you will need to reopen your PUA or PEUC claim to get coverage for the 11 weeks of extended coverage. They will need to go to their state specific UI site to file their claim or reactivate an existing claim. The process and documentation requirements will vary by state.

Actively filing for Extended Benefits: No action is needed from the claimant

If you had previously exhausted your claim for Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) and are currently filing a claim under the Extended Benefits (EB) program, no action is needed from you right now. Continue to file your claim each week for the EB program. If you later exhaust EB and continue to be unemployed or partially unemployed, you may be eligible to reopen your PEUC claim and collect these additional benefits.

Getting the $300 FPUC Payment. No action is needed from the claimant

Starting with week ending January 2, 2021, if you are eligible for at least $1 of your underlying unemployment benefit amount for any week of unemployment, you will also receive a $300 supplemental payment under the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) program. You do not need to take any additional action to receive this supplemental payment and will get it once your state UI agency updates their systems to make this payment (see the $300 FPUC state payment tracker)

Getting the $100 Mixed Earners Compensation Payment: Action is needed from the claimant

If you were previously self-employed you may be eligible for an additional $100 supplemental payment under the Mixed Earners Unemployment Compensation (MEUC) program. If you are eligible for the MEUC program and are paid at least $1 of your underlying unemployment benefit amount for any week of unemployment, you will also receive a $100
supplemental MEUC payment. This is provided in addition to FPUC. After you submit documentation and the state confirms your information, you do not need to take any additional action to receive this supplemental payment. Continue to file your claim each week for the unemployment benefit you are currently receiving.

  1. Was on EB in Ohio, program ended, last payment was on Dec. 29, 2020. Kept filing claims, but never getting paid. Claim year ended January 23, 2021, started a new claim on January 24, 2021, received a “red letter” envelope on UI dashboard stating I was approved for an 11 week extension for PEUC. I have heard ZERO info since. Received ZERO payments since December 29, 2020. Called ODJFS reps they say my claim is limbo. One stated my claim is “stuck” and nothing can be done and to quit calling. No one has made any effort to correct my claim, even by phone. WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT THIS?!?!

  3. I applied for PA unemployment last March and have yet to get any thing. My claim was originally denied because they said I was a contract employee. But I submitted all my 2019 paystubs and have waited ever since. Each time I am finally able to reach someone at unemployment via phone, they tell me my claim is active and I’ll just have to wait. It’s been almost 1 year since I filed. I contacted a lawyer but was told until the claim is either denied or approved, they can’t help me. Any suggestions on how I can get action on my claim?

  5. As of 3/7/2021 it says my PUA is exhausted. I am getting my last payment of 195 plus the 300. This is the only thing I have received through unemployment. Is there anything else I can apply for? With what I am reading everything you can apply for is in order and the PUA is last in line. I’m figuring I’m pretty much screwed with nothing else to apply for.

I’m on PEUC now. I’m not sure if I’ll need to reapply at end of May to collect the new PEUC which ends Sept. 6th.
        Any ideas?
        Thanks ahead of time.

  7. I don’t know what to do Dec 12th I was cut off PUA benefits or they stopped in ohio and had 7 weeks remaining still. It finally let me file for those 7 weeks and I got paid the 300 Federal and half my benefit amount but now it says no weeks remaining and I still only received 7 out of the 11 weeks of federal 300. Will this recalculate itself or? Do I get the extra 4 weeks of federal 300$ for the 4 weeks left or? Does anyone know ? Thanks

    • I received an FUTURE PUA EXHAUSTION ALERT email stating I had 2 weeks of PUA left (for WED 12/19 & 12/26/20) but, I did not get paid for WED 12/26/20 because my BYE on 12/21/2020. I never received a BYE Letter from GDOL as the website states they will send. I’m betting your Benefit Year ended & you have to file a new claim as I did; I keep certifying PUA so I can do the backdate forms when I apply for PUA once I’m denied UI. They will base your eligibility on the first 2 of the last five quarters–be sure to see page 10 in the UI Claimant Handbook. Be careful about answering 2 of the questions on a new claim; I Resigned from my job not due to Risk of Covid-19, one question (employer’s fault), but due to potential risk of Covid-19, another question after (PUA eligible). I was calling & emailing GDOL to no avail & finally figured it out & filed my new claim on 2/13/21! That’s my new Benefit Year Start Date which is good for 1 year. I hope this helps you work through this, good luck! And, God Bless you.

    • The response you received to your comment is incorrect. Claimants who exhausted their federal pandemic unemployment benefits after December 26, 2020, should have new benefit balances (covering the 11-week extension) added to their PUA and PEUC claims. Keep certifying as long as you can. I know you haven’t been able to file but that is simply a programming malfunction. Either chat with a rep or call the help line and they will file for you manually while you are on the phone. If you need help feel free to call me on 216-647-3860 sincerely, Robin

    • Hey look, you need to go online & apply to SNAP for food stamps right now! They have a Pandemic supplement too! It’s easier to get help right now. You should get all your last bills together in a folder on your pc; you can take pics from your phone & upload via email, then save; but if you don’t have a printer like me, you can click print & save as pdf which is what you want for submitting via email to charities in your area. I did because my electric got cut off & couldn’t pay my rent for waiting on PUA to pay only to find out my BYE & I had to file a new claim; after 2 months! Call or go online to 211 or text 898-211 like I did for charities that serve your area; it saved me. Be sure to click on the Details for each result; getting my rent paid only required the last 30 days of bills not a year or anything like that & their pay Feb. & March 2021. The power company will work with you to reconnect within 24 hours if you’ve got kids & contacting charities for help; they just want to know you’re being truthful about your need; they reconnected me with a promise to pay 2 wks. out & I got help that paid it in full thru 211. Start pulling the rabbits out of your hat & work through it instead of stressing out & panicking; don’t do that. I have no one else to depend on; I had to manage it & they helped me. And, you need to file a new claim but see how they calculate Wage Base in the UI Handbook first so that you know what you’re doing & what to expect going forward before you file a new claim; if you file a new claim between Jan.-March then your Wage Base is calculated using the first 2 of the last 5 quarters: Oct.-Dec. year before last & Jan.-March of last year so do not wait because like I haven’t worked since April of last year but I work full-time those 2 quarters. They take the highest of those 2 quarters gross and divide it by 42=your benefit amout which may exceed the max. benefit of $365 PUA.

  9. Can someone please help me ?!
I filed in CA in July- at least 3 times apparently wrong and the pua unemployment said my employer never reported my wages, I sent them and they also never received them. I kept calling and never go through until I gave up, tried again in the beginning of December and finally got through before trump signed the bill where no one can receive back pay prior to that. So I reported my wages again at that time and she told me I was all set. Never saw anything updated until I called AGAIN in JAN, she mentioned that I never stated it was due to COVID when I first filed.. IDK what I was doing I put reduced wages. no one told me this prior to that date in Jan that I made a mistake SO now I have a new claim date with no backpay and I’m moving so I have to quit my job. Now someone is suppose to call me and that is the deciding factor weather i am approved of not since trump signed that bill??? I’m lost and disappointed. Now I have to wait for a phone call and the decision will be based on what how they feel and what I say I did? What can I do to get the benefits owed to me?? Please help if you have anymore information!

      • What about if you exhausted before Dec. 27th? In Ohio, thousands ran out of PUA the week before Christmas, not after. I have received a total of 46 weeks of PUA. It shows on my claim that I’m exhausted. The week ending the first week in feb was the last week that was paid (that brought me to 46 total weeks. Everything is zeroed out. Where’s the extra 4 weeks?
Again..thousands ran out the week BEFORE christmas.

I waited 10 weeks before my claim was even approved and paid…Not looking forward to another 2 month wait..

Thank you for your advice, the Jobs4tn site is pretty arcane.

  12. I was on regular unemployment and reached the maximum amount of benefits on Jan 4th 2021. Mine is extended until April of this year. I got an email a couple days after I exhausted my benefits, that if I qualify for an extension it will do it automatically but I’ve been waiting for a month and still nothing. Anyone else? Or are you still waiting for extension as well? I haven’t run across anyone in my situation that exhausted it in the beginning of this month. Also I can’t open a new claim until my benefit year is up in April but I’m still unemployed and can’t wait that long to keep getting benefits. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • Was collecting unemployment for the entire year (2020). I exhausted those benefits on December 27. That included all the extensions as well. My claim status says “FILED” and had an amount in the “WBR”. Hitting the “What does this mean” link, tells me that I need to do nothing, and the extent should kick in automatically. But may take 1-2 weeks. And I shouldn’t certify weekly until I get an email from them. Some people say I need to reopen! Others say doing that will prolong any payments. I’ve worked steady for 30+ years! And I’ve never had an issue. My 19 year old daughter, who makes LESS than I do, got the extension, AND the extra $300 on top of that! I need to know what to do here! I have child support, bills, and rent! Made very good money in my career, and I can’t get a job based on others willing to take a lower pay! I’m just a 50 year old father of two, who’s currently unemployed, and had to move back home to care for my father! This is important, and shouldn’t be disregarded as “we’re very busy and will get to all of you eventually”. It’s no time on their part to send out an automated email, to let us know what to do! Anyone with advice?…much appreciated!

I went through the same thing & it took 2 months to figure it out. I’m going to fill out forms to Request for Backdate once I get approved.

How long is this supposed to take? Or under the new act…are they extending claims and paying peuc on those that the benefit year just ended?

  16. I’m in Ca. March 2020 I was denied regular EDD but qualified for PUA. I’m an Independent contractor & self employed. In November I got the PUA extension for extra weeks. Dec 26 mine ended too. 1/13/21 I finally saw an update. A link to “reopen”. I was hesitant to click it because EDD site says don’t do anything and EDD will automatically recalculate and extend soon. 1/15/21 I caved and clicked “reopen”. I completed the whole Reopen online form. It was submitted & confirmation showed that it went through. This morning I checked EDD and it has a link to “ Reopen “ again. Now I’m confused, did it not submit correctly or is their a glitch in their system? I should have never clicked reopen in the first place, I reopened and filled out the online questions the first time and now it’s saying to Reopen again. I’m so confused. I hope I didn’t mess it up more. Anyone else have this issue?

    • @Lisa I have the reopen link on my husbands account also. Like you he is a independent contractor. His ended 12/31/2020 but he had a balance of over $5000. We got the first message saying you don’t need to do anything EDD will recalculate and either inbox (on UI Online), texted or email when you can certify for weeks. He then got the same message as you saying if you haven’t certified in a while you need or you never certified for the benefit year…you need to reopen. It was confusing. I searched high and low for the answer because I was scared to reopen and cause other problems. What I found was: people on PUA Do Not need to reopen if they had a balance remaining when the federal payments expired in Dec. The EDD will recalculate and send you a notice when you can start certifying again. If you Did Not have a balance when the federal payments expired then YES You Do Need to reopen your claim. If you reopened the claim and you had a balance remaining then it will slow down the calculation process. I’m hoping they just kick out your reopen application if you had a balance. Some people said when they click the reopen for PUA it told them they didn’t need to submit that application. The only other suggestion I can give is to either call (which is a joke) or click on the “ASK EDD” button on the website or the “CONTACT US” good luck Lisa and God Bless

    • You have to reapply for regular unemployment and get rejected so that you can apply for pua. I think that you clicked submit but it did not go through. I did the same thing. I had to redue it and I saw that I was missing something. They send an email to you if it is submitted.

      • Cali PUA here…@John Same here, except my husbands apply month. DO NOT Reopen. Thats is an error for PUA. The EDD will recalculate and they will send you a notice either UI online inbox, email or text. I’ve been checking every couple of days since the new fed extention. My husband literally just got a notice he had weeks to certify available on Wed. Then he got his money on his debit card last night (2 days). 2 things though 1.) When you get your notice to certify, and you fill out the first 2 weeks, you have to click on the certify button a couple of times to get all of your back weeks. It dosen’t tell you. 2.) It won’t show the extra $300. After you certify, click on History at the top. Slide over to & click on transaction, then it will take you to a page that will show you total at the bottom. Your base and the $300. You can click on the blue detail button for the break down. Good luck.

    • Hi Lisa, I don’t know if it’s relevant but here’s an update from my first reply. You don’t need to click the reopen button even if you DON’T have a balance. EDD will recalculate PUA. Thats is for people who have regular UB. From what I read on EDD website, if you clicked reopen then you should get paid for that week you get approved on, and the previous weeks you’re owed from Dec end time will take a little longer. It will come but it slows down the back weeks process.

  17. Hi All,
From Virginia, on January 3rd 2021, I was trying to file for my weekly unemployment claim for W/E 1/2/2021, the unemployment system took me back to W/E 12/26/2020 and stop me there. There was no other option where I can process the weekly certification. Since then the system is not allowing me to certify for my weekly claim. Although I have exhausted PUA (39 weeks), but with the new legislation, the benefit have been extended for additional weeks for the PUA. Can someone let me know how I can move forward with the weekly certification to get the benefit that I am intitle to?

Your assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated.

    My Best,

  18. I am also confused. I filed for unemployment in NJ due to covid March 22, 2021. I exhausted my regular benefits and got was told to certify the following week that I wouldn’t have to do anything and I received an additional amount of weeks but I have no way to find out how many on the unemployment website. So which program did I just exhaust my benefits from. My last check on this new extension that exhausted my benefits was on 01/02/2021. Do I reopen a claim now?

Slowly but surely everyone is getting what they’re anticipating so at the very least, if you feel like you are waiting way longer than everybody else, the phone lines should be freeing up more and more each day. In theory. Hope everybody gets whats they need!

  22. I am very confused. I know that my pua was exhaused as of Dec 31st. I heard that there was an extention so I looked to see if I recieved anything. I recieved a message saying I need to refile a claim. When I clicked on the link, it said do NOT file a claim if your benefits have been exhaused. I have literally called EDD for 3 days straight and have called for 6-8 hrs a day with no connection to a live person. The only other message I recieved was about filing taxes. The only other thing I can do is wait because it is exhausting, confusing and frustrating. If anyone is able to get some real answers, please let us know.

    • To all those in a state of confusion as I was. Be patient, today I was finally able to log in and certify for benefits, it back dated to Dec. 27th for the 2 weeks. i did not reopen my claim, and fill out the long forms we did while applying the very first time, so don’t waste time doing that. My opinion it will take the system longer to sort out the confusion. On the other hand a family member who owned a business, their EDD has not been updated yet and they are on a slightly different claim, I believe pandemic. Anyhow, wait and check througout this week.

    • @Mary I found a help link to ask questions in the EDD website. I asked if I needed to so anything to get the 11 weeks of PUA. They said they if you have a PUA claim, they will recalculate your benefit amount and contact you through UI Online, mail or text when you can certify for your next benefit payment. It also said they are updating the system and we do not need to contact EDD. They will contact you. So what I get is be patient. We need to wait for them to contact us. We Do Not need to reopen our claim. They are taking care of the regular unemployment and Fed Ed first then the people with a PUA claim that ended on Dec 26 then the people on PEUA thats the order. I know some write to continue submitting your certify form, thats for reg UI. The EDD dis not upload the certify form to his UI online account. It previously said don’t do anything EDD will recalculate and contact…now it has the Blue Button to REOPEN but that is for the people who they listed below the button( people who received a notice from their job or union). We have to just wait for EDD. I hope this helps. God bless.

Expired on Dec. 26th of course and like most people I still have a claim balance left. Has anyone had any success reopening? Getting conflicted messages. To reopen or not to reopen, that is the question…

    • Per CA EDD. “If you stop certifying for continued benefits, and it’s been more than 30 days since you last certified for benefits, your Unemployment Insurance (UI) claim becomes inactive. You must reopen your claim to request benefit payments.” Sounds like you need to reopen your claim and then follow the instructions recievied to keep getting payments.

It’s really unfair the non communication we are receiving from the department, especially with direct questions if we are to reopen our claims or not. If anyone has updates for themselves please let us all know.

Do I need to Reopen Claim to get benefits with CA EDD?
Getting this question a bit and per CA EDD, “If you stop certifying for continued benefits, and it’s been more than 30 days since you last certified for benefits, your Unemployment Insurance (UI) claim becomes inactive. You must reopen your claim to request benefit payments.” However based on calls people have had with EDD they are getting a somewhat conflicting message with one person commenting ” I just got off the phone with EDD and the rep said nobody has received an extension [as of January 11th] and only people who are receiving payments are from pending payments on December 26th. She also said it doesn’t matter if you clicked the reopen claim button the extensions will be rolled out this week and to wait for an email or text message notification that you have available weeks to certify”.

So it appears that if you cannot reopen your claim, you would need to wait for further instructions from CA EDD to file for the extended benefits. Given they are updating their systems over the next few weeks, it could be until the end of January before you can reopen of file a new claim.

      • I’ve been trying to research on what to do and stumbled across your message. I am also in PA and I’ve been collecting EB. They said that due to the extension of benefits those who’ve been collecting EB December and prior should automatically be placed back on PEUC. So yesterday I was able to file a claim and did so correctly, but I’m not sure if it was for EB because my balance has been down to zero as of last week or if its PEUC. Its confusing because I went to file today just to see what happens since thats what I’ve been doing with EB but it says I can’t file before next week but the file for EB tab is still there. So am I on PEUC but it just didn’t catch up in there system and should I wait and see if I get a payment this week? Or should I reopen my PEUC claim though people are saying they’re having trouble with that? Also, my benefit year ending date is the 20th of this month.

      • I’m also in PA and just ran out of EB, was able to file a claim yesterday but wasn’t sure if it was for EB or PEUC. I was assuming PEUC. I went to claim to today as saw that the file for eb tab was still there but above said I could file my claim until next week. So I cexk my profile and clicked previous claim and noticed that my balance went up on my PEUC and it shows that a payment was made. I’m wondering if it’s just taking a bit to show up in the system. I shouldn’t have to reopen my claim cause my balance went back up. What do you think?

  29. Hi, My husband has been receiving PUA in California since Oct 2020 his PUA UI online said his claim ended on Dec 31st. His last payment was on Dec 27th. Balance is around $5600. $167. Is weekly amount. The UI online was saying if you have a previous PUA you don’t need to reapply (do anything). EDD will automatically recalculate your payments…We will email or text you after updating etc. I went online today and it says “Reopen Your Claim
If you have not certified for benefits for a period of time or you have never certified during this benefit year, you must reopen your claim”.
there’s a blue button to click on to “Reopen Your Claim”
Then under that it says:”If you received a claim form from your employer or union, special handling is required to reopen your Unemployment Insurance (UI) claim. You must call one of the numbers below for assistance in reopening your claim.
For Work Sharing claims only: 916-464-3300
For all other claims visit Contact Us.
You cannot reopen a claim more than once within the same calendar week (Sunday through Saturday).
The previous message said EDD would send an email or text with instructions. We don’t know if this new message applies to HIS PUA claim or regular unemployment as it is not clear. There’s no message in his UI online inbox and He has not received anything saying what steps he needs to take. We don’t want to reopen his claim and make a mistake and it takes even longer or he gets some type of penalty. I also read everything on the EDD website and it dosen’t say. It’s very confusing. Please help as reaching a live person is virtually impossible in California. Thank you.

I live in CA, and received a text message from EDD 12/23/20 with a link to updates on federal unemployment benefits, click on link and gives me an update stating they are waiting for US Dept of Labor on how states must follow law. The text link I received said they will notify me through UI onine, mail or text when I can certify for my next benefit payment. I haven’t received any of these yet.

Logged into my UI online today, certify notifications say “Reopen Your Claim If you have not certified for benefits for a period of time or you have never certified during this benefit year, you must reopen your claim”. Do I have to go through this rigorous process and reopen my claim again? I am afraid to do this because it could mess up in the system and then a bigger problem is created. I have a claim balance, on extension, last payment issued 12/29.

    • Sounds like your state (and not sure which one you are in) is still updating their system for the extension. Hence your benefit balance has not been updated. Most states should be updated in the next couple of weeks (FL, VA and NV, maybe not as historically bad) and you should be able to ceritfy or reapply based on directions your state provides

All very confusing and doesnt make any sense, should have been placed back in PUA automatically and had the balance refresh for the next 3 months with the added extra $300 from the government.

Payments will be made from WED Jan. 2, 2021 – March 13, 2021; can you certify for any of these date? Or, are you unable to now? If so, check your BYE (Benefit Year Ending Date); not the Effective Date on MyUI as that is the program effective date. If your Benefit Year ended you will need to file a new claim asap. Good Luck!

The last time I certified on 4/6/21 and today 4/14/21 I received “Claimant Notice Of Possible Ineligibility” dated 4/7/2021 instead of transition correspondence. The Notice doesn’t explain why I was not paid for my last 2 certification weeks, only gives me advice to call IDES if I need additional info about this notice and my rights to appeal !!! Andy, could you please give me advice what to do? Thank you
