Stimulus Check Payment Status Updates and Latest News For IRS EIP Payments

There has been a lot of debate over the last few months on if another stimulus check payment will be made in 2022 or even in 2023 as the economy worsens and inflation takes a heavy toll on household budgets.

You can see this article for a more detailed discussion, funding for a 4th stimulus check was not included in the recently passed Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) package.

There is however a chance, if Democrats retain control of the House and Senate after the mid-terms, that other one-time economic assistance or stimulus payments may be made in 2023. This will be particularly the case if the economy worsens, inflations falls to manageable levels and unemployment rises.

I will keep tracking stimulus updates and you can follow us via the options below. Please also review the comments and answers below as well.

Third Stimulus Check Payment Status Updates

The IRS has started paying the $1400 per adult and $1400 per qualifying dependent (and this time adult dependents are included). Payment for these checks have started being disbursed and it is expected 90% of eligible recipients will get paid by the end of March 2021, according to senior administration officials. See more in the estimated IRS stimulus payment schedule.

IRS Update – March 17, 2021: The IRS have announced that they have sent out approximately 90 million EIP/Stimulus check payments worth $242 billion! Well ahead of schedule. The first batch or tranche of payments were sent by direct deposit based on 2019 or 2020 tax return data, or information the IRS has sourced for non-filers. There were however direct deposit issues with around 150,000 payments which required these payments to be sent by check. The status for these payments is available on the GMP tool.

Payment Issues for certain groups persist

As expected there are many who are seeing issues, especially non-filers, similar to previous rounds of stimulus check payments. Their main IRS stimulus payment status tool, Get My Payment (GMP) has now been updated (as of March 15th), but it has been hard to get real time updates. Especially for those expecting dependent checks, who are seeing ongoing delays with their correct payments (despite getting their own stimulus check). Note however that the IRS is still processing stimulus payments in multiple batches and payments could come separately for adults and dependents.

Given the volume of people checking payment status and details on GMP, there have also been several performance issues with the tool as well. The “please wait” message is what some may be seeing due to this and is a normal part of the site’s operation according to the IRS. Also to prevent bots and people constantly checking for updates (the system is not real time) a limit has been set on the number of times people can access GMP daily. When people reach the maximum number of accesses, Get My Payment will inform them they will need to check back the following day.

Get My Payment Status’ and What it Means

The following status messages will be shown on the GMP tool with regards to your third stimulus check payment. Note that the tool does not show the amount of your stimulus check. You will need to wait for the notice of payment or check your IRS transcript.

Payment Status (Payment Successful) showing a stimulus payment has been processed, a payment date is available and payment is to be sent either by direct deposit or mail (EIP Card or a check). Or if the IRS has confirmed your eligibility but still processing your payment in an upcoming batch you will see the following message, “You’re eligible, but a payment has not been processed and a payment date is not yet available.”

Payment Status Not Available:  You will see this if the IRS haven’t yet processed your payment or you’re not eligible for a payment. You will just need to be patient to see which is the outcome, but see the above links to ensure you are eligible for the third payment which had lower income thresholds to get any part of the stimulus check.

Need More Information: Your payment was returned to the IRS because if was undeliverable by mail or direct deposit. Only people who get this message can use the IRS tool to provide updated bank account information.

Update with Second Stimulus Check Payment Status

The IRS has started paying the recently approved $600/$1200 stimulus check (recovery rebate) for adults and their child dependents. As expected there are many who are seeing issues, especially non-filers. Their main IRS stimulus payment status tool, Get My Payment (GMP) for checking stimulus payments has now been updated (as of January 5th), but has been hard to to get real time updates and many are especially those expecting dependent checks are seeing ongoing delays with their payment. Note however that the official IRS is still processing stimulus payments and could come separately for adults and dependents.

Missing Payment Status means no automatic stimulus

According to the IRS, if the GMP reflects a direct deposit date and partial account information, then your payment has been sent via direct deposit. If you see a mailing date, that’s when a check or debit card was sent and could take 3 to 4 weeks to get to you. However if you get the status of “Payment Status #2 – Not Available” on the Get My Payment (GMP) stimulus tracker tool, it means you won’t be getting the second stimulus check automatically sent to you. Instead you would have to claim in your 2020 tax return filing and claim it is a recovery rebate credit. There is no second round of automatic payments for this status.

IRS Non-Filer Tool Closed for Updates

While the IRS is using 2019 tax returns for payment of the second stimulus check (or economic impact payment 2)., payments are also automatic for those who don’t file a tax return and who successfully registered for the first payment online agency’s Non-Filers tool by November 21, 2020 or who had submitted a simplified 2019 tax return that has been processed by the IRS. This includes Social Security retirement and disability beneficiaries, railroad retirees and those getting veterans’ benefits.

While the IRS had setup a non-filers tool for the first stimulus payment, this time around they are not doing that and will use information from the first stimulus check payments or work directly with the relevant federal agencies to obtain the information needed to send out the new payments. The IRS has confirmed that the non-filer tool is closed for updates and encouraging you to claim the missing stimulus (known as a recovery rebate credit in tax terms) by filing a 2020 1040 or 1040-SR tax return. Free tax software programs can be used by people who are not normally required to file tax returns but are eligible to claim the credit.

For those who don’t receive a direct deposit by early January, they should watch their mail for either a paper check or a debit card. Otherwise, people who didn’t receive a payment for any reason can file a 2020 tax return.

[Update August 2020] The IRS has announced it will reopen the registration period – starting Aug. 15 through Sept. 30 – for eligible non-filing federal beneficiaries (e.g. SSDI, Retirees and SSI recipients) who eligible for the $500 per child payments. Those who file (via the IRS Non-filer tool) and are deemed eligible should start seeing their payments by Mid-October.

For those Social Security, SSI, Department of Veterans Affairs and Railroad Retirement Board beneficiaries who have already used the Non-Filers tool to provide information on children, no further action is needed. The IRS will automatically make a payment in October.

The IRS has finally gotten its Stimulus Check Status Tool (Get My Payment) up and running. This is in addition to the other tool that was setup a few days earlier – Enter Payment Info – for those who are not required to file U.S. income taxes, but want to update their direct deposit information in order to get their stimulus checks. You can see who is eligible for the 2020 stimulus check payments here. Most tax payers will receive their stimulus check or Economic Stimulus Payment as the IRS calls it automatically based on on their 2019 (2018 if that is the last filed one) tax return. However to check status and/or update payment details you will need to use one of these tools. Provided below is a summary of the tools and what you need to use these.

Note – As of April 22nd the IRS is about half way through processing stimulus check payments (~65 million recipients). They have announced additional rounds of payments via direct deposit and paper checks each week. The first round went to people the IRS already had direct deposit information on file for, from their 2018 or 2019 tax returns. The next round will be sent to those who recently provided the IRS with their direct deposit information. Subsequent rounds will go to late filers, retiree, veteran and SSI groups and then to people who had complications or required further reviews of their eligibility.

Get My Payment (GMP) – Stimulus Check Status Checker

This tool which was recently stood up and has some bugs as expected is processing queries very slowly as millions are anxiously checking their stimulus payment status (some multiple times a day). In fact the IRS has acknowledged issues whereby the GMP tool is giving many an incorrect message that their payment status is not available. But this is just the default error message due to system unavailability and not because the persons data is not there or payment hasn’t been sent. This is being fixed and the IRS has said to be patient and check back later.

[GMP updates] The IRS has recently provided the following updates to this tool to help track the status of your stimulus check and address the many issues current and potential recipients were facing

Scheduled delivery date by direct deposit or mail now available and will also include last four digits of the bank account being used if the IRS has direct deposit information. You wi need to provide your SSN, DOB and mailing address used on your latest tax return

Taxpayers needing to add their bank account information to speed receipt of their payment will also need to provide the following additional information: Adjusted Gross Income and Refund or amount owed from their latest filed tax return, Bank account type, account and routing numbers

Reminder – Get My Payment cannot update bank account information after an Economic Impact Payment has been scheduled for delivery. To help protect against potential fraud, the tool also does not allow people to change bank account information already on file with the IRS.

You will need to validate your identity and address when you log into the portal so have your 2018 or 2019 tax return (latest filed) handy.

Get My Payment - Stimulus Check Status Checker

Get My Payment (IRS Stimulus Check Status Checker)

Payment Status Not Available Error

You may see the “status not available error” for the following reasons per the IRS:

IRS Get My Payment Errors
  • If you are not eligible for a payment per stimulus check rules.
  • If you are required to file a tax return and have not filed in tax year 2018 or 2019.
  • If you recently filed your return or provided information through Non-Filers: Enter Your Payment Info (see following section). Your payment status in this case will be updated when processing is completed.
  • If you are a SSA or RRB Form 1099 recipient, SSI or VA benefit recipient. Your status is not available because the IRS is working with the SSA and VA to issue your payment.
  • Your refund is being processed and no additional updates are available. The Get My Payment data is updated once per day, so there’s no need to check back more frequently.

Payment Information Portal (update Direct Deposit Information)

This is applicable to those lower income US citizens or permanent residents (and some longer term visa holders with a SSN) that do not file a tax return and had income that did not exceed $12,200 ($24,400 for married couples) for 2019. Your income for this year is not what should be used. Those who filed a 2019 or 2018 tax return which would have included payment details (for refund or taxes due) should NOT use this portal. Further Social Security and disability recipients shouldn’t use this portal as IRS will automatically sent them payments based on SSA data.

Have the following information ready to use the Payment Information Portal

The IRS will use this information to determine eligibility and payment amount and send you your stimulus check (economic impact payment. After providing this information you won’t need to take any additional action.

  • Full name, current mailing address and email address
  • Date of birth and valid Social Security number (SSN)
  • Bank account number, type and routing number, if you have one
  • Driver’s license or state-issued ID, if you have one
  • For each qualifying child: name, Social Security number or Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number and their relationship to you or your spouse

Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here (IRS Website)

Note – The links to the tools above will take you to the IRS portal (you can validate via IRS.gov), but please avoid many scams trying to get this personal information from you. You should only be providing this via the official IRS portal.

How long are the Stimulus Check Payments available?

Stimulus check economic impact payments will be available throughout the rest of 2020, so you have time to update your Direct Deposit details until then.

Can I Call the IRS to get more information?

The IRS have clearly stated on their website that people should NOT call about this payment since they are over 100 million people eligible to get this payment so processing times are long and with millions of tax refunds to process the IRS is not taking calls on this payment. I can say from personal experience and from the many comments I have received that calling the IRS stage at this point on this topic is pointless. But I can try and answer your questions based on the information I have. Just leave a comment and subscribe to get the latest update.

    • I have am struggling with same problem. I am an SSA/SSI Disability recipient. My children are attached to my case, so I also receive a small monthly payment for each of them ($11.00 per child) but is part of MY CASE which arrives via direct deposit monthly. I also filled out the online form for “non filers” before April 22nd for those individuals on Disability, who don’t file taxes and qualified for the $500 payment for each dependent child. Afterwards I received a confirmation so I know the form was submitted. Still, yesterday i received MY check BY MAIL for $1,200 and it didn’t include the $500 per child. I don’t know how to correct this situations. I also thought it was worth mentioning the fact that my check cane by mail, and not direct deposit. This seems odd to me since govt already had all my and my childrens info, along with my banking info through disability payments. I also was required to give that info again when filling out non filers form. So why did my check come via mail and not direct deposit? Also, what steps can I take to fix this situation? if the answer is to wait, Should I expect the checks for my children to come by mail or direct deposit? Another concern I have is that it’s not possible for me to check the news everyday, and the deadlines and requirements keep changing. I worry, I’ll be required to fill out another form based on my case but the deadline will have passed by time I see it. I needed this money right away as it won’t necessarily benefit me as much as it would now.

, my check arrived via mail and was not direct deposited as was indicated it would be on govt’ websites. I also filed the “non tax form” before April 22, 2020 which I was told I must do to receive the $500 per child) with stimulus check. and didn’t/don’t file taxes before April 22nd. This included my banking info, childrens SS#’s, etc. which they already had. which included there The $500 for each of my kids wasn’t included and I but today I received a check for my childrenchildren for years many years. Nevertheless, I filed a non for each child also direct deposit as part of my case. payment ($11 each) as part of my case. as I receive 3 small payment for each of my 3 children The government already has all required info for my children and I (banking, etc.) as they are in my case and I children and I (including banking info for for monthly direct deposit payment monthly payments). each my and children info (banking including info, kids SS#’s etc) bank account t I filled out the non filers form on IRS website before April 22 which included all info required Information. for myself and my 3 children. Today 5/4/20 I received a check by mail (not direct deposit) for $1,200 only, and the $500 on each child wasn’t included.

Entered all the information in the Non-filer portal right for my dependents “children” and received confirmation email that my information were accepted by IRS and eventually received stimulus check of $2400 for me and my wife, but did not receive the $500 payment for my children. What should I do to claim or receive the payment for my children as well?

  5. Did everything correct. I’m a mother with 4 dependents, married, file HOH. used IRS tool HOH to submit bank info as instructed since i have children and wanted direct deposit. Got my $1200 yesterday 4/29/20 but nothing for my kids ($2000). I’m furious! This is supposed to help us, bullshit, I now have to wait until next year to filed for a credit because the of their processing error didnt issue my dependents their portion? My 2018 and 2019 tax info list all my dependents nothing changed! And im to the midst of all this my greedy landlord served me with an illegal no fault eviction after 10 years, having to move with no money makes this mother of 4 now broke, jobless and homeless! THANKS FOR A STIMULIOUS OF FALSE HOPE…This is not the American dream I was promised!!!

  6. I currently receive Social Security income, my husband does not receive any income at the moment so we’re both not required to fill out a tax forms. I went to the non-filers form selected married filing jointly. I put my husbands name his Social Security number my name my Social Security number and all three of our children who qualify. Yesterday we received our stimulus for just ourselves and not our children. That was $1500 that I was counting on :( also note I submitted all of the information on April 10 And was accepted by the IRS. That was a couple weeks before the ssi deadline of April 22 so I’m lost.

  10. HELP!!! I’m confused about what to expect for my 17 (18 in July) year old daughter. I am disabled and on SSI, I know I qualify for the stimulus check but I don’t (am not required to) file a tax return. She however does file for returns as she works and goes to school. Should we just file her taxes as normal and will she get her own $1200 check? I don’t know if I should be filing something out for her as my dependent to get the $500 dependent money or what?

    Reply
    • At 17 nearly 18, can she qualify for her own stimulus payment? I’m super confused about the “under 17” rule and how that will affect any payment since she’s still legally a dependent. Why did they do it that way?

    • I’m on ssd and my daughter collects as well I did the non-filers and received mine but nothing for her.. I’ve been researching like crazy.. being your ex claimed your child, you won’t get it.. I’m so sorry to tell you that, but that’s part of the stipulation…. It sucks and honestly since you allow him to claim her he should give you the 500.00 … But that will be a civil matter if you can’t come to an agreement on your own… Again I’m sorry to give you bad news but with all the research I’ve done it continually says that “broken” families, the one who claims the child on taxes is the one who will get the 500.00

      • Anyone who has dependent children and has SSI, SSDI, Veteran, etc. should go to IRS.gov before May 5th and research how you can add your dependent information. I am not clear about if you’ve already received payment how it works but I did see something about a deadline so it may help you. Like I said I don’t really know exactly what it is saying I just noticed it and thought I would pass the little info I garnered on to you to try to help. I hope you can get some help and/or info on how to get the additional money.

I see we all are going through the same problems I thought it was just myself so they really need to put out some information on this particular problem.

        • I’m so sorry this is happening to all of you. Like I said I wasn’t really sure what it was exactly for but I saw those key words, dependent money, and a deadline so I tried to get it on here fast just in case it could help even one of you. Hopefully they will give you some kind of information or a way for you to make them aware of the problem. I sincerely do wish all of you the best of luck and hope it gets resolved quickly for you.

    • I received the same error. My AGI is under the 12,000.00 dollar withholding limit. This makes my income $0 and my refund $0. It appears that the IRS form does not accommodate this scenario. I am eligible for the 1,200 stimulus check, but I will have to wait for it to be mailed to me.

Since I just filed my taxes with her being a dependent, will I receive my $500 dependent credit later on after they process my 2019 taxes or will I just not get it now? The check status button doesn’t work.

    • What is the get status saying if I may ask?

As far as your daughter when you get your letter in the mail regarding your payment I believe they give you contact information so you can let them know any problems that you have with the payment such as dependents being left out of payment. They are supposed to mail them within 15 days after the payment to you is made.

    • Same exact thing happened to me. Had a baby in 2019, filed taxes and they were accepted April 1st, yet they used my 2018 taxes for the stimulus and sent it to my old bank account. I received my tax return deposit with my baby as a dependent 3 days after the stimulus money in the right account. So frustrating.
So far, I’ve read nothing about our specific situation and there is no way to correct it as far as I can tell. :(

  14. I qualify for the 2020 Economic Impact Payment. I filed my 2018 tax return and had my refund applied to my 2019 estimated taxes. I have not yet filed my 2019 tax return. So the IRS does not have direct deposit information for me from my tax returns. I am retired and get Social Security benefits, which are direct deposited monthly to my bank account. Will the IRS get my direct deposit information from Social Security and direct deposit my Economic Impact Payment into my bank account? Or will they send me a check? I cannot get on to Get My Payment to give them my direct deposit information. The site say “Status Not Available”.

I should note that the site has been taken down for updates each of the last three evenings. I also noticed that one has to be careful how you input your address on the first screen in order to get into the next screen. On the next screen where you put in your adjusted gross, refund and bank information, check the circle where it asked if you got a refund. And, if you had your refund applied to your estimated taxes, put 0 (number zero) in the amount box. Hope it works for you, as it did for me.

  15. If you used the portal to update your dad info how long before the irs deposits the check. It says it will deposit it into my account but I don’t have a deposit date yet and I updated the info as soon as it was up early early Wednesday morning. Mnuchin said “several days” but it has now been 5 days.

      • Jimmy and Diana…I’m hoping that maybe it will be tomorrow. I read some other comments in various websites and several people said they received an email from their bank saying they have dd scheduled for the 22nd but the Irs still hasn’t updated their side. My bank does not notify on pending deposits so I won’t know until it’s done. So hopefully

        • Jimmy,
I didn’t. But it may be because that portal opened two days earlier than it was supposed to so it may have pushed everything back a week. Because Ways & Means said if you update your dd info by Wednesday you would receive a check the next week ( I would assume on Wednesdays). So, if my thinking is correct, I’m hoping it will be no later than the 29th.

  16. There is nowhere to enter my bank information under Get My Payment to received stimulus check direct deposited as with my last taxes filed of 2018 I owed so my bank information was not given.

      • I think you have to go on the IRS website and file a non-return “return” There’sa link where non-filers can file in order to update or enter their information?

    • Yes. You do. As long as you have a valid SS# and are under a certain incline limit, which you are if you’re unemployed and receiving food support you qualify.

      • I also did not receive the $500 for my 1.5 year old. I claimed her on my taxes this year and received my child tax credit and everything for her. So why am I not receiving the $500 when I claimed her as my dependent?

  22. If the IRS is going by 2019 tax return that I filed then I don’t understand why it says my money was deposited into my bank account 4/15/20 . I checked my card and there is no money on my card, My tax money was deposited on a prepaid money network card this year, still got the card it says there is zero balance, so question is where is my money? If the IRS went by my 2019 tax return and it says it deposited on 4/15/20 then it should be on the card, not anywhere else. And it’s not on there.

  24. I am a single mom and my son lives with me full-time. My ex claimed our son in 2018. I haven’t completed/filed 2019 taxes yet. I assume I will be receiving the $1200 since my income is low, but what about the $500 for my son? Should I rush to complete my 2019 return to get this check? How do I get credit and receive what I am eligible for? You mention we may be able to request the $500 on 2020 taxes as a credit? Please advise. Thank you.

So when I go online to give my bank information there is no place to put that information. I tried putting the overpayment amount as a refund but it says that information is not correct……

    • I had the same problem. I was able to successfully submit the bank info by checking the circle that said I got a refund and then entering zero as the refund amount.

  30. Once again…’cannot determine eligibility’ response on Get My Payment. This also means I can’t enter direct deposit information on the ‘Get My Payment’ site. I have not yet filed this year, did not get a refund last year but they should have enough info to let me enter direct deposit. But two possibilities (1) The only address the IRS has for me is a PO Box (25 years standing) and do they know that’s ripe situation for ripoffs and so are double checking address info against prior returns?. Or (2) They need to make sure that their direct deposit info is confirmed against a bank account with the same name. Just too many things can go wrong with hundreds of millions of checks being issued simultaneously…

  32. Hello, My husband won a lottery ticket in 2018 so it made our AGI $335,000. We only make $85,000 a year. Our AGI for 2019 is $85,000. Are we still entitled to that money? When I try to track our check it says that payment status not available. Please check the FAQ’s on our website. I feel we are still entitled to that money because it was only high because we had to report the winnings on our tax return. Can you please help with this on a way we can get our money? Thank you so much for your help.

Will the IRS validate the account before sending the funds? Will I have to wait until I get the letter before I can give them my new bank account information?
