[Update for PEUC claimants] Regardless of when claims started and how many weeks of PEUC claimed (up to the 75 week maximum), ALL enhanced benefit programs ended on September 6th, 2021. PEUC claimants will transition to regular state unemployment (if eligible).
Unfortunately, because states did not extend regular state unemployment benefit programs coverage, PUA claimants will likely not qualify for state unemployment benefits.
See this article for currently available state unemployment benefits and I will provide updates should additional unemployment programs or funding become available.

While federally funded programs like PUA and PEUC have provided additional benefits and weeks of coverage for millions of unemployed or underemployed Americans during the COVID pandemic, many states have also triggered emergency provisions within their own unemployment insurance (UI) programs that extended UI benefits coverage if state unemployment levels are above certain pre-specified thresholds.
This provides significantly more coverage when combined with the extended federally funded enhanced UI programs and allows broader eligibility criteria if a claimant’s unemployment was due to COVID related reasons. The graphic below (from How Much) shows the regular and extended benefits currently available in various states through the end of the year.
As a recap, most states provided basic or regular unemployment benefits for between 13 to 26 weeks. Under the CARES act enhanced unemployment benefit programs were put in place that funded an extension and expanded coverage of existing state unemployment benefits. This included:
- Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) – Up to 75 weeks of benefits for freelance, gig and contract workers who would normally NOT have been eligible for state unemployment programs. Workers who get PUA are not eligible for PEUC or Extended State Unemployment benefits
- Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC)—A total of 54 weeks of coverage if you have exhausted other benefits. This is available to people who generally would qualify for regular state unemployment and cannot be claimed if an unemployed person is eligible for PUA.
- Extended State Unemployment Benefits (EB)— Provides an additional 13 additional weeks of benefits when a state is experiencing high unemployment. Some states have also enacted a voluntary program to pay up to 7 additional weeks (for a total of 20 weeks maximum) during periods of extremely high unemployment. Note that extended state benefits are only available after people have collected all regular Unemployment Insurance benefits as well as any Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) extension benefits they were eligible for. But if the unemployment rates drops below high unemployment thresholds in a state, the EB benefit coverage weeks may drop or cease.
So based on the above a New Yorker who was working a regular job (I.e. got a W2) before getting unemployed could get up to 59 weeks of benefits based on traditional unemployment insurance lasts for 26 weeks + PEUC offers 13 weeks of additional benefits and then EB which offers up to 20 weeks of additional benefits on top of the weeks of PEUC benefits, based on New York State’s high unemployment rate.
A similar worker in Texas would get 26 weeks of regular UI + 13 weeks of PUEC + 7 weeks of Extended State Unemployment benefits + 7 more weeks for entering extremely High Unemployment Period (HUP) for a total of 59 weeks. While triggered, HUP increases the maximum potential number of weeks for claimants on regular unemployment to 59 weeks and individuals on Pandemic Unemployment Assistance from 39 weeks to 46 weeks.
Extended Benefits (EB) have triggered on in 48 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.
Note: The Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) provided an additional $600 per week, that expired in July but still being retroactively paid in several states. Has been replaced by the Lost Wages Assistance (LWA) Program. However both these programs provided supplementary UI payments, rather than extended benefit coverage.
How to Apply for State Extended Benefits
You generally do not need to reapply to get extended state benefits. If you qualify for Extended Benefits (EB), following exhausting your current claim balance under regular and enhanced unemployment programs, your state UI agency will send you a letter with more details or automatically enroll you for ongoing benefits. If you are still unemployed, continue certifying and filing your payment request as required by your state.
How much will I get under State Extended Benefits?
While the amount of EB’s are capped at the state’s weekly maximum benefit amount (MBA), many states pay less or a proportion of this. For example in Texas, the state EB is 50 percent of the regular UI claim’s MBA or will pay up to 13 weeks. The MBA for extremely high unemployment is 30 percent of the regular UI claim’s MBA or will pay up to 7 weeks. To confirm what you will get you will need to check with your state unemployment agency which will provide a determination using your wage base period.

I reached benefit year glitch, and reapplied for ui and determination came back INVALID, do I qualify for any benefits?
My PEUC ran out in the middle of December then switched to EB. It paid me from EB in Ohio for the next two weeks. My question is once the systems are programmed will I be switched back over to the PEUC with the additional 11 weeks or will I continue being paid through the EB program? Also what happens if the EB program in Ohio triggers off? Would it then switch back to PEUC?
I live in Florida. I am receiving PUA and it states it ends 12/26/20. But I will still have a fairly large balance. Can I get the remaining balance after the end date? Is there an extension application for this remaining balance, and how do we request additional benefits if still unemployed due to COVID??
TIA for information.
The 11 week extension should be automatically available once states implement the program updates. See more here – https://savingtoinvest.com/the-first-step-to-receive-pandemic-unemployment-assistance-pua-is-to-apply-and-to-be-denied-for-regular-state-unemployment-benefits/
I live in Arkansas..I lost my job due to COVID..I received my regular unemployment, then PEUC, and I was drawing off the EB which lasted 3 weeks. My question is..it shows I still have $405 I can draw..my last EB deposit was in October.. I have not received any unemployment since then..but I still have the $405 ..the new unemployment rules say you get the $300 extra if you are getting unemployment Dec 26–March 2021..I’m not..so do I not qualify for it? Someone plz help me
Can someone answer me here..I’m not sure how to get my email pulled up to see the comments..
Can someone from Arkansas help me? Plz reply here
You should have extended benefits of PEUC. President Trump signed the new stimulus bill last night. I think you have to wait until next Sunday, January 3, 2021 to begin filing. Check with ADWS and call the number to make sure. If he had signed the bill Saturday, December 26, 2020 or before; you’d been able to apply yesterday. But he waited. So the past week is lost. But yeah, your benefits are now extended. I don’t know if it’ll take some time for Arkansas to setup the system again like last time or not. Just have to call to see…
I was getting EB..Extended Benefits..is that the extended benefits for PEUC? Cause I only got 3 weeks of the EB before it was cut off..with the. new package in place will I be able to get it bc right now I don’t draw any unemployment?
I was getting the Extended Benefits..my last payment was in Oct..I haven’t received any unemployment since..Do I qualify for the $300 since I not getting any unemployment at this time?
The answer is no. You have to qualify for at least on of the UI agencies to get the extra 300.00
I was looking for work pre- covid and applied for PUA in P.A. I was eligible and had no problems, My last payment will be next week, but question is will I be eligible for any other benefits or will I automatically be enrolled in a program, or am I not eligible for any other unemployment benefits?
I received a email on September 18 saying My claim eligible for payment of Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) and I’m also eligible for an additional $600 per week through Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) through week ending July 25. Will I receive back payment
I am receiving PUA and it states it ends 12/26/20. But I will still have a fairly large balance. Can I get the remaining balance after the end date? I live in Florida.
Thanks for your help!

How do i file for extenstion of pua? I ran out this past week and im still not working. In pa. Thank you.
Hey did u find out how to file for it?? Mines run out too
Hello if you find or get an answer for this question please share. I have the same issue, and cannot find out how to get or apply for the 7 week extension.
erica did you find any forms for additional 7 weeks I am also looking for how to file in kansas If you could help we would appreciate leaving a comment
7 week extension was also offered in Texas however, if the unemployment rate dropped below 8% it would not apply. Right in mist of the UI ending on Dec 26 …the unemployment rate dropped to 7.5% therefore the Texas 7 week extension of UI has been cancelled!! Check your state guidelines for the 7 week extension as you too may be screwed like us Texans.
7 WEEK EXTENTION CANCELLED IN STATE OF TEXAS. Evidentially there was a stipulation that it would continue only if the unemployment was above 8%. Texas unemployment dropped to 7.5 % therefore cancelling out the 7 week extension. Check the qualifying conditions of your state. If it had continued in Texas it would have been automatic continuance without application. Good Luck !!
Did you get answers to you question?
To qualify for EB what unemployment
% rate does it have to be above in MN ?
Texas is 5 %….same with the SNAP. We are about 12 % currently….long way to go
I am in New York, and I certified for LWA $300 today is 9/18 and all the LWA status tables show that the monies were paid in NY on 9/14-9/18. I called unemployment on 9/16 they said I should have it by 9/18, guess what – “No Money” – Whats going on??
Is it necessary to file a new Application for PEUC if your benefits expire in 2 days? If yes where to take it and when to file?
I am in Texas and I went to the home page of the UI logon and there was a statement that it was not necessary. However just by reading comments on this site some states require a new application. You can also go to the frequently asked questions of your states UI and see if that has been answered.
Arizona here. I get $117 weekly +the 300$ from stimulas . As of week ending 9/12/20 I didn’t get the 300 and then I see articles saying it’s extended untill end of year. Which is it. This is so confusing
I got 4 weeks only, as that what FL applied for. Max weeks were 6 depending on what your state applied for. I googled “when were FEMA unemployment assistance funds exhausted for Florida”. Then dig around for your answers… hope this helps. You might also look at EB funds that may be available to you after everything runs out.
Max 6 weeks of $300
MN has done as decent job of explaining the extra LWA $300 benefits in email. However, they provide zero documentation matching payments to specific weeks. They claim the Feds have currently funded five weeks (ending Aug 1 – 29). They added a new question to the weekly certification “is your unemployment due to COVID-19?” after the week ending Aug 15 (third one). I answered it wrong because it was confusing. They sent a follow-up email saying not to worry if you answered it wrong the first time but to answer yes if unemployment is due to COVID-19 downturn in business not specific to you.
I only got four of five weeks of $300 so I am concerned my “wrong” answer cost me $300.
I ended up getting six weeks of $300 LWA. Apparently my first answer did not matter.
Thank you for posting article about Extended 13 week benefits including the State-by-State chart. In Texas as I have been researching since my regular benefits ended at 26 wks, it says that most states auto enroll into next program. However waiting till your final week and not knowing if your state Will auto enroll can be quit frustrating! Yesterday I did my payment request so by tomorrow I will see just how Texas is handling this. ! Thanks again Andy. Texan
Ok so I received my regular payment for employment today in Louisiana but I was getting the $300 but today theirs no $300 why is that
I am trying to find out the exact same thing. I live in Louisiana and have been getting the federally funded extra $300 but did not so far this week. My state plus the $300 were both deposited together. So far I can’t find any answers as to why.
I think only first 3 weeks of $300 approved so far in most states. States have to apply again for next round. Plus money is running out!
