Will I Automatically Get The New Unemployment Benefits Extension for PEUC and PUA and Extra $300 Weekly Stimulus Payment With a Remaining or Exhausted Claim Balance

The short answer to the title of this article is Maybe. But like the earlier extensions there are some constraints to be aware of under the September 2021 unemployment extensions funded under $1.9 trillion Biden Stimulus package. The final bill funded another 25 weeks of unemployment benefit extensions for millions of jobless Americans via the main enhanced unemployment programs with key dates shown in the table below.

Will I need to reapply for these benefits or are they automatically applied?

Like earlier extensions this will vary on state-by-state basis and on your claim status. Those who have an active claim or weeks remaining in their UI balance as of March 14th, 2021 should be able to keep certifying and have the extended weeks automatically added to their account. Those who had exhausted their benefits or had a lapse in their benefits (e.g. returned to work temporarily) will likely have to wait for notification from their state to confirm if extensions will be applied automatically or if they will require some sort of action to reactivate or reopen their claim. In either situation claimants will need to wait for their state to update their UI systems to program for the latest extension, which could be a slow process. Any missed payments due to state rollout delays will be retroactively caught up.

Once claimants start getting paid under an existing state or federally funded enhanced UI program, they also then get the $300 weekly supplementary payment (FPUC program). You can see this article for specific situations as to whether a claimant needs to take action or not to get the extended benefits.

$900 billion COVID stimulus bill funding extensions

There are some constraints to be aware of in the recently approved $900 billion stimulus bill unemployment benefits extension as discussed below. Just to recap the legislation passed under the new stimulus bill includes the following unemployment benefits: Eleven more weeks of benefits under the Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) program and the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program. It also includes a $300 Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) per week supplemental payment to anyone receiving unemployment benefits from any other unemployment program during the coverage period.

Under the PEUC program states can now pay up to 24 weeks of additional unemployment benefits to individuals who have qualified for, but exhausted regular state unemployment compensation (UC). They must also be able to work, available for work, and actively seeking work assuming no Coronavirus/COVID-19 restrictions. An individual is deemed to have exhausted benefits (per DOL guidance) when no further UC payments can be made under any federal or state law because the individual has received all available regular UC based on employment or wages during such individual’s base period; or the individual’s right to such regular UC has been terminated by reason of the expiration.

PUA provides UI benefits to gig workers and others not traditionally eligible for them. Under the law, the end of the period of applicability for the PUA program extends to those weeks of unemployment ending on or before March 14, 2021. For individuals on PUA who have not exhausted their benefit eligibility of up to 50 weeks, the program also provides for continuing benefits for eligible individuals for weeks of unemployment through April 5, 2021.

PUA and PEUC was initially only payable up to the week of unemployment ending before December 31, 2020 (so the last week would be week ending Dec 26th or Dec 27th), but has now been extended under the recent COVID relief bill to March 14th, 2021. Existing claimants will have until the week beginning April 5th, 2021 to exhaust any remaining balances.

You can also see this recent Video update on if Extensions are automatic or a new/reactivated claim is needed

Will I Need to Reapply for these benefits or are they automatically applied?

This will depend on state by state basis, but those who have an active claim or have exhausted their benefits will be eligible for the enhanced unemployment benefits discussed above. State UI agencies are responsible for reaching out but given the massive spike in claims this is likely to be a slow process. Some states are automatically extending benefits (even without ongoing certification) for those whose claims have a remaining balance or claims that have recently expired due to delays in passing the stimulus legislation. For those who have not claimed UI or had a claim expire several months ago, then you will likely have to file a new claim or reactivate your existing claim (will vary on a state by state basis). You can see this article for specific situations as to whether a claimant needs to take action or not to get the extended benefits. The table below shows key dates for the extended programs.

States have now also received detailed federal guidance (via the Department of Labor) on the implementation of the stimulus-law extensions for existing UI beneficiaries. Most states like New York, Florida and California have told people who are already collecting unemployment benefits and qualify for the PEUC or PUA extension that they don’t need to reapply to receive the additional $300 FPUC payment.

Notes to table:
1. Table does not include extended state benefits which could mean additional weeks of PUA in certain states (e.g California which includes up to 57 weeks)
2. You can only get PUA if you don't qualify for regular UI or PEUC, so those weeks need to be excluded from maximum weeks.
3. New Claimants or those who had exhausted benefits have to apply and get their claim approved for back dating to December 1st. Otherwise they only get the new 11 week maximum under the extension funding from December 27th, 2020

Note – Under current rules if you stop certifying for continued unemployment benefits, even for one week, your Unemployment Insurance (UI) claim becomes inactive. You must reopen your claim to request benefit payments. You can generally reopen your claim if it was filed within the last 52 weeks. If your benefit year has ended, you must file a new claim.

Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) and Extended State Benefits

Independent contractors, freelancers and gig workers who wouldn’t have qualified for claims before will be able to get the same UI benefits as those who qualify for the PEUC program. This act has loosened rules and eligibility considerably and includes:

  • Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) – Provides at least 50 weeks of benefits for freelance, gig and contract workers who would normally NOT have been eligible for state unemployment programs. Workers who get PUA are not concurrently eligible for PEUC or Extended State Unemployment benefits. Unemployment claims for PUA will be backdated and paid retroactively to the first week during the PUA period in which an employee was unemployed, partially unemployed, or unable and unavailable to work due to COVID-19
  • Extended State Unemployment Benefits (EB)— Provides an additional 13 additional weeks of benefits when a state is experiencing high unemployment. Some states have also enacted a voluntary program to pay up to 7 additional weeks (for a total of 20 weeks maximum) during periods of extremely high unemployment. Note that extended state benefits are only available after people have collected all regular Unemployment Insurance benefits as well as any PEUC benefits they were eligible for. But if the unemployment rates drops below high unemployment thresholds in a state, the EB benefit coverage weeks may drop or cease. See the current levels of EB benefits available by state.

Many applicants with exhausted claims are getting rejected when applying for additional UIC. In this situation state agencies are asking claimants to be patient and re-apply when their systems are updated. States are also obligated to reach out to applicants eligible under the new programs, but per the information above they are so far backlogged that this may take several weeks. For those already on unemployment benefits but close to exhausting their claim period, you will just have to wait and hope your state updates is systems to automatically extend your unemployment benefit coverage.

  1. Hello, I have been on PUA unemployment in Ohio since may of this year and as of November 2,2020 they put my account under review for fraud. I was asked to send in multiple documentation by November 11,2020 and I did all of that. I have continued filing every week since as I’m still out of work and have children who are doing school at home because of the numerous cases lately. My question is why is my account active and the hold payment saying no but I still haven’t gotten anything? I have 5 weeks filed with pending issues on them? I also have a remaining balance of $2,300 and if PUA is to end the 26th of this month what will happen to those funds? Will I receive them? Will I get those 5 payments? I’m so confused. I’ve never been on unemployment before so I’m completely clueless. Thanks for any advice or answers.

Thank you and BEST OF LUCK TO YOU ALL!!!!

    • Hello I hope this comment help….. I’ve been on UI since July, was certifying on schedule no problems, then 7 weeks go by with no payments and no mail or email. I finally get someone on the phone and they say ” oh yeah looks like you answered so and so question wrong on the new questions for certification ( I clicked unemployed due to a disaster, but that’s for fires, I was only supposed to click COVID 19 only) let me fix that for you” and boom the next day I had the 7 weeks of missed payments. Since then I’ve gotten every payment on time. Tips for anyone else, call call call and call intill you not only get someone on the phone, but get someone who knows the ins and outs. Also BE FRIENDLY, dead serious, the nicer you are and the more you continue to say ” I really appreciate your time and help” the farther you will get. Good luck everyone

  2. I were currently living in Hawaii, and received UI benefits. I moved from Hawaii on 8/1/20, to the mainland and I exhauated mine UI regular on 10/17/20, and applied for PEUC. I still have not received payments as of 12/1/20. I feel an investigation should be done, I feel they are taking care of those that are still living in Hawaii, this is now going on the 8th week that I’m still waiting. And I still process my bi- weekly claims.

  3. Hi there.
I have been getting money thru my PUA claim which says it ends on 12/26/2020, but I will still have a balance of over $17,000 in there! I didn’t start getting my benefits until June 13, 2020, so I am wondering if:
    1. Will I get all if my remaining PUA $$ despite it saying it ends 12/26/20?
    2. Do I have to call or start a new claim backdated to 4/1/2020 as I was out of work due to COVID then too, but forgot to claim those couple months?
    3. Will I get some sort of extension link once 12/26/20 comes around?
    4. Is it best to try and call, and do you have to ask for a “Tier 3” rep, rather than the UI reps that answer your call 1st? It seems like the UI reps that answer first never have any specific answers, esp related to anyone’s specific claim.
Thanks for your help. I am very stressed and live in WA state. No jobs in the field I work in so I dont know what to do??

      • Me as well I have a balance of over 4,000 don’t know what’s going to happen? Will I get the rest of the money ?

        • In short, no.
Remaining balance will NOT be paid out for the weeks after 12/26/2020 unless Congress passes an extension. Pandemic Assistance Period (PAP) is from 2/2/2020-12/26/2020 as of now so if you have a balance, forgot to or didn’t claim any weeks in PAP and are entitled/eligible for those weeks, then you’ll be able to get backdated payments (back pay).

  4. I live in FL. I am receiving UC for the 12 weeks that our state allows (I am grateful, but I still think giving only 12 weeks is a joke).
I lost my job on 8/14/20 and I have only one week left to claim. So I will be at a $0 balance on 11/26/20.
Am I eligible for any other benefits once this runs out? Because I’m starting to stress tremendously, I do not have a job yet, and I have been looking and applying with no luck. I did NOT lose my job due to Covid-19. So that is where my concern comes in as far as eligibility for any extended benefits.
It appears that I might be eligible for PEUC after reading the requirements. If so, will they retroactive those payments and allow for the 13 weeks of extended benefits? Or, if I qualify, week they only allow for me to receive payments up until 12/26/20 (the expiration date on PEUC)?

  5. It says I qualify for the PEUC. I started this after I exhausted my normal benefits. Ive waited 3 months and still I have received nothing. I cant get ahold of anyone on Nevada’s site. Naturally they lie about
“visiting the site for faster service” as the site shows little to nothing.
Then I read in the Las Vegas Journal that thousands are receiving these benefits meanwhile Im over here waiting.
Can anyone in Las Vegas Nevada help?

  7. So I just received my final payment for my UI (benefit year has not ended yet), on the same page it states I have PEUC funds available. Will I begin receiving these starting next week? There is also a open PUA claim available, I am not sure which claim will be utilized first.

    Thanks a lot.

    • You must exhaust or be not entitled for UI, PEUC, EB first (in that order) before you can receive funds from PUA. If a program ends before your balance goes to zero, this is considered exhausting that specific program.

    • I’m in a similar situation but just finished my last claim for the PEUC in Cali. and waiting now for that payment, and also hope to get some kind of notice or message from EDD about a FedEd extension since it seems like I should get the 20 week extension, next. Did they notify you somehow or did you have to call them to get it? I read on EDD website that after you exhaust you regular EDD 26 weeks, and then PEUC +13 weeks, AND then the Fed Ed +20 weeks, then they can file a PUA claim for you if there is still money from the Fed to fund that program. I wanna say that I heard PUA is ending this month– Dec. 26, 2020. Right? So unless the Fed extends the PUA, then maybe you have no funds left. I believe it is the PUA that is getting hit with all the fraud claims from crooks using fake ID. So. That’s not good.

      Reply
    • Danilo, I think your last hope is for EDD to open a PUA for you if that program continues.
Can I ask you a question: did Cali EDD notify you about the FedEd 20 weeks, or how did you get on that? I just filed my last week claim on the PEUC (after getting all 26 weeks of Regular UI); so it seems like I should qualify for the FedEd next but have got no notice from them, although I just filed my final PEUC week claim today. I am guessing when they pay that final week in the next few days, then maybe that triggers them to put me over onto FedEd? So far, no notices or messages about it. What was your experience? • Beware that PUA (as of now, before extension) is up to 39 weeks including any weeks that you receive UI and EB (PEUC is excluded) during the Pandemic Assistance Period from 2/2 to 12/26. Depending on the state and the time you’ve been on unemployment, you may not even have any PUA weeks available before you start filing for PUA.

    • FPUC $600 ran from March to July 25 and LWAP $300 ran from 8/1 to 9/5. You’ll get these supplements only if you’re claiming those weeks regardless of what program you’re on (UI/PEUC/EB).

I was able to reapply as an exhaustee claim and got a monetary determination for the 13 week extension (peuc). However it has been almost a month of waiting with “in progress” and no change to the status (under review). Has anyone been through this? Did anyone eventually get approved/receive payments?

Not sure how long after the review it will take to be approved. Still in a waiting period. Best of luck to the both of us. I called the local American Job Center if that helps. I was able to get someone quicker to send it for review.

I’ll be in the same boat as you come November. Called UI and they said it would be automatic, have you checked your “My Inbox” to see if they sent you any documentation? Make sure not to go in and check banking info as that resets the system and adds another 10 days. Still not sure if the PEUC gives a complete 13 weeks or it stops in December as this article indicates. In your case I would call DUA to speed up the process, it’s the quickest way.All the best.

        • On the Ma website it states “If the UI claim has expired, a claimant must file a new regular UI claim prior to filing for PEUC. If the claimant is monetarily eligible on the new UI claim, regardless of the benefit rate amount, the claimant will receive benefits from the new claim. If the claimant is not monetarily eligible on the new claim, the claimant will be eligible for PEUC on the prior claim and UI Online will automatically implement that.” I would file a new claim and continue to request extensions.

        • Thank you so much for this info. In 2018 I was laid off and was able to only find part time work April 2019. This is why I’ve been able to get reduced unemployment. But now that I’ll be filing a new claim, will this be against my current part time employer? I don’t want to do anything to upset them

    • I was running low on my regular UI, and was going to call about getting moved to PEUC but then I checked my email and there was a determination letter stating I was approved for PEUC benefits and I did nothing. (This is in Ohio) However, my usual payments after tax and child support are always 337$ (not counting the extra 300$) But last week I only received 144$ ? And I don’t know where they got that figure. Maybe it was the last of my UI money? Now I have a total benefits payable of 4,333$ but my remaining balance is at 0$ … I don’t know if I’m going to get paid this week or not after I file my claim. Are unemployment isn’t taking calls now, which they were doing really good at doing for several months. I have no clue what’s going on. The PUA line was still taking calls, which is where I found out someone stole my identity filing a false claim and collected a bunch of money in my name.. while I’m struggling and still waiting on my stimulus checks and tax returns to come after mailing them in 9 months ago. 16. Okay question y’all. I live in NV and have been receiving UI since May 2020. I filed my weekly claim and it shows that by tomorrow I will only receive $12.00 which is the remaining funds from my regular UI claim. It does however show the EUC 13 weeks being now in the ‘Open’ status. My question is, why wouldn’t it pay me my full weekly benefit amount by using the remaining $12.00 plus funds from the now open EUC funds? Do I have to wait another week to get a full benefit amount? Can’t reach anyone to ask either. Stressed! We all are!

    • As I understand it, if you have finished your 26 weeks or monies are exhausted (one or the other has to completely end before the SEB will kick in), and are next going to be paid by State Extended Benefits going forward that is being paid out of a federally funded monies and not by your quarterly amounts, it will however be the same amount you were already qualified for, but will not start until your first one has fully completed.

        • As far as I understand it, there is to be a button under the SmartLinks (which is where the file weekly claim is) that is supposed to say “Apply for State Extended Benefits” when it switches over. I’m not sure if yours says it’s already open, I would say if that link is there at filing time you should probably click on that link, but if it just let’s you file your weekly claim just do that, otherwise unfortunately any other info will probably be a call to them. I will be in the same boat after this week cuz my 26 weeks will end this week and I will have a balance of over $2000 and not sure if it keeps going till it runs out or just stops at the 26 week mark (and then where does that money go, you know). But if it just ends (cuz 26 weeks) I will have to deal with the extended as well, cuz I did get the letter from them telling me I was potentially eligible for extended benefits for the 13 extra weeks but not sure when that button will show up or if it will say extended is open like yours, so up in the air for me right now. After you file this week can you please let me know what process you end up going through so I know what to do when it’s my turn, I would appreciate it here (just reply here). Like you I’m financially in trouble too and have to have surgery so all this mess has made my situation worse, and yeah our state officials really messed this up, they knew before the executive order was even given that our state had to get money from Fema to even pay out our unemployment cuz they didn’t have enough money, but not only did they not apply then, they waited till all the other states applied and at least 11 states had already gotten their money and started paying out their people before our state even applied, and Sisolak finally signed the order on Aug. 25th (LATE LATE) and the DETR didn’t even bother to send it into Fema till Sept. 2nd (EXTREMELY LATE) after the other disasters happened so there wouldn’t be any money left for us. And the whole time the Detr and Sisolak did not say one word to us about all of this and just let this happen to us and is still letting this happen to us, and the money is supposed to be retro-active back till Aug. 1st, but they only get money to pay 3 weeks, IF/by the time we would get any money to help us eat, not get evicted, pay our bills, etc. from no fault of our own the next set of any monies will be gone again, and he won’t apply till the 3 weeks is over AGAIN and it will be another 2 months in between getting any other
money if there is any left (certainly not enough for retro monies), and the DETR say their not setting the system up for giving out the money until they receive it (which will take another 3 weeks) cuz their too lazy to set it up now before the money comes so it would be ready to go. SISOLAK AND DETR HAVE LET EVERYONE DEALING WITH THIS DOWN, AND CAUSING STARVATION AND HOMELESSNESS THEMSELVES, THEY DON’T CARE ABOUT US ONE BIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND I’M SURE THEY ARE EATING AND LIVING JUST FINE, UNLIKE TOO MANY PEOPLE IN NEVADA AREN’T AT THIS POINT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry just had to get that out!

    • Brooke, I also live in Nevada (Vegas). My UI just finished last week with a partial payment, but my EUC claim still says open with a remaining balance. Will it automatically start this week, or, do I need to do something? Are we both in the same boat?

    • I started getting unemployment in April, and then after my 26 wks ran out I started the Pandemic unemployment. As of today I have $250 in my benefits claim balance…but the Benefits Year End has been extended until 3/13/21. My question is will my unemployment end after I do my claim next week, and use the last $250…or will they put more money in my “benefit claim balance”….

      ANYONE KNOW???

    • Same thing just happened to me. I always get 337$ but they only gave me 144$ and now I’m at zero remaining balance but 4,333 benefits payable. I didn’t apply for PEUC they sent me an email saying I was approved that last week I received the remaining balance of UI money. So I’m gonna find out this week if I get my normal payments again.

  17. Hello, in 2 weeks my 26 weeks for the state of Nevada will end, but I will still have a balance of approx. $2000. I have received a letter that says I may potentially be eligible for 13 extended benefits. So my questions are does my claim keep going till the money runs out or when the 26 weeks run out (which is my states maximum week benefit)? And if it ends at 26 weeks, what happens to my remaining balance? And does the button for State Extended Benefits appear under the SmartLinks itself? Or do I have to contact them? And if so at what point do I contact them, when the 26 weeks end or like the week before, etc? Help Thank You!

  18. Hey I’m a little confused … I received unemployment in 2019 not to sure on how many weeks but my claim expired 5/3/2020 I was told I qualify for extended unemployment I started certify benefits in May & in August they sent me a whole deposit of back pay from like 12-13 weeks … my benefits say 0 & my claim expired and it still lets me certify benefits what does this mean? Does it automatically go to PUA ? Or was the extended benefits from 2019 extended more due to pandemic …

  19. This is all confusing, I use to work for unemployment and it was where when one benefit exhaust another one would kick in . I’m in Florida , My PUA exhausted the week before July 25, and I claimed my last two weeks only got payed for one week and additional $600. I did not get PeUC or any extensions even though the initial letter said I would get up to 39 weeks. That did not happen. You can’t talk to no one or get any responses, so I reapplies and it says not registered . I still am not working and did not get any additional weeks as I have read some people are getting.

When I lost my job last August 2019 I never got an additional $600 from federal some how did people get that because I didn’t. I need all I can get. Anyone have any suggestions?

    • How did you exhaust your PUA that early? When did you start claiming PUA?

FPUC $600 supplement ran from March to July 25 so I’m not sure what you mean by you never received it since you lost your job in 2019.

  24. In Arizona I did NOT want to collect any unemployment because my last employer was amazon and I’ve read where they will fight tooth and nail and also at time bring in lawyers but Kia caught fire, a month later this virus occurs uhm I was fired from amazon due to the teenager shifts that a full time father of a 13 year old with add issues and needs a parent there to make sure she’s doing her work! This all fell on me as soon as I started at amazon so after four months I attempted to start a different shift but since I started at the temp agency for amazon I got onto amazon the last month so I didn’t have enough time working with them to be able to have that kind of requests so I was tired literally every day I didn’t have enough time out the day to start a new job like they place drains the life outta ya so they decided after me having to call out as well for my child that they sent a professional letter thru email that I was voluntarily fired uhmmm I did volunteer for that but ok so I attanepted afterwards to work for them again cuz I saw several others when I work their get hired back after walking out the dang job! Plus I had a friend who worked for them a while and was friends with human resource people but as soon as I was to start they would send an email saying I’m not eligible this happened TWICE and they didn’t know why and would make excuses when I would ask why not, so last month filed unemployment ohhhh surprisingly a good amount so I was relieved to be able to have some money for me my daughter. D some bills I kept being reminded everywhere that the extra benefit was going to end this week!!! I heard of people who filed months ago and quit their job and never got bothered by unemployment even some whom cut peoples grass for money under the table but spent the day doing bad things and never got harassed either and collected thousands I overheard by this person so I was like ok I don’t feel that bad plus they were picking out of my old case I had last year but somehow my case expired last week I was notified online so I called them one rep told me oh just file another case just as long as everything is the same and nothing new or if you are still not working you will get your payment and you won’t have a waiting week, money came the next day I kept feeling like they are going to try and invest with others money and hopefully not mines! Just one more week like hopefully they won’t bug, I read in another state one person mention on social media him and his crew that became unemployed due to their company closing down ended up having to pay back! I got nervous and kept my acct but it was ok! Till Sunday I filed my claim and Monday I F****#! See a notification saying their is an active issue! Ugh so I call and like a ton of times cuz they won’t pick up and I spoke to a rep she’s like oh lemme talk to my supervisor gets back on and tells me he said I needed to file ANOTHER claim! So she updated for me without my consent I was like uhhh ok, she said the money should be released the next day, got off the phone checked my acct and I needed to reset my pin I was like what!? So I did that the next day and waited and still no payment I call a ton of times then this rep tells me I need to file a new claim and that my payment should be released next week with the extra benefit if we file before Friday, so I was like ok so he asks me questions that the weekly claims usually asks us, I didn’t believe him when I hung up like I didn’t think his demeanor was 100% so I called back and called back each time being hung up I didn’t want 5 or 6 to come and get hung up on so finally an older guy answers he asks me questions like he didn’t understand why all of this happened so then he sees that my case was sent to an adjudicator and wasn’t sure why no rep has told me and Apologized on their behalf, my jaw dropped I was boiling, I was like their ya go!!! I knew they would make an excuse to not pay the dang extra money this week even though we ended this a week earlier then some states I assume! And I said I bet others had this issue as well so that way they could keep a certain percentage and I bet they harassed the working class! I ended up hanging up on this guy while he was messaging his supervisor asking about the case, he called back tho and thought it happened on accident he was very oroffesional and also mentioned he spoke with the adjudicator to get in touch with me he said it could take 7-21 days or maybe longer cuz of everyone I said WOW so if I somehow get it I get the back pay but I bet minus the extra benefit uhmmm and I have to stress this whole time in the meantime like if this was the case and they actually were not trying to assist the public because mostly half of us probably will get approved for unemployment on a normal basis but I thought oh ok with covid a lot has shut down leaving people without work but the way they are handling it I could only assume it is like nothing has changed since the time ran up so they are being Uncle Scrooge with tax payers money, yes I know it’s the employers insurance but what about the extension!!??? Was that not the other benefit If we were not qualified for regular unemployment? They are totally ignoring that given I was sent a paper stating I was approved for that and saw they placed 3,000 in my case but then when I spoke to the rep and she updated it the next day it was at 5,000 i can almost guarantee if the adjudicator speaks to amazon they are going to say what greedy companies are assigned to say! Uhm so I will be denied immediately but they will still call me speak to me as if they are an insurance adjuster ask questions in a demanding way uhm I have to speak with yes or no and know names of people and go into detail! If what they said and I said add up plus if my reason for being let go is good enough they will grant me the little payments weekly! As a citizen and a dang tax payer always working every year and mostly every month it’s crazy that they couldn’t pay the last payment at the very least then start Behaving this way!!! Or perhaps deny me at first so that way I could know to start pawning belongings and asking relatives for some money to pay bills ahead of time! Yet here I am stressing every day now thanks to greedy Phoenix,az u employment………I feel for y’all that this happened to as well, and sorry this is so long! Haha but gotta explain myself.

  25. Hi there,
I was laid off in May 2018. I was pregnant at the time so I was able to spread my time between severance, disability and unemployment. I found a part time job in April 2019 so I was able to receive reduced unemployment which is now expired. I’ve had 6 interviews for a full time job and no luck. My question is- when I go to the certify screen it tells me that my claim has expired and to file a new claim. Below that, I also have the “certify for weeks” submission window. What will happen to the balance I have left over in the weeks to certify if I file a new claim? Should I wait until I’ve exhausted all the balance? Or will it roll into the new claim balance? Basically my claim expired but since I’ve been collecting so little every two weeks since I work part time, I still have a balance and I don’t want to lose that.
    Thank you for your input!

    • If your claim has has expired you will have to file again, which may impact your claim balance based on the assessment your state UI agency undertakes.

  26. Texas here – in January of 2019 I was in a major car accident, no fault of my own. Due to my injuries I missed a lot of work and was let go. I filed a claim with unemployment in 4/2019. I received 26 weeks of benefits. Keep in mind in the last 10 years my annual salary was over $120,000. I am a single parent with 2 small children. I received a total of $13,000 for 26 weeks. I have exhausted all my savings and retirement. After 8 months of looking for a job covid -19 hit, I was in the final stages of the hiring process and would have made about what my previous salary was. Covid hit instinct hiring freeze. In May I received a letter from Texas unemployment stating I was eligible for the 13 week extension. I received 8 weeks and the my weekly claims started to reflect ineligible, but my balance has $2500 remaining. I called Texas unemployment 387 time July 3, 2020 at 7:00am. Someone answered and transferred me to tier 2, I waited on hold for 3 hours and 17 minutes. When I got a representative she was as helpful as I honestly think she could be. She said my original claim from 4/2019 has expired and I needed to file a new claim. I honestly just lost it. I wasn’t rude I just started crying. The woman so kind. She listen to my entire story just as I have present it above. Then she re-filed my claim for me while I wait on the phone. It took 45 minutes because she really wanted it to be right. She advised I keep filing my weekly claim. I asked her I would receive the remaining amount from my first claim, she wasn’t sure. I asked her when my new claim would start to pay again she didn’t know. I have lost my life savings, my retirement, my house, and had to file bankruptcy. I’m not sure what’s next but at this point I’m like everyone else who has a story. Still haven’t received a penny

    • The way I understand it, yes because the virus affected your job. You should be entitled to get it. Apply and see what they say. On line.

      Reply
    • Yes, you should be able to qualify for PUA apply ASAP, you may get back pay from the last week you worked and onward. That would be the minimum you qualify based on your previous work history. For example like $119.00 minimum weekly or more plus the $600 FPUC also applies automatically weekly. You will have to file your weekly claim after the application is done and claims, also for any previous weeks there online when you file your first weekly claim to ensure to get that back pay. That’s quite a few weeks to claim at first but worth it to get your back pay if possible.

Will I automatically receive the state and federal 13 week extension? The initial letter states my state will expire after 12 weeks, but will receive an extra $600 per week through 7/25/2020. What does all this mean? tia

Same for me (I’m in CA). Late last week I went to the website and logged in and I stated “check back to certify after 7/12”. Yesterday I received a letter from EDD saying an extension for 13 weeks would continue. As far as the additional $600, who knows?
Check the website, I hope you it works out for you!

    • To my understanding if it’s unemployment insurance that is exhausted because the 52 weeks of your claim year ended… you can file a new claim and receive something in the mail to return by fax or mail if you are qualified for more weeks of unemployment insurance. However one must file weekly claims during this time until approved again for payment. Otherwise, if you exhausted funds entirely you can apply for PUA and get those funds because regular UI is exhausted.

  30. I’m reading many situations that relate to my own. Basically, I am unemployed in TN, but my balance is zero this week and my claim year doesn’t end until 11/28/2020. Has anyone received any news since May of this year on the 13-week extension? I see on my state’s website they implemented it but I don’t see anywhere on the website where I can reapply for PUA. I was on a regular unemployment claim that restarted last January/February of this year. They were drawing from my balance on that. I was nervous about re-applying, but no one was replying back to my emails to them and I figured until my balance was zero, would I know if I could re-apply. The message I keep getting of course is I have to re-apply after my claim year ends on 11/28/2020- have anyone’s state updated their website? I see very little on my own state’s about re-applying for PUA extension and ironically the PUA information says if someone’s benefit year ends OR their balance is zero, can they re-apply. I don’t understand. UGH. Guess I will keep trying to call them to see how I can be on the 13-week extension. I am still waiting for a job to begin training.

    • Lesie, just send one email asking for pua or peuc. Your extention will be automatically filed a few weeks after you exaust your current benifits.
I just sent one email and maybe called a few times per week. I never got a jold of any one like that but did get the extention several weeks later. They will back pay you. Also there are lots of gig jobs and new employment available you can apply and work and still get benifits as long as we report income.

      • Who do I send the email to. My unemployment ran out last week and the system will not allow me to re apply. It keeps telling me that my money has run out and I cannot re apply until after my year ends in December 2020.

        Reply
        • You cannot reapply for benefits until your benefit year is over; however, you can apply for PUA or PEUC. Simply google PEUC and your state. On the site it will tell you whether your state is accepting applications from “any” of the cares act benefits. When you fill out the application for PEUC. you will be given an appication number (just write down for your records). continue to file your weekly claims and be patient. They are working thru a backlog (most states). Starting this Sunday you will need your unemployment PIN to file your weekly claim.

It’s really simple once they start accepting applications. Its a process though. You may have to wait a little time. Hope this helps!

        • If you were on UI..? Have you tried to apply for the PUA after your funds exhausted in UI? Online states one may apply for PUA once UI is exhausted or denied, it may help to apply.

        • You can’t reapply until your benefit year jas ended. To receive PUA or PEUC you are not reapplying for unemployment. Those are benefits. If your state has started the PEUC you can go on your state unemployment site and of you are able to receive funding at that time there will be a link to apply. You will receive a confirmation number and your benefits within a few weeks (maybe not all at once either). Hope this helps.

        • For both Leslie and Kathy,
I was in the exact same situation. The site says to just login and re-apply, but the system doesn’t allow that. I never got a response to any email I sent nor the online issue form. Nor did anyone ever return the phone call when you leave a voice mail.
HOWEVER, I read that Saturday morning is a good time to call. So, I did. And, it worked! I called just after 8am when they open on weekends. After a long wait, someone finally answered. They were awesome and actually filed the extension for me as well back dated a weekly certification so I was caught up. They literally created a brand new claim, with a new start, dated to last the extra 13 weeks.
The site is still messed up, showing only my old claim EXCEPT for the Weekly Certification page. It shows the new certifications with a new claim number. AND, as of 15 minutes ago, the certification line shows a transaction number. So, it looks like I will finally be getting paid for something that was should have been seamless.
I would be VERY nervous to just send an email and hope that the extension eventually shows up. Nothing I have ever done (email, online issue form, Wage Dispute, voice mail for return calls) has EVER been answered over the course of 4 months. But, at least there is hope with that early weekend call.
          Good luck!

    • i’m currently having the same troubles! my claim benefits exhausted two weeks ago and i still don’t have a job due to COVID. i get the same message everytime saying i cannot file until my benefit year ends, but i’ve had friends refile for the extension and it works for them. i’m still trying to get ahold of anyone from the TN DOL but nothing. i hope you’re able to file!

    • Hello, so when I had to apply for unemployment in mid March bc of everything shutting down, I had a seamless process, was accepted as a Covid claim, etc. and was anticipating my benefits depositing, my account would show my full balance, that I was accepted, and payment sent, but no deposit to my account. Your situation sounds similar, what the issue wound up being was that they had incorrectly entered by bank routing and account info so the payment was rejected and so while my claim tracker showed everything being fine w/ my claim, payment issued and pending do to further info needed or something. At the tiMe I was freaking out bc I couldn’t get ahold of anyone at ADOL, and I didn’t know what the issue was and I desperately needed the money. So after a month of spending everyday literally calling non stop from the time they open till they closed, only to get busy signals every time, I saw a comment from a guy on twitter saying he had a similar deal and he emailed the treasurer for the states unemployment and labor department, and within 24 hours it was resolved and his mo etc showed up in his account. So at this point I really coming unglued trying to get this sorted and trying to reach anyone to get help, we’ll sure enough I decided to try his advice on a whim. I found the treasurer’s email address for ADOL online, emailed her stating the issue, and how I had been advised to attempt contacting her to correct the account info and get it sorted, sure enough she responded with in an hour, told me to email her my correct routing and account info, And the following day she emailed to say it was fixed and I should receive my deposit without a few days, and the next day a deposit for several thousand direct deposited to my account (it was my whole months worth of payments). If I had not seen that guys post, I don’t know what would have happened bc this was I the spring when all hell was breaking lose with unemployment and no one could reach any one in any states and the only thing I had gotten was a note saying there was a issue with my information and they needed additional details and to watch for a letter that had been sent and it would explain what they needed, well I never did receive any letter from them about it. I just got lucky w/ this guys tweet and him responding to my message telling me what to do. I shudder to think of how things would have gone if I’d just say waiting for that letter that never came or trying to email or call everyday only to never get through. I had a friend drive 4 hours to Montgomery to resolve a similar issue with her claim bc you just couldn’t get any assistance if even the tinniest snag is hit while your claim is processing. AnywAy, I would recommend you try to see if this is the issue w/ yours and if you can email the treasure at your states dept. of labor to see if maybe you can get some help sorting it out that way. Good luck and sorry for the long response, just wanted to pay forward what that stranger did for me. Hope it helps.

    • How long have you been waiting for them? Usually they come within a few days once everything is processed, I would double check that they have the correct routing and account info for your direct deposit. They miss enter that stuff a lot, my payments were delayed by a month bc of this and I know of many other folks that had the same thing happen. I would recommend you start there and check that first if it’s been more than a week or two without you recieving payments. Good luck

    • My claim year ended and also shows I exhausted benefits. Since I had an unemployment claim activated in May 2019 and was not approved at the time… when I was laid off this year February 2020 I opened my claim and was approved from April 2020 to May 2020. I did not receive a full 26?weeks of UI. My claim year ended May 23, 2020. I refiled my claim with unemployment insurance And have been filing weekly claims and am waiting now still for the payments to be approved. I’ve called Unemployment and the status is waiting on an adjudicator, I may still qualify for a weekly amount if approved. I seen on google that one can apply for PUA once regular unemployment insurance is exhausted, or if one is denied Unemployment insurance. So if you exhausted funds or are denied for any reason the PUA application is available. My friend was approved for PUA and has to file weekly claims… just like unemployment to get funds. I hope this information helps you

So I filed back on May 5th and haven’t received my number but did get the award letter and all those cert forms. I mailed those back but they were never put into the system. Here is a way to get your customer number so awesome. They were about to close my claim if I hadn’t done this to log I to my ui online account. So before 6:30pm pacific log in on the edd website and select the sdi claim basically u create a disability account selecting make a claim and fill out the info required. Don’t worry u aren’t apply for disability yet just making an account. At the end when u submit it tells you your customer number u need that they didn’t send to u. I hope that helps because I had to go through and certify for every week starting in March so good luck. Cheers

I’ve been on unemployment for the longest I could and my benefit year expired Jan 15, 2020 and then lucky me, the clouds parted and I just happened to have found a job that was supposed to start Feb 11, even though I couldn’t seem to find one for an entire year. But then Covid-19 happened (ugh, the timing) and now I can’t work. But I did get to file for PUA because I don’t have enough wages to qualify me for regular unemployment. I didn’t even have to show my tax return. Lucky me again, because I don’t file tax returns but I’m getting PUA anyway because all I did was self certify and say I was starting a job on Feb 11 but couldn’t because of Covid-19, even though Covid-19 wasn’t an issue here in the US at that time. Can I backdate my claim to Feb 2 because I just realized I made a mistake and that’s when I was supposed to start working? Remember, that’s the job I suddenly found after being unemployed for the whole year and collecting the max time I could squeeze out of unemployment. When this claim expires do you think I’ll get an extension? I’m sure something Covid related will mess it up again, I just want to be prepared because they owe me! That’s MY money that my employer paid into the system!

  35. Hi guys please help. I had a 4,629 balance with $167 a week. I did my claim in March 2020, and was paid no problem until now! and I received a letter for extension and my balance was going to be 7,652! With $258 a week. I went to certify and it says I’m now on 3,200 claim balance with $258 a week on 2018 extension?! What? And my weeks were disqualified. Do I need to open a new PUEC claim? I called someone yesterday and she said someone would fix it or call me if more info is needed. But I got a letter saying it would go automatically

        • Hi James,

I’m in California and when I was automatically extended benefits in April when I exhausted them. The site said, “You have claimed all payable benefits to you at this time and no extension is available.” It said this for what I thought was eons as bills started stacking up and I was going to be homeless again!? (But thats another story)
Finally around June 13th I received the back pay from April and my pandemic benefit which is less than usual because I’m on a school extension. Its a C.T.B approved program but don’t ask me what the acronym means because our system has just lost it for now.
Furthermore don’t let it scare you because I work seasonally at a huge food processing facility and we are laid off every year and exhaust our benefits every year! So if I’m not in school or working another gig between my seasonal position I can go thru some pretty hard times.
Your story caught my eye because I’m a Dad too. I don’t live with the baby mama but maybe one day for being a good dad and person to my little family I will earn it. Its not all that easy for some of us men in life and know that in your journey the struggle is only the beginning and eventually life will always balance my friend.
          Cheers to you for checking!

        • EDD Automatically files it for you. My suggestion to you is to contact them through the website to make sure they do. when you login, it’s on the contact us tab and send them an email reminding them your balance has run out. They will send you a message when they filed your extension

        • Yes James, they will automatically file it for you. Check your inbox, they will send you an email regarding PEUC extension, keep certifying for work search.

        • James be sure to check your UI account online, they sent me a message about renewing my claim that i filled out online, and then the PEUC kicked it. But nothing they sent me ever mentioned “PEUC” per se. But it was for 13 weeks and I just filed for the last week of that. Hoping that they will put me onto FedEd next. Waiting for a notice, checking online, looking for mail. It’s a waiting game. If not, you must call in which takes forever I hear. Crossing my fingers for you. jamb

    • Hey I have a question, so I’m on the last of my Benefits for the PUA I have 220$ left in my claim which is only one more payment but I was wondering if I will still continue to get the 600$ payment till the end of July?

      Reply
      • You do need $1 of regular state UI to get the state UI. Have you gotten the 13 week extension (for a total of 39 weeks in most states)? If you get this you can get the $600 for a longer period.

        • Hey I am having same issue and got 13 weeks of extension, but the amount didn’t change to add up number and also the remaining balance is payment is for one more payment, before the end of july ,
          please assist

        • So if I don’t have anymore benefits in my regular claim I won’t be able to get the 600$ Without the 220$ still till the end of July? Or does the 600$ stop before the end of July if your regular benefits run out?

        • Yes I got the extension but I’m on the last payment of my actual benefits but I was wondering if I would still be Able to collect just the 600$ PUA benefits without my regular weekly benefits?

      • Hi Joshua, it depends on your week certification, if you have a week certifying up to July 25,
you will still get the 600.

Everything went smoothly with retroactive then I got another payment for the prior week but now I’m waiting on 3 weeks and Everytime I call they tell me they don’t know how long this verification process is going to take. Mean while I’m hurting bad I applied for food stamps they told me I’m not eligible because I’m on Pua but I’m not getting my payments because of delays i am so stressed out I can’t even order a freaking dam pizza.

    • Hi Michael, just certify the weeks that are available online, check the payment status after 1 hour and check again if you have another week to certify, keep doing that until no more weeks are available to certify.

  38. Hello, I filed my California UI claim in October 2019 (claim periid would expire in October 2020). My last regular UI payment was in early May 2020 and EDD stated I had exhausted my benefits. I tried to contact EDD via telephone and email (unsuccessfully) re status of the federal extension. On 5/27/2020, I received an electronic message that the EDD was determining if claimants were eligible for the PEUC extension (13 weeks) and would send out letters in 1 to 2 weeks. Today (5/30/20) I logged onto my EDD account and was advised to certify for the prior 2 weeks. So the California EDD has apparently started implementing phase 1 of the PEUC extension. I hope this information helps. Thank you to everyone for sharing information.

I certified and it showed disqualification for those weeks. I don’t know why and what to do about it as I can’t get ahold of anyone. Should I Appeal or wait?

My UI benefits had expired 2/20/20 with the year ending 8/20. I was losing hope….

Now lets just see when I will receive the funds.
Good luck, keep looking and hoping!

I was either getting CTB or Pandemic because I had a CTB application in before the COVID19 started.

So I basically am receiving a 16 week CTB Extension of $4.200.00

I still am currently unemployed but actively looking for work. I have bills coming up and have heard nothing from unemployment. I see people saying they will automatically apply these benefits but I have not received an email or any notification. Am I not eligible? Can someone please help me if they have any info on my case? Thank you in advance this is very frustrating being that I ran out of benefits during this coronavirus pandemic.

Re: Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) Extension

You are potentially eligible for a Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) extension under the CARES Act of 2020. The PEUC extension provides an additional 13 weeks of UI benefits. If the EDD determines that you are not eligible for a subsequent valid UI claim, then the EDD will automatically file a PEUC extension on your last valid regular UI claim. You should receive a notice by mail within the next 10-14 business days. Continue to certify for benefits as weeks become available.

      Thank you,

      EDD

Please find on EDD help box, type PEUC and the info below will appear.

Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) provides an additional 13 weeks of benefits if you’ve used all of your Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits. To make benefits available as quickly as possible, we will be adding the extension in two phases:

      · Phase 1 – On May 27, we will start automatically filing PEUC extensions for those who used all benefits on claims that started on or after June 2, 2019. You will get a notice in the mail about 5-7 days after we file the extension. This notice will have instructions on certifying for extension benefit payments if you are still unemployed. Check the inbox of your UI OnlineSM account for updates.

      · Phase 2 – In early July, we will start mailing notices to those who used all their UI benefits after July 2018 who were not included in Phase 1. If you are still unemployed, you can apply for another UI claim in UI Online. We have to make sure you qualify for a new UI claim before we can file an extension.

      Hope this helps out.

Perhaps you can wait a few more days and get a text message hopefully..

    • I am in a similar situation and also live in TN, where my regular state UI benefits claim exhausted just a couple of weeks ago and it would not allow the weekly certification process to complete or so it appears so for two weeks I’ve been trying to contact someone about the extension. No there is not any link on jobs4tn site, but additionally it will not permit another claim to file until like the end of the year!! It’s crazy confusing plus I have not received any information on the mail.

I was able to certify all weeks post dated up until this most recent week. The screen refreshed after the first 2 week certification; then allowed me to continue certifying two weeks at a time. you may want to check again. I went to my inbox and then back to home screen after each two week certification had been completed. At that point screen was refreshed and allowed next 2 week certification.

        Hope this helps!!

        • Thanks Kaila! I was able to certify for all of the weeks, however my certification is still pending. We’re you already paid for your certifications or is yours still pending too? It’s been about a week so I’m getting concerned.

        • Hi,
I was able to certify for 8 weeks as of last Friday. Only 4 of those weeks went directly into my checking account which I had previously set up. The other 4 went into B of A debit card. They said too many weeks were certified at once, hence the split deposits. Grateful to have received anything!

        • Barbara,
It allowed me to do up to 8 weeks as well but it shows it as PAID which its not. Did they give you the full amount $450 plus the $600 total $1,050 weekly? Also how long did it take to receive your payment from the time you filed?

        • Hi,
Once I filed for all 8 weeks, it showed some as paid ($450 + $600) the following business day on the EDD site, then a day or so later, the others showed as paid. 4 of the total 8 weeks went directly into my checking account while the other 4 went directly into the BofA EDD card. Let’s see how the next certify date goes which should be on 6/7 . Good luck!

  45. Hi everyone,

I’m posting what I saw on EDD site today..

My question is… EDD Rep Misfiled my claim. He filed a PUA claim and Denied me and I was told to Appeal. I do not qualify for PUA. Due to his mistake, my claim status is Disqualified. He was suppose to file a PEUC claim. Will EDD automatically DISREGARD the misfiled claim?? Does Anyone know?

    Thank you

Thank you for the blessings…I really need it. I’m glad I was able to help you. Right now, my claim certification status says, Disqualified and I’m not able to certify for benefits so I am very concerned how it’s going affect me in getting my money and how soon. I’m in such despair not getting paid since March 15,2020.

  46. Hi, I am in CA… I Exhausted my benefit on March 15, 2020.

People who are unemployed, please know the difference which benefit you need to file. My claim was misfiled by EDD Rep and now it is delaying me to receive my payment. The EDD Rep filed a PUA claim and Denied me and I was told to Appeal. I do not qualify for PUA, I NEED PEUC benefit.

Right now, I am seeking assistance from my local State Senate Office to help me resolve my case.

Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) is for people
self-employed workers, freelancers, independent contractors, and part-time workers impacted by the coronavirus pandemic in 2020.

Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) is for people
who have exhausted their unemployment compensation benefits to receive up to 13 additional weeks of benefits, provided they “are able to work, available to work, and actively seeking work.”

Then Unemployment tells me I am not eligible for the $600.00 Cares money because I am not eligible for unemployment. Vicious circle of them not knowing their right from left hand. No one is willing to help. I even completed an application on PEGA and the claim number assigned to me they claim doesn’t belong to me. I had read on a post here that someone said they called the number (833) 978-2511 and after hearing “Welcome” they press 9 and it would say “Thank you…..unable to take calls…” then after the 20th time it went to music and they were on hold for the next available person. I had to tweek her suggestion. Every time I entered 9 after hearing welcome, it would said, “Your call cannot be completed at this time.” So instead I listen to recording up to the point where it said to press 1 for English. So then right after hearing press 1 for English, I pressed 1 then I pressed 9 and it would go to the “Thank you….. unable. I kept doing this and on the 86th time I called in after press the 9 it went to music and from there to a live person. I got through at 7:50 pm. She filed my paperwork and said I would get a notice in the mail within a week to let me know if I qualify for the 13 week extension. My original claim ran out on 5/12/20 which was when my funds went to Zero. Side note the previous post about this said they got through just before 8pm also. Maybe less calls that late. About 25 out of my 86 calls were through out the day and all the rest were from about 6:30 pm until I got through at 7:50 pm, one right after another. Hope this info helps. Good luck.
