Virginia (VA) VEC Unemployment 2022-2023 benefits – Latest News and Updates After Pandemic Benefit Programs Expire

The Virginia Employment Commission (VEC) administers the unemployment compensation program for the Commonwealth. This includes the now expired pandemic enhanced unemployment benefits, for which all current and retroactive payments have now been issued, other than those under appeal or litigation.

Fortunately, the lessons learned from and system upgrades as a result of the pandemic mean the VEC now has better systems and process to take, pay and monitor unemployment benefits. See the sections below for current and past unemployment programs in the states, including some FAQs and following comments forum.

How Much Unemployment Can I Get Paid In Virginia?

With the expiry the pandemic unemployment programs, only traditional/regular state unemployment is available for full or partial unemployment claims. The table below provides key details on the latest unemployment benefits and qualifying wage requirements.

You will need to submit a claim or certify your application via the state’s unemployment website (see section below on filing a claim) to get your actual weekly benefit amount.

Note that to qualify for unemployment, your job or hours worked loss will generally need to be involuntary. I.e. through no fault of your own or via directly quitting. Your job and wages must also have been paid/covered by an employer or source that deducted unemployment insurance taxes per state law (see your paycheck).

Further if you are being paid severance via a layoff or able to use sick leave or paid vacation, you cannot claim unemployment.

You will also need to certify for benefits at weekly intervals, demonstrate ongoing work availability and evidence of job search requirements to keep getting weekly unemployment benefits.

Weekly Unemployment Available with Dependents (Min – Max)$60 – $378
Benefit Duration12 to 26 weeks, in addition to first week waiting period where no benefits are paid
Minimum Qualifying Income over Base PeriodEarned greater than $3,000 in two quarters in the base period. To get maximum benefit amount, must have earned over $18,900 in same period
Part-Time Income or Workers – UI benefits impactIf weekly gross income is less than WBSA, that gross income less $50 will be deducted from your weekly benefit amount. If weekly earnings > WBA, no benefits will be paid.

Why is my weekly benefit payment lower than the maximum amount?

Your actual weekly benefit amount (WBA) is the amount of money your state agency has determined you and your dependents may receive for regular unemployment insurance after filing a claim. This can change weekly based on your certification or claim for benefits.

Your actual WBA is based on the amount that you earned over the states pre-defined base or alternate wage period, which are generally based on four out of the last five completed calendar quarters spanning 12 to 18 months.

The higher your earnings, the higher your approved WBA will be, up to the maximum amount allowed in the state. All earnings must be subject to UI tax (covered employment) to be eligible for factoring into your benefit determination.

Any part time or temporary earnings from employment or other activities during eligible weeks you are claiming and certifying for benefits, will potentially reduce the amount of benefits you may get.

Also note that that your state UI agency may deduct overpayments and court-ordered child support from your weekly payment. This will reduce your WBA.

What if I worked or lived in another state?

If you worked or lived in another state during the base year, you should file your unemployment benefits claim in the state you worked in and where your wages were reported. Not where you reside at the time of claim. You can file a claim in multiple states.

Your claim will be paid and governed by laws of that state in which you applied for. You will need to report this on your state and federal income taxes per form 1099-G issued by the state’s UI agency.

Claimants will also need to apply or reapply for UI benefits when they reach the end of their benefit year.

End of Federal Enhanced Benefits in Virginia (PUA, PEUC, $300 FPUC and $100 MEUC)

The VEC has confirmed that claimants on the PEUC, PUA, MEUC and FPUC programs will file/certify for benefits for the last time covering the week ending September 4, 2021. Since the beginning of these programs, the VEC has issued over $14 Billion in benefits.

Any active claims, with or without remaining balances, will expire after this date and any weeks after Sep 5th will NOT be paid. The only exception are retroactive payments for validated claims after a successful determination or appeal.

While there has been a lot of discussion around extending pandemic unemployment benefits, the Biden administration has confirmed (see video) that states will have to use already allocated stimulus funding to expand or extend traditional state unemployment programs. The VEC has not indicated that is planning to do so at this stage, but I will post updates if things change.

Some claimants may be eligible for State Extended Benefits (SEB), but after September 4th all claimants must have a regular UI claim to continue receiving benefits. Also see the VEC website for other support and benefit programs.

Work Search Requirements Causing Benefit Payment Issues

Over the last few months many claimants have reported that their UI benefits have stopped, particularly since the VEC reinstated work search requirements, which their antiquated systems have struggled to process (especially for PUA claims). This is despite eligible claimants applying for jobs and reporting this on their weekly claims. The Benefit Year End Date (BYE), discussed in earlier updates below, does not seem to be the cause of the issue in most cases.

Governor Northam had asked claimants to be patient, despite Virginia being ranked among the worst states in paying claims, but this is not of much help to the many jobless workers who rely on federal and state unemployment benefits to pay for essentials and make ends meet.

Coupled with ongoing fraudulent claims many claimants have been caught in a web of automated call systems and process bureaucracy as their claims go unpaid. Getting hold of a live VEC agent has also been a challenge with many reporting hours of hold times and/or getting an untrained/new agent who is not able to help them (see some VEC contact options)

While the VEC, in a recent court hearing, said it had made significant progress in resolving thousands of unpaid and retroactive claims, it is estimated over 50,000 claims are still pending for review. Because a lot of these claims have to be checked manually so it could unfortunately take several months for eligible claimants to get paid – which the VEC has to legally to so. I will post updates as I get them and check the comments forum below for more information.

Reminder for Work Search requirements (Required for claims to be paid)

You must register online to get paid or at a workforce services agency if you live outside Virginia. Beginning the week of May 30th, you must actively make at least two job contacts each week and report the details online or over the phone: For regular UI claimants, online at www.getgov2go.com or over the phone at 800-897-5630; For PUA claimants, you must call 866-832-2363 and follow the prompts to file your weekly claim

Is Virginia Ending ALL Pandemic Unemployment Benefits Early – Including $300 Supplementary Weekly Benefit

Following recent job reports and state wide labor shortages, many states have announced an end to participation in one or more federally funded pandemic unemployment programs in the coming weeks. This covers the termination of PUA, PEUC, $300 FPUC and $100 MEUC programs extended under the Biden ARPA stimulus bill discussed below.

The argument is that these generous unemployment benefits deter lower income workers (who make less than $15 p/hour) from returning to work. Opponents argue that the reason people are not going back to work is due to fears around getting COVID, child care and schooling constraints.

At this stage the VEC has not received any instructions from the Governor to end the unemployment programs early, but given the worker shortage in the state there will likely be a lot of pressure from businesses to end these programs earlier than planned, as was the case in neighboring Maryland. I’ll update as more information comes to hand.

Biden Stimulus Bill Extensions

Under President Biden’s $1.9 trillion federal coronavirus relief package, known as the American Rescue Plan (ARP), enhanced unemployment benefits have been extended until September 6th (week ending September 4th in Virginia). This includes further extensions to the PUA program, PEUC program, $300 weekly payment under the FPUC program and $100 Mixed Earners (MEUC) program.

There were also provisions in the Biden Stimulus package for Unemployment tax breaks on the first $10,200 of benefits received in 2020.

VA VEC Latest News and Status on PUA, PEUC and $300 Weekly Payment or Claim Issues and System Updates

The VEC has provided the following updates for claimants around the extended coverage period funded under the Biden ARP stimulus bill:

  • You do not need to reapply for the extended benefit weeks. The VEC will automatically enroll you in the appropriate program extension (PUA or PEUC).
  • However, if you are notified that your benefit year (BYE) has ended you must file a new traditional claim (UI) to establish a new benefit year.
  • You should continue to file your weekly claim for benefits as you normally would as long as you remain unemployed.
  • You will not need to contact the VEC in order for these program extensions to take effect. The VEC will mail you a Monetary determination that reflects the increase in eligibility.
  • The additional weekly payment of $300 under the FPUC program will be extended through September 4, 2021 as well.
  • The Mixed Earner Unemployment Compensation (MEUC) program which provides $100 extra per week to non PUA recipients who have had mixed income (W2 and 1099) will be available from April 26, 2021.

There are however some known issues many claimants are reporting per the comments forum below this article. This includes:

  • PUA payment delays due to additional documentation requirements per updated DOL guidelines or proof of ongoing job searches as part of reinstatement of the weekly work search requirement.
  • Its still hard to get through to someone at the VEC for those whose benefits have lapsed. Keep trying as in some instances you will need a VEC rep to manually progress your claim or to provide additional information to verify your claim.
  • Certifying over the app has caused some issues in which case calling to certify (1 866 832-2363) has provided a workaround.
  • Many are reporting scam emails to potential claimants asking for personal and private data. Do not share this online or to people you don’t know. Only go to the VEC site to load documents and provide required certifications. If an email address doesn’t end in vec.virginia.gov, it’s not a real VEC address!
  • While the PUA and PEUC extensions are now available till Sep 4th, many people are reporting a lapse in benefits, which is mainly due to the need to provide additional documentation (PUA claimants) or not filing a new claim after you have reached your benefit year end.
  • Some people who returned to work and stopped claiming benefits, but are now unemployed again are having a tough time reinstating claim due to manual checks the VEC has to do, which is taking more time than expected. Retroactive payments will be made for eligible weeks but this is a known issue.

I will post ongoing updates as they are released so stay tuned via the options below.

2021 Unemployment Program Extensions Under COVID Relief Bill

The $900 billion COVID-19 relief package was passed into law on Dec. 27, 2020, which among several other pandemic relief measures extends and provides additional federal funding for enhanced unemployment benefits. This includes the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA), Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) and a reinstatement, but halving of the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) Program which provides a $300 supplemental weekly unemployment payment.

These programs have been funded and extended for 11 weeks, covering the weeks of December 27th, 2020 to March 14th, 2021. PEUC and PUA programs have a phase out period where existing claimants with remaining weeks/balances can file for benefits until the week ending April 10th, 2021. The first week people would be eligible for these payments under the extended coverage period would be the week ending January 2nd, 2021. You can see a summary of the latest VA VEC payment dates in this video and in the commentary below. Also scroll to the end of the article where some helpful readers have provided comments on working through challenges with unemployment claims and getting through to the VEC and talking to a live agent.

2021 PEUC and PUA programs extension – Reinstatement and Reapplying for benefits

Get your biggest tax refund, guaranteed. Get started today.

(Feb 17th, 2021 update) The PUA program eleven-week extension is now showing up for most claimants in line with the VEC update below. As a result existing claimants can certify and should start getting payments, including retroactive payments, in early February. New PUA applications are also being accepted. For those who have yet to receive their payment it is like due to some issues with your claim that may need manual processing (e.g. flagged for fraud or additional wage evidence), which the VEC is working through and sending notices to impacted claimants.

The PEUC program 11-week updates have now been rolled out for those who exhausted their benefits and for new claimants. If you have exhausted the original 13 weeks of benefits under the PEUC program you can then be considered for an additional 11 weeks of extended benefits under the CAA COVID relief bill. After several weeks of delay the VEC finally announced the rollout of the extended PEUC weeks (PEUC 2.0) in two different stages based on claimant group as follows:

Group I – PEUC claimants who have exhausted their initial 13-week benefit and have claimed weeks through 12/26/20 will have the additional 11 weeks automatically added to their claim and should not file a new claim. They should continue filing weekly claims. Payment for weeks claimed beginning with the week ending 01/02/21 will be automatically released from 02/09/21 and customers should receive money (including retroactive payments as well hopefully) as early as Thursday 2/11/21.

Group II – PEUC claimants who are not able to file a weekly claim must file a new PEUC 2021 claim. The application is not available via going to getgov2go.com. New claimants can create an account online or by calling 1-866-832-2363. Those who file a new claim can start claiming weeks for payment once their application has been processed, usually in 1-2 business days. The extra $300 FPUC weekly payment will be also be paid for the 11-weeks of extra PEUC.

(PEUC claimants with remaining original balances) If you did not exhaust your 13 weeks of PEUC prior to December 27th, 2020 you will be allowed to claim additional weeks. VEC has updated their UI benefit systems to allow for these changes. Individuals in this category should now be able to claim the remaining weeks beginning with the benefit week ending January 2nd, 2020. Payments, including retroactive payments, will be made shortly after that.

(PUA claimants with remaining balances) If you did not exhaust your 39 weeks of PUA you can now claim the additional weeks.

Getting the $300 Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) in Virginia

The program will add an additional $300 each week that you receive benefits under the following programs: regular Unemployment Insurance (UI), State Extended Benefits (EB), Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) and Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC). This additional benefit will be added to and retroactive to the week ending January 2, 2021. FPUC will be payable as long as you are eligible through benefit week ending March 14, 2021. This is NOW available to all people who can claim benefits, which are subject to the PUA and PEUC dates noted above.

Final guidelines on these programs and final eligibility (including additional document verification procedures to combat Fraud) have been issued by the Department of Labor and the VEC is rolling out these changes (see latest VEC update)

Claimants with existing or expired claim balances should be aware of the following general guidelines:

  • PUA and PEUC, FPUC will be automatically added to the claimants’ benefits if they are eligible for the weeks outlined in the new legislation.
  • Claimants with weeks remaining in UI should continue to file weekly claims
  • Claimants who will have additional weeks in UI and PUA or PEUC due to state provisions (where applicable) should watch their state agency UI portal or website for updates that will allow additional weeks to be filed (see potential scenarios where you need to take action to get benefits under the new extension)
  • Claimants will be retroactively caught up on payments for all weeks they are eligible.

I will post additional updates as they are released by the VEC in coming days

Backlog of UI payments continue to be processed

After being threatened with a lawsuit, the VEC decided to pay unemployment benefits (from 12/10) to thousands of Virginians whose claims had previously been on hold because they were “awaiting a staff review.” State officials decided to go ahead and proactively pay the applicants while their claims make their way through the determination process.

But if the determination process finds the recipients were not due the money, they will have to pay it back, possibly along with interest and fees. So ensure your application is valid and you are eligible for program benefits.

Lost Wages Assistance (LWA) in Virginia – Payments now processing and being paid

The VEC has processed and made all weekly payments under the Lost Wages Assistance program (LWA). That started processing payments around October 16th and payments started hitting people’s bank accounts or debit cards from October 19th.

Amounts to qualified applicants were paid retroactively to August 1 for 6 weeks (up to $1800 in total if you qualified for all 6 weeks). Several readers have acknowledged the lack of information and delayed payment relative to other states as you can see in the comments below. The original payment date was Sep 30, but got changed several times by the VEC due to ongoing system programming issues. This is much later than other states. I will continue to post updates if new information comes to hand. See further details in the section below including a link to the VA LWA page.

Update from Bill on VEC issues – “So thanks to the assistance of all those on this site I was able to call the VEC [on October 13th] and actually speak to someone regarding the $300. If you are on UI, PEUC, or anything but PUA you will have to call or self certify for LWA to receive the extra $300 retro pay. Also I was told that the payments will start being processed on the 15th of October and the money will hit accounts Thursday the 15th, Friday the 16th or Monday the 19th just depending on your institution or payment method. October 15th is the processing date. So I was told not to panic if the money is not in on the 15th. I hope this helps y’all Virginians.”

COVID 19 Enhanced (CARES Act) Benefits in Virginia

Under the CARES act, there are three types of federal unemployment assistance available:

• Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA): expands eligibility for traditionally ineligible individuals for unemployment benefits, including independent contractors and self-employed individuals.  Recipients may receive up to 39 weeks of benefit payments under this program.

• Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC): adds $600 per week and the regular benefits that recipients of Unemployment Insurance are entitled to receive; the benefit is retroactive to the week beginning March 29, 2020, and the program expired on July 31, 2020.

• Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC): provides an additional 13 weeks of Unemployment benefits to regular unemployment insurance recipients.

If you have exhausted benefits paid through the regular unemployment and PEUC program, you may be entitled to receive up to 50% of the total amount received on your regular unemployment benefits through the Extended Benefit (EB) program. This program covers an additional 6 to 13 weeks of unemployment benefits, depending upon the number of weeks you were eligible for benefits on your original unemployment insurance claim.

VA Lost Wages Assistance (LWA) Payment Details and Schedule

In addition to the above enhanced benefits, you may be eligible for Lost Wage Assistance (LWA) if you are out of work due to COVID-19. If your weekly benefit payment is at least $100, and you were eligible for unemployment benefits, you may receive an additional $300 in assistance retroactive through weeks ending August 1, 2020 to September 5th, 2020. You do not need to file a separate request/application for LWA; however, you may need to self-certify to confirm that you are unemployed or partially unemployed because of COVID-19.

Applicants only need to self-certify that they are unemployed/partially unemployed due to disruptions caused by COVID-19. If they don’t self-certify by 10/15/20 they may not be eligible to receive any of the $300 due to FEMA funding limitations. See more details on the VA LWA page.

Because of VEC programming/IT issues, the LWA payment will be made after October 15th, well after the funding approval from FEMA (Sep 12th). So most likely the payment to VA residents eligible for this payment will be for the full amount they are eligible for (up to $1800) during the covered period.

Initial Claims: If this is the first time that you are filing an unemployment claim under any of the federal or state programs available, you must first file an initial unemployment insurance claim to determine your eligibility and which programs may apply to you.

If you are eligible for regular unemployment benefits, you will receive a Monetary Determination Letter and PIN, typically within 7 to 10 business days of filing your initial claim. Your Monetary Determination letter lets you know what financial benefits you may possibly be eligible for; however, this may change based on the weekly claims you submit (addressed under Existing Claimants below).

If you receive a Monetary Determination letter stating that you are ineligible for regular unemployment benefits, you will then be directed via a phone call or text message to apply for PUA here.

Existing Claimants:  Claimants receiving unemployment benefits due to the coronavirus pandemic must continue to certify every week to receive unemployment benefits under any state or federal program. This includes the additional FPUC $600/week benefit and the PUA program.

The extra $600/week compensation is retroactive to the week beginning on March 29 and ends on July 31. FPUC payments are automatically added to the weekly benefit payment.

Upon exhausting regular unemployment benefits, you must file a separate application to receive PEUC benefits.

Claimants that have exhausted both regular unemployment and PEUC benefits may be eligible for an additional 6 to 13 weeks of unemployment benefits under the Extended Benefits program. A separate application is required.

Filing an Initial Claim (Post-Pandemic)

You must file your initial unemployment claim through the VEC Virginia Workforce Development online or via their call center. You will need the following information to file your first claim.

  • Social Security Number
  • Personal mailing address and contact information
  • Employment history for the past 18 months, including:
    • Employers’ business names
    • The physical address for each employer
    • Telephone number
    • First and the last date that you worked for each employer
    • The reason you are no longer employed
  • Alien Registration number and the date your work authorization expires if you are not a US citizen
  • The name and local number of the union hall (if you obtain work through a union)

To be eligible for Unemployment Insurance benefits in Virginia, you must meet the following eligibility requirements during the pandemic:

  • Unemployed or had a reduction in hours due to no fault of your own
  • Earned enough wages to be eligible for unemployment benefits

Filing Weekly Claims

You must file a weekly claim to prove that you are still eligible and qualify for unemployment benefits.  Your weekly claim cannot be filed until the end of the workweek, which is Saturday at midnight. You have up to 28 days after the end of each week that you are unemployed to file this weekly claim. Weekly claims can be filed online or over the phone.

If you don’t file your weekly claim within the required time, you will not be paid unemployment benefits for this week. You must call the VEC for assistance.

Existing claimants that are eligible for regular unemployment log in here to file their weekly claims.

To find out your claim’s status, call the Voice Response System at 800-897-5630, and choose “Claims and Benefits.”

If there is a problem with your claim that must be resolved before benefits can be paid or you have appealed a denial in benefits, you must still file a weekly claim online or over the phone. If it is determined that you are eligible or if you win your appeal, you will be paid these benefits retroactively. However, if you win the appeal but have not claimed benefits, you will not be paid for these weeks.

I filed my unemployment claim several weeks ago. Will I receive back pay once my claim is approved?

Over the past few months, the VEC has improved its telephone response and claim processing time. However, the large volume of unemployment claims will result in continued delays. If you are eligible to receive benefits but have not heard anything back yet, you will receive retroactive benefit payments up to the date that you were determined eligible as long as you filed your claims each week.

This also applies to the FPUC $600 per week additional benefit, which expired on July 31. If you have filed an unemployment claim before that date and are still awaiting a response regarding your eligibility for unemployment, you will receive retroactive payments for the back weeks of FPUC. This is the case even if the decision is not made until after the July 31 expiration date.

If you are not eligible for regular unemployment, you may collect benefits under the PUA program.  To determine eligibility, you must file a new unemployment insurance claim if you have not already done so. Once your eligibility is determined, you may complete a separate PUA application. You should continue to file weekly certifications during this process. If you are eligible for PUA benefits for weeks that have already passed, you may recover back pay if you submitted weekly certifications.

Can I still collect unemployment benefits if my hours have been reduced?

Individuals who work reduced hours may still be eligible to collect partial unemployment benefits if your gross earnings are less than the weekly benefit amount. You must continue to file your weekly certification and report any of your wages in the week they were earned, not received. Wages earned may reduce your unemployment benefit.

  1. Has anyone who has used Gov2Go successfully filed for 1/2//20 & 1/9/20 and received their payment along with the extra $300? The system allowed me over a week ago to file for 1/2 but so far no payment or extra $300. Only thing that happened on the site is that it generated a confirmation# but it has NOT given me a place to file for week ending 1/9/20. Not sure why stupid VA made it so we have to file on that site. Previously using their re-certification early each Sunday I never had problems filing and received my payments. Sigh . . . I may have to bite the bullet and call the VEC and wait however long. This is just dumb and frustrating how incompetent this state handles all this and the Governor goes on tweeting about things that are not on people’s list of priorities. Ugh. Any magical telephone number to get through on VEC or just the usual number? Thanks everyone.

    • I was able to file through GOV2GO for 1/2 on Friday the 8th and filed on 1/10 f 2 for 1/9. Received my 2 weeks and boost for 2 weeks yesterday. I’m on PEUC and had not exhausted before they stopped on 12/26

      • Teressa, very helpful. Does your automated account balance say it has a balance? Or does it say zero dollars available. My account still says zero dollars and no details available. My regular UI benefits expired 12/26. I completed a PEUC application on 12/29 and have confirmation of this. I was able to file claims for weeks ending 1/2 and 1/9 on Gov2go. VEC website (the January 13, 2pm update) says that new PEUC beneifits programming was supposed to have been implimented on 1/8. My first payment should have been yesterday, 1/13 for weeks ending 1/2 and 1/9. However, when one calls the 800-897-5630, there is a quick message that says benefits payments may be delayed up to 2 days. Anyone have any information on this?

        • I do have a balance but according to my balance I only have 7 weeks left. It seems as if my weeks just picked back up from where it left off of. If they are supposed to add 11 weeks, my balance should reflect 18 weeks. I’m not sure what is going on with that because I can’t get ahold of anyone on the phone. I don’t want it to get to the last week and I’m scrambling with no money. Regarding the recorded message about the two day delay. That is old. Its been up there for awhile.

        • Per the VEC, PUA claimants with active balances should start getting payments from 1/15 and the $300 FPUC (assuming system updates are done 1/14). PEUC (with active claims after 1/27), Regular UI and State EB recipients should be able to get the extended benefits now.

For those who had exhausted balances prior to 12/27/20, they will have to wait until after 01/29/21 to file their weekly benefits claim and get the extended benefits and $300 FPUC payment.

Article has been updated to reflect this.

    • Hi…I always called in for my weekly claims every Monday…ALWAYS! I have NEVER used the gov2go app nor website…its pretty retarded! When you call, 866-832-2363…select 1 for English…select 1 for PUA claims and then again select 1 to file your weekly claim for PUA…in that specific manner[1,1,1], you will be prompted to enter your social security number…verify the information by pressing 1…and you will be then connected to a live rep who will assist you in filing your claim by asking you the questions and provide a confirmation number before the end of the call…thats it! Call every monday…best time to call is between 8:15 -11am. If it say busy..try again a few times and you will be good to go. I have filed but still waiting payment for weeks ending in 12/26, 1/02 and 1/09 because VEC is reprogramming their software today 1/14 inorder to implement the new relief package for PUA specifically…therefore hopefully payment will hit retroactive either by tomorrow…or next week. Mind you Monday is MLK their office is closed…so this will cause another slight delay!

        • How do I find where it was account balance? Mine doesn’t show or say anything. My dashboard is pain and only shows weeks I need to file no other information is giving. Not how much I was approved for how much I have gotten nothing. There is no timeline and nothing under events and I was paid before just a couple hundred before end of year bc they mailed my tax form. Which was how I knew I got money. It only shows me when I need to file. I can’t find NOTHING AND NEVER GOT MY LETTER WITH MY PIN SO I CANT CALL to check status on the phone. I filed in November.

  2. I filed my 2 claims this past weekend. Saturday is for Jan 2 and Sunday for Jan 9. I called the 800 number to check the status. It says not process due to outstanding issue. Did I receive this message because it is too early to call or because I am denied benefit. I was receiving benefits prior to extension. Is there any other message we can hear by phone?

    • Terry the system wouldn’t let me file for my January 2nd PEUC claim. I could only file for my most recent week which was last week. Does this mean I’ll get paid for two weeks since my last payment was around December 29th or only 1 week? I did get in contact with a VEC representative and they said that payments will not be made or at least another week or two. At the time I couldn’t ask her whether or not my claim was accepted since it takes one business day to show up in the system.

      • Hello Jeremy. The very first time I file for unemployment, I made a mistake by filing the “initial filing” for 3 weeks instead of following up with weekly filing. For 3 weeks and every week, I am receiving benefit letter from VEC. I am waiting for nothing during those times. I called VEC about my mistake and they fixed it and paid my benefit for 3 weeks. More likely you will get your January 2 week payment hence you called them already. Can you do me a favor. Call VEC to check your status and see if you will get the same virtual message response. Let me know please so I dont bother taking action yet. Thank you.

        • Terry, so I did get paid today and it looks as though it was for my PEUC (1WEEK) and the extra $300 which was added from the CARES ACT (Those extra benefits expire in March). However, I didn’t get paid for the week of January 2nd. I had a feeling this would happen since the system would only let me file for the previous week. I called the toll free number and it says I have no available weeks to file. The automated system was also wrong when it said the amount my check was issued for. I would ignore the automated system until they update the system. The best thing to do would be to try to get a hold of someone at VEC so that they can help you with your account. I’m glad they were able to fix your mistake. Hopefully you get paid today or tomorrow if you filed this past Sunday. I made a list of the local numbers (see my post below) so hopefully they will return my voicemail. Generally they call within 24 to 48 hours so hopefully they can answer any questions we may have. Hope I’ve answered your question and please don’t hesitate to ask me if you have anymore questions that I might be able to help you with.

      • I’m on PEUC and I received payment for 1/2 and 1/9 as well as the Boost payment for the last 2 weeks today.

        • Hru so are u with chime ? And do u live in the Central area of Virginia? Cause im with chime and haven’t received nothing?

      • I still haven’t. Usually it says pending by now and have nothing. My account balance is still at 0 also. It let me file for the 2nd and 9th. When I call to check the status of my claim it says something about it not having information on it. But it won’t let me file anymore week either

  4. I applied for unemployment benefits September 2020. To date, the only communication that I have received is a monetary determination which did not include a decision.

I have not received any information regarding next steps, adjudication or the appeal process. I have contacted the VEC via phone and virtual communications and have received zero information. Last week, I learned that claims awaiting adjudication would be processed by December 15th, however, I still have not received payment. Through a professional contact, I learned that my claim appears to be eligible for processing, however, no one can identify why payment has not been released.

I understand the number of claims that deputies are now responsible for, however, this has turned into an extremely lengthy process that has definitely caused a financial hardship for my family.

Shouldn’t this claim have been processed with the others that were released by December 15th?

This is the same email that was sent to William Walton at the Virginia Employment Commission several days ago and I have still not received a response nor have I been able to reach an agent through the VEC virtual chat.

        • I went by there (Roanoke) today and the security guard gave me the paper that has the website address to make the appointment. However when I click on what I’m supposed to it tells me there are no available times and doesn’t tell me another way to make one. I’m thinking he said that to schedule the appointments it opens up at 10 AM. So I’m gonna try getting on the website at 10 AM to see if I can make the appointment. You could maybe try that too.

  5. I want everyone to know that I was able to file on Jan 9 for extension. I just want someone who can confirm that the filing is very short. It’s just few yes and no questions. Then in my Messages, I received a confirmation number. Does anyone have the same experience?

    • I don’t know what you mean by “extension” but if you mean filing for weekly benefits, that is the normal questions they ask. I was able to file early this morning on the GOV2GO site. The questions they asked were the same they asked when we filed on the VEC wite.

      • Based on what Teressa posted I too went to the Gov2Go site and went through the process of re-certifying (I think that is what she meant by extension) for week ending 1-2-2021 which up to earlier yesterday the system said I had exhausted my benefits (which is not true). These are all glitches and thankfully I was able to go through the process very similar to what we were asked on the VEC site. So RUN, do NOT walk to do your re-certifications as at any moment the site may begin to have glitches again. Hope everyone gets in!

I know that they said the program should be up and running by the 8th but apparently they are still down. I haven’t received anything since the end of December and I’m a single dad with two young boys. I cannot file on the gov2go app either. Sad….

      • I was able to file PEUC today for the week ending 1/2/2021. Maybe they are having glitches again. Try every once in a while this weekend and perhaps you will get it completed. Otherwise my only advice will be to call early Monday morning to the VEC and see what is going on with your claim. What is happening when you try to apply on Gov2go?

        • Thanks, I also noticed that they changed the date of peuc implemention. Rather than saying the implemention date will be the 8th it says it will be between the 8th and the 14th. At least payments are retroactive and hopefully everyone got their stimulus to hold them over until you were able to get your payments. God bless everyone!

    • Hi Terry how exactly did you file for the extension was it via phone speaking to someone if so how did you get a hold of them or did you do it via the app and was there anything required to file for the extension itself..? Any information will be extremely helpful, thank you!

    • I called the customer service 866 number this past Monday Jan the 4th and was able to successfully claim my PUA for the week ending in Jan 2nd. They gave me a confirmation number however I am still awaiting for payments. I think calling and filing is better than Gov2go!

      • Lots of us were able to file week ending Jan 2 but havent paid but that is okay because we get the retro later because it is filed. The issue is the week after Jan 2 because we cant even file it. If we dont file for this week by tomorrow Saturday, this week is gone. VEC should at least allow us to file for this week because the instruction is file every week to get retro for each week. We cant even get a response from VEC in this site to clear things up.

I recently switched to the VA debit card service, eventhough I got payment on it I thought that was the issue…but thank you for your help!

    • No and now we have to wait even longer because Virginia is so slow people in North Carolina started receiving the additional $300 this week and didn’t have to go through all the extra like if people dnt produce documentation by a certain amount of time that wil not get pd on the Gov2Go website u have to submit ur w2 a letter or recent paystub and it’s ridiculous because some places closed completely down due to covid and people can’t get copies of paystubs and who knows how long it wil be to get w2’s

      • Yes the W-2 has to be done prior to recertification. It is unfortunate that some do not have their W-2’s, sorry about that. I do believe the W-2 portion only needs to be done 1x thankfully but it is silly since we had already done that for the VEC. So much inefficiency its astounding and the Governor of VA just ignores the debacle that is unemployment at the time and instead tweets about nonsense. Stay strong everyone. Just a few more weeks and we may be getting an extra 1400.00 soon.

        • Did anyone else make their claim from last week today? On Saturday wonder when those funds will be available looking for guidance?

        • It usually takes at least 2 business days for them to process and sometimes the payment is there the next day after that. If they are being slowed down by glitches we may not see payment for that till Friday or early next week. Hang on to any verification #’s and confirmation numbers in case you have to call the VEC down the line.

  8. To Whom It May Concern,
First, I’d like to apologize for posting this for first time in wrong spot. This is theomplete 2nd time i am posting this topic.
For weekly filing in GOV2GO, when do we choose the option “Mark as complete” and “Mark as incomplete? I am concern about the beginning of week of Dec 27. I was able to file on that week. Do i choose Mark As Complete? And in general, do we mark it complete every week? Thank you.

    Reply
    • Terry, each Sunday you can file for your previous unemployed weeks. Once you file your “weekly claim” then you can mark it “complete” and then do the same thing next Sunday. Yes, mark complete for December 27th. Mine says “incomplete” until the system let’s me file my PEUC. Just keep trying to file. The system will say that you do not have any available weeks to file but don’t let that worry you. The VEC rep said that once the system is up and running by the 14th you will be able to file for your previous weeks and get paid retroactively. Hope this helps…

You should call the number to verify if your balance is $0. If you have exhausted PEUC then I believe you have to file for EB if that is still available.

        • Terry, Did they give you a website to log onto? I couldn’t understand the entire website. I replayed it but it was garbled. Thanks with any help.

I had certified every week never stopped same questions asked….Now how long do I wait? does this mean that I am now going to get my checks again? How long till you pay me? Am I getting a one week check or all of the past weeks I had to attest to for PUA? The system is so confusing and all the acronyms I have no idea anymore what I should be doing. It is getting a little hard when you’re wondering each week, day by day how you are going to survive….Has anyone did the self attest questions and how long did it take for you to get paid from there. The only problem is that they gave me the full amount and did not take the 10% for taxes I had been getting taken out for regular UI. I will just have to set aside money so there is no big surprise.

    • I filed for Pua back in June and qualified all the way from March till July and only received two payments and nobody will do anything. They all insisted I had to give my gross amount but I am self-employed and I even had an argument with the local VEC office in my area and they said the same thing and because they insisted I had to give my gross amount I didn’t get but two weeks worth of Pua up until July 25th and that was it and I was supposed to get 13 weeks and even though I have faxed them the information and contacted the woman who takes the complaint through the VEC they still haven’t done anything and I seriously doubt they will I know a lot of people that haven’t received anything and they were working regular jobs they weren’t even self-employed and still didn’t get there Pua even though they qualified my neighbor got one payment back in April and that was it most of the money is probably going to people that don’t need it

  27. Back on the hamster wheel. My UI got paid for its remaining balance this week so I applied for PEUC. I hope it starts soon as I already exhausted my 1800 for bills. The weekly amount is more for everyday things like groceries and gas money. I am feeling dejected since I am applying for jobs and either I don’t hear from them and my application goes in the round filing cabinet or I get a reply but its nope, we went with another candidate. Ugh, when am I ever going to be the “other candidate”. I really want to get back to work. This long “vacation” is not good for my morale and sense of order. Thanks for listening. I know many of you are in similar situations.

    • I am so sorry to hear about what your are going thru. I too am unemployed and steady looking for employment. I had several interview but because of the holidays everything seems to be put on the back burner, which doesn’t help me out because I am NOT receiving any compensation. It’s hard getting thru VEC system to speak anyone. But in the mean while I living off hope and a prayer. Trying calling you House of Representative

  29. So after 73 phone calls in the past 2 days only one person was somewhat able to assist me. So I self certified on the 25th of August after receiving a text message stating that I need to certify before the 30th to receive LWA, then it got pushed back to the 15th for final date of self certifying. I was just told that because I certified on the 25th I do not qualify for the full $1,800 and only $300 for the one week that I began the LWA self certification. And that anyone else who applied afterwards up to the 15th shouldn’t be getting the full payment unless they self certified back on August 1st. I do not know how accurate this is but the representative simply said I cannot receive anymore because I didn’t self certify on the 1st of August.

  30. Same with my hubs. No online chat, no emails answered, no phone contact, It is a cluster and still no LWA yet people have gotten it. I wonder if they really know what is going on? This is poorly run mess.

  31. I haven’t received any Lwa funds and it’s an endless maze trying to contact someone on the phone, I’ve been on ui since March, very little to no email or letters, this is nerve wrecking!!

      • No I haven’t received anything you because I answered those questions wrong and accidentally submitted it so I dont think I’m getting anything

        • You should try and call them and ask to have your response updated/changed. If funding still remains, and you are eligible, you will get a retroactive lump sum back payment. Will need some patience to get through to someone, but for $1800 its worth it.

    • I am still waiting. I’m currently receiving unemployment benefits but no LWA payment yet. Attempting to speak to someone can be frustrating because the wait time is long then when a person does answer they give you the run around about LWA. No one knows details.

  34. Help, Can you tell me more on the LWA. It says they pay for 6 weeks (300.00 each week) from Aug 1st I assume through Sept 9th 6 weeks. What about payments after Sept 9th, will they be automatic or do I have to reapply? Thanks

    • No more payments from Sep 9th. The program was only funded (via FEMA) for 6 weeks across all states. Unless Congress passes an extension, no more additional UI benefits.

  35. Hi there! I was very surprised that I received mine. In my Gov2Go app, on my timeline, it said that I had to uphold a copy of my W-2 within 10 days. Well I did not do that because I couldn’t find it anywhere! I assumed that I was NOT going to receiving it. So just for fun I called to check. And Dang, what a surprise I got!! I received the entire $1800. I currently receive $158 a week which qualifies me. Now remember, I still haven’t self certified or anything. I received the $1800 on Monday sometime. I normally receive my regular weekly amount in Tuesday at midnight…..so basically Wednesday. Should I expect possibly to receive the $300 plus the regular $158 for a total of $458 on that date then?? Sorry for the very long essay that I have written here LOL, I am just trying to get my affairs in order too as my car broke down with a broken clutch cable or something by so I need to get it towed as soon as I can. Does anyone have any info on this. Thank you guys in advance if anyone happens to know the answers to that!!!!

    • Pua people don’t have to do anything because you certify every week so you already qualify for what ever program they have

    • I got the same amount that you do ma’am 158 a week and I also got the 1800 but my payments didn’t go up. I’m wondering why myself?? Can anyone help us out?? I’ve tried calling the number entered my ssn and my pin and it says that I’m not in the system.. wtf is really going on here??

    • I am in the same situation. I did not receive my 1800 until a week later than everyone else. I was fortunate to get someone on the phone to assist me. I previously was provided a confirmation that all was good, only to find out they blamed in on the fiber optic cable. They cannot provide a date to receive the other past 6 weeks (1800), and said the additional 300 should be starting the week of October 26, 2020. I am not sure what to beleive. My finances are a mess. Then today I received another letter stated my EB has to be reapplied even thought I have a confirmation all is good! Everything is a mess!

    • I am wondering the same thing. I know the PUA people have received theirs but I don’t know anyone that is receiving regular unemployment that has received any of the LWA money. Little backward you would think the people who actually who qualified for traditional unemployment would have received their money. I talked to someone several weeks ago and was told looked like I should received at least 3 weeks and I still haven’t seen anything, Crazy you can’t get answers from anyone.

  37. I filed for my Pua back in June 2nd. I filed all my claims after I received my monetary determination, I filed for like one and a half months because by this time it was already July and had not received anything because the gov to go website lost all of my information and the VEC had no info on my filing even though I had a confirmation number so we had to do it over the phone. Well to make things worse I still didn’t receive anything and the representatives kept telling me I had to turn in my gross amount. I am self-employed and work 7 hours a week but make more than my base amount which was around 158.00. So I did some research because I was not receiving my checks and I was supposed to receive the base amount + 600 dollars, and found out on the VEC website that I am supposed to turn in my net amount because we have to pay so much in taxes and when I contacted the Harrisonburg Virginia Workforce Office the management said that I had to turn in my gross amount regardless and I had to send them pictures from the VEC showing otherwise so they gave me a fax number and I contacted the VEC directly off of their website and the woman that supposed to handle complaints and they have yet to do anything about it. Now at least I was working but my biggest concern is people like me who didn’t know any better and should have been receiving their Pua and have children and bills to pay more than I do we’re getting screwed because the VEC did not train their people properly and they don’t even read their own rules and they haven’t done anything to fix it but I’m sure they’re giving a lot of money to people who are not supposed to even get it I was screwed out 11 weeks of Pua because of the screwed up system and I’m sure they have the money to fix it but they refuse to do it. I have a neighbor who was out of work because of covid-19. He works up on a Skyline Drive and hasn’t worked since like February and he received one Check in April and didn’t g. back to work until September so tell me what is wrong with the VEC and why they are ripping people off that need to pay bills and those who don’t even qualify for it are getting all the money

    • I agree. I too am still waiting. Hopefully it will be here later today or the next. I just know here in my state I had to apply under the LWA in the gov2go portal.

    • Hmmm that is odd and bad. Did you earn at least $100 for all the other weeks? I would give them a call and I know no one wants to be on the line forever but that is your quickest route. Other than that you can give it one more week to see if you receive the rest. Personally I would call if you know you should be getting the full amount. I hope you get this resolved quickly. We are all on a tight rubberband of nerves.

      • Hi, yes so I have been getting it regularly for the past 3 months now and beforehand when I tried to get a hold of someone in VEC I was never given the option to hold on the line I’ve tried every number and option available but all it ever does is say they are experiencing a large amount call volume and to call back later and hangs up on me… I spam called for about 4 hrs one day just to speak with someone and got nothing ever, I even emailed and did not get a response from anyone… do you happen to know if there is a specific way I can reach someone ?

        • 1-866-832-2363
This is the number that I was able to speak to a representative on. It’s not the same number that I call when I file weekly

        • Call 866-832-2363 option 1 then option 9 to speak to a representative. I’ve spoken to a rep every time I call.

      • I called at 8:12 in the morning on Thursday and was able to speak to somebody. There wasn’t a wait either. So try calling first thing when they open and you should have a better chance of being able to reach a representative. Now I will warn you, the representative was not very nice. However, it is their job to help you and you have a right to address your concerns. I hope this helps. I know this is a tough time for everybody.

        • Thank you both Erin and Tammy ! I seriously appreciate the help and I’m going give it a shot first thing in the morning so I can try and resolve this situation. I’ll definitely keep you all updated to see if anything happens and I’m really hoping for some kind of answer.

        • So after trying to be put on hold I still can’t even get the pleasure of waiting to speak to someone… it’s only just machine after machine and I need to speak to someone to figure out what’s wrong, I’ve tried virtually every option on the call hoping to be put through to a representative but it just repeats information or hangs up… I don’t know what to do anymore.

        • I wanted to see if I could help you and I just now called the number and was able to get through to someone.
          Option 3
          Option 1
          Option 9
That is the order of options that I used. Now it took two or three tries because sometimes after I chose all the options it would ring and go silent. But after the second or third try a live person came on the line and I didn’t have to wait. I made these calls consistently so just keep calling it until somebody comes on the line. I would suggest calling ASAP because I’m sure as the day goes on the busier the phone line gets. I hope this helps. I’m sorry you’re having to deal with this aggravation.

  40. This is true I haven’t receive my last weekly benefits as well. I did receive 1500.00 on Monday for the refund, which I’m wondering did they take the tax out. I’m just confused on the way the payments was issued out. Like do you still receive your weekly payments?

  42. I received the $1800. However, two issues:
    1. The $1800 did not have any taxes taken out. Is this a mistake?
    2. I did not receive my weekly UI benefit of $378

Is there an issue with the weekly payment as well?

    • – VA should be taking out taxes but they did not take taxes out of FPUC (at least for me) like they do for my regular unemployment. I have put aside 10% just in case so I don’t get a surprise come Tax Day.
      – As for your UI isn’t it a bit early for that? I normally get paid Tue or Wed since they take about 1 business day after you submit the re-certification. I did get last weeks but will see if this week I get my regular UI.

      Reply
    • Thanks for the heads up on the taxes. As far as the UI, I am referring to last weeks benefit. I never received it. I did the usual certification. I thought since last week it would have arrived on Thursday because of the holiday. However, you add the technical problems to it and that resulted in a 2 business day delay. That would have put me at today for last weeks’ benefit, but nothing was there today…

      • I would say call VEC. Yes I know a huge pain. I have not had issues receiving my regular UI. Checked at this weeks was taken out and will be posted tomorrow. I have 1 more week left of regular UI and then the $ runs out. I will be applying for PEUC once that last payment hits my bank since it won’t let me do it early. Too much to ask I guess that I get on the queue before the money runs out. Too much red tape and nonsense. But if all goes well I will at least qualify for UI till the end of the year, which I hope not to be collecting till then if I can help it.

      • I haven’t received last week’s UI payment either. Ater nearly a week of unsuccessful attempts at speaking to a live rep, I decided to just go to my local office. I was told that even though we were informed the checks were processed on October 14, they actually weren’t. They have now been processed and they should be received no later than Monday, October 26.

        • Cathy, no, just UI for the week ending October 10.

I found this posted on vec.virginia.gov:
“VEC is processing payments under the Lost Wages Assistance (LWA) program. If you are eligible, you will receive your payment in 1-3 business days.  Please allow at least 3 business days before contacting the VEC with questions about your payment.  Thank you.”

    • As far as I understand the deadline to certify for LWA was 9/30/20. May have changed given all the issues they had but I have not seen anything. Best thing is to call them.
