Editorial Standards: How I Research and Fact-Check

I’ve run Saving to Invest since 2008. Most people who land here are trying to answer a money question that affects them this month: when a refund or benefit payment will arrive, whether they qualify for a credit or program, or what a new limit or raise means for their paycheck. Getting those numbers right matters, so this page explains how I research, check and update what you read here.

Where the numbers come from

Dollar amounts, limits, dates and rules come from the agency that sets them, checked on the day I write or update a post. The main ones are:

  • Taxes and refunds: the IRS (irs.gov, Revenue Procedures, IRS notices and forms instructions)
  • Social Security, SSI and SSDI: the Social Security Administration (ssa.gov)
  • SNAP, WIC and school meals: the USDA Food and Nutrition Service, plus each state’s own agency
  • Unemployment: the U.S. Department of Labor and each state’s labor department
  • Federal and military pay: OPM, DFAS and the Defense Department
  • Medicare and Medicaid: CMS and medicare.gov

When a figure isn’t official yet (for example, a proposed pay raise or a projected contribution limit), I label it as projected or proposed and say what it’s based on. Once the official number is out, I update the post and say it’s confirmed.

How posts are updated

Many posts here cover numbers that change every year, like tax brackets, COLA amounts, contribution limits and payment calendars. I update a post when a fact in it changes: a new official figure, a rule change, a new date, or a broken source link. I don’t change dates on a post just to make it look fresh. The “Last Updated” date at the top of each post shows the last time its content was actually revised.

Corrections

If you spot a number or date that looks wrong, please tell me through the contact page or in the comments. I check it against the official source and fix it as soon as I can confirm it.
