Key Takeaways
- VA pays each month's compensation on the first business day of the next month.
- If the 1st is a weekend or holiday, VA pays the last business day before instead.
- No VA deposit is dated in January, May or August 2027; April, July and December get two.
- The 2027 COLA first shows up in the December 31, 2026 deposit, not in January.
VA disability compensation for any given month is paid on the first business day of the following month. When the 1st lands on a weekend or federal holiday, VA pays on the last business day of the month before instead.
That rule is simple, but in 2027 it creates an uneven year. Three payments arrive a day or two early at the end of a month, which leaves January, May and August 2027 with no deposit dated inside them at all. Here’s every date, and how to keep that from wrecking a monthly budget.
2027 VA Disability Payment Schedule
| Payment for | Deposit date |
|---|---|
| December 2026 | Thu, Dec 31, 2026 (early) |
| January 2027 | Mon, Feb 1, 2027 |
| February 2027 | Mon, Mar 1, 2027 |
| March 2027 | Thu, Apr 1, 2027 |
| April 2027 | Fri, Apr 30, 2027 (early) |
| May 2027 | Tue, Jun 1, 2027 |
| June 2027 | Thu, Jul 1, 2027 |
| July 2027 | Fri, Jul 30, 2027 (early) |
| August 2027 | Wed, Sep 1, 2027 |
| September 2027 | Fri, Oct 1, 2027 |
| October 2027 | Mon, Nov 1, 2027 |
| November 2027 | Wed, Dec 1, 2027 |
| December 2027 | Thu, Dec 30, 2027 (early) |
Two of those early dates are holiday-driven rather than weekend-driven. January 1, 2027 is New Year’s Day, which pulls the December 2026 payment back to Thursday, December 31, 2026.
The December 2027 payment is the odd one. January 1, 2028 is a Saturday, so the holiday is observed on Friday, December 31, and VA pays the business day before that: Thursday, December 30. At least one widely read 2026–27 calendar lists the December 2026 payment on January 1, 2027, which is a federal holiday, so double-check any schedule that shows a payment on a day banks are closed.
The Months With Two Deposits, and the Months With None
Because the early payments land at the end of the month, the calendar-month count comes out uneven:
- Two deposits: April 2027 (Apr 1 and Apr 30), July 2027 (Jul 1 and Jul 30) and December 2027 (Dec 1 and Dec 30).
- No deposit: January 2027, May 2027 and August 2027.
Nothing is missing. The second deposit in April is simply May’s money arriving early.
This is where budgets break. Say Tom, a veteran rated at 70%, gets his April payment on Friday, April 30 and treats it like a bonus.
His next deposit isn’t until June 1, so everything due in May has to come out of that April 30 money. I’d move it to a separate savings bucket the day it lands, or at least mark it as “May” in whatever budget app you use.
When the 2027 COLA Shows Up
VA compensation gets the same cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) as Social Security, and it takes effect December 1, 2026. The December payment carries it, and since that payment lands December 31, 2026, that’s your first deposit at the 2027 rates.
The official COLA is announced October 14, 2026. Current estimates put it around 3.5%, which would lift a 100% rating for a veteran alone from $3,938.58 to roughly $4,076 a month. The rest of the rating table is in my VA disability rates by rating post, and I track the COLA estimate itself in my 2027 Social Security COLA post.

If You Also Get Social Security or Military Retired Pay
A lot of veterans juggle two or three federal deposits, and they don’t all follow the same calendar.
Social Security retirement and SSDI pay on the second, third or fourth Wednesday depending on your birth date, or on the 3rd for people who started before May 1997. That schedule is in my Social Security payment dates by birth date post. SSI follows almost the same rule as VA: paid on the 1st, moved earlier when the 1st isn’t a business day.
Military retired pay also lands on the 1st, or the last business day before, so for most months it arrives the same day as VA compensation. My 2027 military pay dates post has that full calendar, plus the survivor annuity dates, which shift the other direction.
Common Issues to Watch Out For
- Back pay doesn’t follow this calendar. A retroactive award after a claim or appeal decision comes as its own separate deposit after the decision, not with your regular payment on the 1st.
- A new rating may not show up right away. If an increase is approved close to the 1st, your next regular deposit can still be at the old rate, with the difference paid later as back pay. Check your decision letter for the effective date.
- Direct Express users should watch for card changes. The program is moving to a new bank. I cover what changes and what to do in my Direct Express card transition post.
- Shutdown headlines don’t apply the same way. Congress funds VA compensation a year in advance, which is why payments kept going through the fall 2025 shutdown.
- Your bank can post early, but shouldn’t post late. Some banks release government deposits a day before the official date. If a deposit hasn’t arrived after a couple of business days, I’d check with your bank first, then call VA at 800-827-1000.
Looking Ahead: 2028 Outlook
The payment rule won’t change in 2028, so the calendar is predictable. The December 2027 payment already lands early, on December 30, 2027, which means January 2028 is another month with no deposit dated inside it.
The number to watch is the 2028 COLA, which will be announced in October 2027 based on inflation from July through September 2027. The official current rates are on VA’s compensation rates page. I’ll update this page with the confirmed 2027 COLA in October and the full 2028 schedule once the new year’s holidays are set.
