When Will The $300 Extra Weekly Unemployment Start Being Paid in My State? News and Updates on Payment With PUA and PEUC Claims

[2022 Update] The $300 supplementary payment made in 2020 and 2021, ended in all states on September 6th, 2021 (some states ended it earlier).

Unless claims are in the adjudication process, At this stage all retroactive payments (including those for PUA and PEUC) have also been processed and no new payments are being made.

An extension of unemployment benefits, including the $300 payment, is not likely for 2022 and beyond unless economic conditions deteriorate significantly. I will post updates as they come to light.

____________

The latest (ARPA) stimulus package was passed by Congress and signed into law by the President Biden on March 11th, 2021. It includes further extensions to pandemic unemployment programs (PUA and PEUC) and an extra $300 weekly FPUC supplementary UI payment. The latest supplementary $300 payment will be paid over 25 weeks starting from week of March 15th, 2021 to September 6th, 2021. This is in addition to the previous extension covering 11 weeks from December 27th, 2020 to March 14th, 2021. Eligible payments will be made retroactively in cases where state unemployment agencies face delays with rolling out system updates to process these payments.

The $300 weekly unemployment payment will be made above and beyond any regular state or enhanced federal unemployment payment and require eligible claimants to certify regularly according to their state UI agency guidelines. Claimants will need to be eligible for at least $1 of an underlying unemployment benefit to receive the $300 supplemental payment under the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) program.

You do not need to take any additional action to receive this supplemental payment. States are slowly rolling out these payments for different groups of claimants starting with those already getting regular UI and state extended benefits (active claimants). Those who have exhausted benefits prior to the extensions being rolled out or new claimants will only be able to get payments once their underlying claim is approved.

I will update dates in the table below as states implement these guidelines and start making making actual payments. Please leave a comment if you find updated or incorrect information reflected in the table and I will review/update accordingly. Details on why this payment could be delayed due to PEUC or PUA roll-outs are discussed in this video.

State unemployment departments and agencies will be responsible for disbursing these benefit payments, similar to the $300 LWA and earlier $600 FPUC supplementary unemployment programs. Given the many challenges and various payment issues across states with earlier supplementary UI benefit programs, I expect this to take some time to be rolled out and require retroactive payments to get claimants caught up. So stay tuned and subscribe to get the latest updates. You can also see this $300 FPUC video for more details on this program.

Lost Wages Assistance (LWA) program – Now Expired

The temporary $300 unemployment benefit under the Lost Wages Assistance (LWA) program funding has now been paid in all states who participated in the program. The program expiry date was December 27th, 2020 and this means that any new or retroactive payments under this program will NO longer be paid out going forward. This has been replaced by the new $300 FPUC payment discussed above.

This supplementary payment was a temporary, but much needed benefit for unemployed or underemployed workers who lost the supplementary $600 FPUC weekly payment at the end of July. There was a lot of confusion on when the $300 would actually be paid by state UI agencies which led to the creation of the LWA state tracker table below, which shows the payment status and actual or estimated future date claimants can expect their first weekly unemployment payment, if eligible. You can also see the 1000+ comments from readers that share their experiences around the LWA payment, including some very useful tips if you are facing issues getting your $300 LWA payment.

All states that applied and were approved by FEMA were only initially awarded three weeks of funding – covering the weeks of August 1st, 8th and August 15th.  After that, states and territories will need to submit a Lost Wages Additional Week Request one week at a time for funding to pay claims for subsequent weeks. However any additional funding is subject to the $44 billion budget that is available for this program and it is almost certain that funding will run out before the December 27th expiry of this program, unless Congress approves additional funding via a formal UI benefits extension.

In fact, at this stage approved states will only get a maximum of 6 weeks of funding (weeks covering August 1st to September 5th) for the LWA program per recent FEMA guidance to state labor and unemployment agencies that have already made several weeks of payments. Several states which started making the $300 payments earlier than other states have already been notified that their LWA funding allotment has run out and no additional funding beyond will be approved. Note however that some states like Florida will only be applying for and paying 4 weeks of LWA benefits, since they didn’t meet some of the LWA program qualification rules (details here).

Payment Start date is when the state actually started processing LWA payments OR is the estimated date of the first payment processing based on available information. Note: Due to bank processing delays, it can take 2 to 4 days after the noted dates for benefits to hit your bank account or debit card. Please see links to more information in the table or your state UI website for specific payment status. If you find any mistakes or have updates, please leave a comment below and I will update table to help others.

What if my state has started making payments, but I don’t see my $300?

Claimants in most states do not need to take any action to receive the new benefits available in this program. The additional benefits will be added automatically for all claimants who are eligible and have certified for the relevant week. Their self-certification will ask them to confirm they were unemployed or partially unemployed due to COVID-19. See more FAQs on this here.

However if your state has started making payments and you haven’t received payments you need to first confirm you are eligible. This means you must be receiving at least $100 in weekly unemployment benefit payments (pre tax and before any other deductions). This includes claimants receiving any type of regular unemployment insurance benefits as well as those receiving PUA and PEUC benefits.

If you are eligible and you have not received a payment in several weeks then you will need to contact your state UI agency to ensure the claim has been processed and is not being held up due to fraud, missing/incorrect payment details or due to a weekly or bi-weekly certification issue.

See more in this article on Why Your $300 Unemployment Has Not Been Paid or Delayed.

My state has been approved and the LWA tracker says payments are being made, but when will I get my payment?

The tracker provides an actual or estimated date for the when the LWA payments start being processed by the state. If a start date has been officially published by the state, you will see the status updated to “paying now.” Otherwise it is estimate based on FEMA guidelines or if confirmed by several sources online. However this date (week start date in many cases) may not be the same as the date the actual UI payment will hit your back account or debit card. The actual date you may see the money could be several days after the official state processing start date and tied to your normal UI payment cycle. You will need to confirm via your UI online portal or state agency for the exact payment date.

Also note the payment date is generally the date when payment starts. In many states, due to volume of people being paid, claims are paid out over several days (in batches, based on SSN or First/Last Name). And given processing by banks to disburse these payments via direct deposit or debit cards can take 1 to 2 days, it may take several days after the first payment date for you to receive your payment.

I got my $900 back payment but no payments after that. Why?

The first state LWA grant approved by FEMA was only for three weeks. Hence the $900 payment (3 x $300) is what most people are seeing first, less any taxes or withholding. Subsequent $300 payments are approved and paid on a week by week basis. This includes retroactive payments which will also be staggered. Rest assured if you are eligible for past weeks you will get your payment.

Also the maximum number of weeks that can be paid under the LWA program is 6, which means the maximum payment in most states is $1800 (or $2400 if the state was paying $400 p/week). After the payment of 6 weeks, you will revert to what you were getting under existing unemployment programs.

I am got my first week of payments but not subsequent weeks.

Kristin asked, “My son just got his first payment for the weeks of 08/23 thru 08/29 and 08/30 thru 09/05. He got the extra $300 for the week of 08/23 – 08/29, but did not get the extra $300 for the week of 08/30 thru 09/05. We are in Texas. Do you know why he got it the first week, but not the second week?

Every week is processed separately by the state UI agency subject to FEMA funding. So you may be seeing some variability due to delays in approval, claim processing and eventual bank/debit card payment.

  2. It is really disappointing that Ohio was the first state to step up and agree to the lwa program, yet, we have still received nothing. They haven’t even bothered to put out any type of official update. No information to the thousands of people who are deciding if they can afford to eat this week. People are going to start panicking. I am one of those people. Our government is broken. It shouldn’t be about politics right now. People are suffering. Not just Republicans, not just Democrats. PEOPLE!! Why can’t we agree on helping the people? And would it kill you guys to update the unemployment website for the thousands of PEOPLE that are waiting, desperate for any information to be found? Or here’s a thought, Governor Dewine,
I challenge you to live on my single mother unemployment payment of $239 a week (pre-tax) and pay rent, utilities, and buy food for yourself and two teenagers.
I bet by the end of the week you would make things move a lot faster. I also bet that you would run to tell Congress to reinstate the $600 unemployment supplement because it is impossible to live. People are suffering while you sit in luxury.

    • Jaime, Thank you for your remarks. Right on. This is what we really need to say to politicians of all types who live in their own world. We need to contact our reps and senators and let them know what is happening and how we feel. They only know to take recess and go to their homes at our expense. What exactly are we paying them to do?

  3. Hi Andy. I talked to a customer service agent in Ohio today. They’re paying the 6 weeks over the course of 6 days ( might be a little longer because of the weekend. ) This starts with the 1st week which ended 8/1 being paid tomorrow. I checked mine and I do indeed have a $300 deposit set for tomorrow. Good luck to my fellow Ohioans! Hint: scroll down to your 8/1 payday. It will show there not at the top of the columns.

    • Jason, did you speak with someone from Ohio job and family services or pua? I am on regular unemployment and receive over the $100 marker. I don’t see anything about the $300 scheduled to deposit on my paystub history for the week of 8/1.

      • Hey! Hope I am being of some help to at. Least someone. I spoke with an agent who was very knowledgeable. I’m on PUA. Earlier today I saw 8/1 set for direct deposit. I checked back later and 8/8 is set for deposit the following day 9/17. Go to payment history and scroll down to 8/1. It should have $300 posted and set for direct deposit. Hope this helps!

        • I’m from Ohio I have no information on the BWC website about the LWA. After seeing all the Ohio post about receiving money I call Ohio JFS waited for over an hour on hold only to be told by there agent that she was unaware of any LWA payments going out that we have more information on the LWA reading information on websites like this one we are on than she has , so she was no help at all. So I still no no more now than I did on Monday when everyone started posting from Ohio that they were getting LWA back pay. I draw the max $480 per week and certify every Sunday I received my regular weekly payment but to date I have no information on how to receive or certify for the LWA.

    • Were you on regular unemployment or on the expanded pandemic unemployment assistance program? I see the $300 scheduled for me tomorrow and I was on the expanded PUA program, but my husband is on regular unemployment and I don’t see the $300 going to him tomorrow

      • I just looked at mine, as I am on regular unemployment in ohio and mine isn’t showing anything either. My husband also gets regular unemployment and his isn’t showing anything either.

      • Was his claim originally due to COVID? Only people whom claims were originally due to COVID will receive the LWA. If not, look on the website for the qualifying reasons for PUA. If he can use any of those reasons update his claim status. If there was a deadline, file an appeal (fax it) and submit an email on there website (use the claims form..click other and type a message explaining circumstances).

  6. I’m in Ohio, on regular unemployment. My friend who is on pua her website says the 300 will be deposited soon. On the regular unemployment website for me it doesn’t show anything about a 300$ payment. Does that mean I’m not getting it? My regular unemployment benefits is 250$ a week. So I meet the requirements. I’m confused and can’t get through to anyone at the unemployment office

    • They are processing and paying in batches so some people are getting paid first. Will likely take most of this week to clear the backlog. Hang in there.

      Reply
      • Are the batches just the “weekly” $300 or the retroactive lump sum? My weekly self certification never asks about Covid however when I initially applied I did give them the specific Covid layoff number which I no longer even remember the details about- sad. I have one weekly benefit amount remaining, what happens after next week is dispersed? I’m scared to death to call in case something gets screwed up!

        • Hey Kate! See Jason’s comment above. (That’s me) It looks like we’re finally getting there!

    • Yes…its based on the pre-tax, pre-deduction WBA amount. So you should the $300. Check with your state agency UI portal for confirmation of payment.

  7. Andy,
Can you answer this question for me please?
I have been waiting for my LWA since the 7th when California started paying out and I haven’t received any money yet. However! EDD sent me a Self Certification Form in my Inbox this morning for me to fill out. For me to fill out if my unemployment was due to the pandemic. I filled it out so does this mean that I will get the $300 now? If so, do you know when.
This question is for anyone that can possibly answer it for me.

    Reply
    • I had to update my status claim in order to get LWA. My original claim wasn’t due to COVID. They sent me a correspondence and said if I was now still unemployable due COVID I needed to update my claim by 9/8. I was able to update my claim online under claims (Update Claim) beneath weekly requests. it was as simple as checking the box certifying I am now affected by the pandemic. I updated on 9/7 and received 300 on 9/9, 600 on 9/10, 300 on 9/11 and 300 today. Hope this helps.

      • Yes Niecey this helps me to understand a lot better. I just checked my inbox and I had a message stating that EDD has received my Self Certification Form yesterday. Do you live in California? I just wanted a little insight on approx.: how long I still have to wait. I don’t mean to be a bother but times are really hard right now.

I truly feel like the fed govt has told reporters not to question the efficiency or validity. If you watch any press conference with any gov. There’s no voluntary mention. Reporters question are obscure and hardly answered. Never more info offered by leadership. It’s clear we are their subjects.

I got on around 11pm on
9-14 just to check and I have one $300 payment showing for 8-01-20 being paid on

    • Hi Crystal I also live in Ohio and you definitely speak for me. you cannot find and recent news articles or any info letting us know what’s going on with the LWA. There were states that were approved after Ohio and has already exhausted there 6 wks worth of payments, it really makes you sick when you read these stories. Good luck and hanging there we will get it sometime soon I hope.

      • Hi guys I’m from Ohio as well and what you said could have come out of my mouth Ohio is disgraceful and their lack of communication to let us know where things are I can’t find anything from the bigwigs at odjfs at first it said 9/13 then it said 9/21 it’s like they don’t realize they are playing with peoples lives here it’s the worst state in the union!

    • I understand your frustration Pa. here Our officials aren’t doing much to ease the anxiety of the people. It really is a big issue for alot of people in different states. All I get when I search is the same article from the press releases last week stating that yes they have the funding and it goes on to say people will start seeing their payments as early as Monday the 14th ,however on our L&I page its had a completely different statement,.that people will receive their payment a week after they file their weekly or biweekly claims ? And when you find a article that mentions the LAW payment it directs you to our Government website/ UC link which only has the initial information and eligibility requirements no updates on payments Oh they did however update the page a few days ago to let us know that after the 5th of Sept there would be no more payments .they made sure they made that update but can’t update any other information, the little information I have comes from outside sources which is unacceptable. I understand we are in trying times and they are overwhelmed, hire more people if need be there are plenty of people who need a job right now.I look at it this way, the government is responsible for most of us being home due to their mandates and forced closures ,they owe it to the people to keep us informed on s timely basis as to when we can expect to be paid estimated times does not provide groceries or let me know when I can get some groceries.

  23. Ohio never gives any updates it’s ridiculous we need that money and they are taking their time if they had to live on 189 a week I bet this would be already done

    • In WV-I just got my regular benefit but no extra $400. I think the way I’m thinking that it applies to this week. Meaning when you do your weekly claim for this week on Sunday it may be on next one…? The information isn’t quite clear on that.

  24. Andy,
I am from Utah and they’ve began making payments for the LWA to individuals who qaulify. I have yet to get mine do to the computer systems not catching that I was unemployed as a direct result due to Covid. Thankfully after speaking with a claim rep that has been fixed do I should recieve the $900 back pay for 8/1, 8/9, 8/15 within 2 days. My question is if you might know if Utah going to receive any additional weeks. I have seen so many different answers on internet from different news cycles and my rep said to her knowledge was only receiving 3 weeks of payments. Just curious as to why some states like Texas have received or receiving all 6 weeks and other states only supposedly receiving the first origanal 3 weeks. I seen a chart that stated Utah paid 3 weeks, Unpaid 3 weeks yet a red “N” next to that which meant funding depleted. Don’t remember which site I seen that on though. Any and all info you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

    • So states have to apply for every week after the initial 3 week grant. FEMA has confirmed they have allocated 3 extra weeks (for a total) to every state at this stage. The additional 3 weeks may take some time to process, but you should get them paid before month end. See this article (official source from UT gov agency) – https://jobs.utah.gov/covid19/lostwagefaq.pdf

  25. Has anyone got any updates for Ohio?
For the past few weeks…LWA Tracker indicated payments beginning 9/13.
    It now says 9/21?
    In desperate need!

    • Phi – Sadly a vacuum of information from OH. Since no one from OH has confirmed payment recieved I moved it out and honestly I am hearing end of September in some chat rooms. Hopefully once the LWA certification step pops in your UI portal that will mean payment is imminent.

    • Hi Phi! I’m in OH too. Isn’t Ohio a disgrace? They have the 700 million for us but what the hell are they doing? The official day now is 9/21. I hope they actually start earlier. Wishful thinking I know. At least we’re getting 6 weeks back pay not 3! Per the FEMA website all states are now getting 6 weeks not 3. Have a great day!

    • The Delaware DOL has confirmed payments started from this week, so expect them to start hitting back accounts from Sep 15th onwards for eligible claimants.

The Delaware Department of Labor expects to begin issuing LWA payments to eligible claimants beginning the week of September 14, 2020, on a first-come, first-served basis. The LWA payments will be retroactive to the week ending on August 1, 2020.Benefits will be automatically calculated and distributed based on unemployment claims received; individuals do not need to call or apply separately for this.

You may get paid next week if nothing comes by the end of this week. But should be sooner rather than later.

  27. I’m from Arkansas and received lwa payment of 300 today, I thought it was retroactive from the August 1st? I see some people say it will be staggered payments? Does anybody know when the reminder will come? And did it go from 3 weeks to 6 weeks of guaranteed retroactive payments?

    • From what I’ve been seeing on social media sites (following threads and such), some states (I live in Illinois) are releasing these funds based on SSN. I’ve found NOTHING officially online to confirm this, but that’s what I’m seeing on social media threads on this topic. Maybe reach out to any other folks you know and find out if they’ve received theirs. Compare the first 3 of your SSN’s.

      • Illinois here: I received my 900.00 (3 weeks) minus taxes last week. It wasn’t on my normal day of weekly benefits. So today is my normal deposit and it is only my regular unemployment benefits. I was really expecting the other 3 weeks to be included in this payment. How disappointing. I see now by reading and reading up on this that each state will have to apply weekly for the additional 3 weeks. So if it gets approved I’m assuming we’ll see 300.00 deposited each week they are approved for. So back to checking our accounts everyday to see if we can pay the car payment or the electric bill. This is an insane. After the initial statement that we will receive 400.00 additional each week until the end of the year, this is very disappointing. People actually thought they could make the bills, now we’re back to hoping for an additional measly 300.00 for the additional 3 weeks of the supplement here and there, that probably won’t come in the end.
My last name begins with B, if that helps with figuring out when your initial 900.00 will come.
