When Will The $300 Extra Weekly Unemployment Start Being Paid in My State? News and Updates on Payment With PUA and PEUC Claims

[2022 Update] The $300 supplementary payment made in 2020 and 2021, ended in all states on September 6th, 2021 (some states ended it earlier).

Unless claims are in the adjudication process, At this stage all retroactive payments (including those for PUA and PEUC) have also been processed and no new payments are being made.

An extension of unemployment benefits, including the $300 payment, is not likely for 2022 and beyond unless economic conditions deteriorate significantly. I will post updates as they come to light.

____________

The latest (ARPA) stimulus package was passed by Congress and signed into law by the President Biden on March 11th, 2021. It includes further extensions to pandemic unemployment programs (PUA and PEUC) and an extra $300 weekly FPUC supplementary UI payment. The latest supplementary $300 payment will be paid over 25 weeks starting from week of March 15th, 2021 to September 6th, 2021. This is in addition to the previous extension covering 11 weeks from December 27th, 2020 to March 14th, 2021. Eligible payments will be made retroactively in cases where state unemployment agencies face delays with rolling out system updates to process these payments.

The $300 weekly unemployment payment will be made above and beyond any regular state or enhanced federal unemployment payment and require eligible claimants to certify regularly according to their state UI agency guidelines. Claimants will need to be eligible for at least $1 of an underlying unemployment benefit to receive the $300 supplemental payment under the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) program.

You do not need to take any additional action to receive this supplemental payment. States are slowly rolling out these payments for different groups of claimants starting with those already getting regular UI and state extended benefits (active claimants). Those who have exhausted benefits prior to the extensions being rolled out or new claimants will only be able to get payments once their underlying claim is approved.

I will update dates in the table below as states implement these guidelines and start making making actual payments. Please leave a comment if you find updated or incorrect information reflected in the table and I will review/update accordingly. Details on why this payment could be delayed due to PEUC or PUA roll-outs are discussed in this video.

State unemployment departments and agencies will be responsible for disbursing these benefit payments, similar to the $300 LWA and earlier $600 FPUC supplementary unemployment programs. Given the many challenges and various payment issues across states with earlier supplementary UI benefit programs, I expect this to take some time to be rolled out and require retroactive payments to get claimants caught up. So stay tuned and subscribe to get the latest updates. You can also see this $300 FPUC video for more details on this program.

Lost Wages Assistance (LWA) program – Now Expired

The temporary $300 unemployment benefit under the Lost Wages Assistance (LWA) program funding has now been paid in all states who participated in the program. The program expiry date was December 27th, 2020 and this means that any new or retroactive payments under this program will NO longer be paid out going forward. This has been replaced by the new $300 FPUC payment discussed above.

This supplementary payment was a temporary, but much needed benefit for unemployed or underemployed workers who lost the supplementary $600 FPUC weekly payment at the end of July. There was a lot of confusion on when the $300 would actually be paid by state UI agencies which led to the creation of the LWA state tracker table below, which shows the payment status and actual or estimated future date claimants can expect their first weekly unemployment payment, if eligible. You can also see the 1000+ comments from readers that share their experiences around the LWA payment, including some very useful tips if you are facing issues getting your $300 LWA payment.

All states that applied and were approved by FEMA were only initially awarded three weeks of funding – covering the weeks of August 1st, 8th and August 15th.  After that, states and territories will need to submit a Lost Wages Additional Week Request one week at a time for funding to pay claims for subsequent weeks. However any additional funding is subject to the $44 billion budget that is available for this program and it is almost certain that funding will run out before the December 27th expiry of this program, unless Congress approves additional funding via a formal UI benefits extension.

In fact, at this stage approved states will only get a maximum of 6 weeks of funding (weeks covering August 1st to September 5th) for the LWA program per recent FEMA guidance to state labor and unemployment agencies that have already made several weeks of payments. Several states which started making the $300 payments earlier than other states have already been notified that their LWA funding allotment has run out and no additional funding beyond will be approved. Note however that some states like Florida will only be applying for and paying 4 weeks of LWA benefits, since they didn’t meet some of the LWA program qualification rules (details here).

Payment Start date is when the state actually started processing LWA payments OR is the estimated date of the first payment processing based on available information. Note: Due to bank processing delays, it can take 2 to 4 days after the noted dates for benefits to hit your bank account or debit card. Please see links to more information in the table or your state UI website for specific payment status. If you find any mistakes or have updates, please leave a comment below and I will update table to help others.

What if my state has started making payments, but I don’t see my $300?

Claimants in most states do not need to take any action to receive the new benefits available in this program. The additional benefits will be added automatically for all claimants who are eligible and have certified for the relevant week. Their self-certification will ask them to confirm they were unemployed or partially unemployed due to COVID-19. See more FAQs on this here.

However if your state has started making payments and you haven’t received payments you need to first confirm you are eligible. This means you must be receiving at least $100 in weekly unemployment benefit payments (pre tax and before any other deductions). This includes claimants receiving any type of regular unemployment insurance benefits as well as those receiving PUA and PEUC benefits.

If you are eligible and you have not received a payment in several weeks then you will need to contact your state UI agency to ensure the claim has been processed and is not being held up due to fraud, missing/incorrect payment details or due to a weekly or bi-weekly certification issue.

See more in this article on Why Your $300 Unemployment Has Not Been Paid or Delayed.

My state has been approved and the LWA tracker says payments are being made, but when will I get my payment?

The tracker provides an actual or estimated date for the when the LWA payments start being processed by the state. If a start date has been officially published by the state, you will see the status updated to “paying now.” Otherwise it is estimate based on FEMA guidelines or if confirmed by several sources online. However this date (week start date in many cases) may not be the same as the date the actual UI payment will hit your back account or debit card. The actual date you may see the money could be several days after the official state processing start date and tied to your normal UI payment cycle. You will need to confirm via your UI online portal or state agency for the exact payment date.

Also note the payment date is generally the date when payment starts. In many states, due to volume of people being paid, claims are paid out over several days (in batches, based on SSN or First/Last Name). And given processing by banks to disburse these payments via direct deposit or debit cards can take 1 to 2 days, it may take several days after the first payment date for you to receive your payment.

I got my $900 back payment but no payments after that. Why?

The first state LWA grant approved by FEMA was only for three weeks. Hence the $900 payment (3 x $300) is what most people are seeing first, less any taxes or withholding. Subsequent $300 payments are approved and paid on a week by week basis. This includes retroactive payments which will also be staggered. Rest assured if you are eligible for past weeks you will get your payment.

Also the maximum number of weeks that can be paid under the LWA program is 6, which means the maximum payment in most states is $1800 (or $2400 if the state was paying $400 p/week). After the payment of 6 weeks, you will revert to what you were getting under existing unemployment programs.

I am got my first week of payments but not subsequent weeks.

Kristin asked, “My son just got his first payment for the weeks of 08/23 thru 08/29 and 08/30 thru 09/05. He got the extra $300 for the week of 08/23 – 08/29, but did not get the extra $300 for the week of 08/30 thru 09/05. We are in Texas. Do you know why he got it the first week, but not the second week?

Every week is processed separately by the state UI agency subject to FEMA funding. So you may be seeing some variability due to delays in approval, claim processing and eventual bank/debit card payment.

  1. As I assumed, Alaska didn’t issue LWA payments so far this week. My PUEC usually is deposited on Tues afternoon, and the additional funding was not there. Furthermore, when checking the UI Website for payment details it only shows that I was approved for my normal benefit amount. No other information is available on the state sites, nor any press releases from the Governor, Commissioner, etc. There is very little information on the rollout for Alaska LWA on the web. There is a statement on the UI site instructing to “NOT CALL” the call center regarding the LWA. I wouldn’t hold your breath on this one- Halloween is still weeks out.

That and the President just called all Republicans to abandon Stimulus negotiations until ‘after he is re-elected’. Regardless of who takes the WH, Congress, etc- there is one thing: The financial help is going to come too late– we will simply have to find work at Walmart/HomeDepot/Grocery stores- they win here; cheap labor and an abundance of applicants. I’m a Chef by trade and I probably won’t be finding a $60k cooking job anytime soon, unless I leave AK. It’s too bad I can only find work making the same pay rate as a 19 year old with no cooking experience. The disparities are endless.

Do to unemployment lack of concern my power has been interrupted and I’m going to have to park my car do to uninsured and unpaid insurance. This shouldn’t be happening and it’s like they don’t care. They started paying LWA September 25 and I’m still waiting

      • This whole thing has been BS since the beginning.. promises, lies, dates changed etc… “The American people”. That’s a nice catchy slogan. Also BS.
Our Alaskan governor gave us 1/2 our 2020 dividend, promising to give us another portion in the fall. All lies. So where is our other 1/2? We are entitled to it.. why would they not give it to us? Dunleavy never gave a thought to seasonal workers who are laid off in the winter rely on their dividend. Now They have nothing coming in for winter at the exact same time extended benefits are exhausting, living in a rural town, no jobs to be had. NOW WHAT? DUNLEAVY? I bet his pockets are nicely lined after shuffling the dollars around… and Alaska still has not received the 300 added to our unemployment. Holding back on paying it and then changing the dates. First it was retro pay.. we’ll be lucky to see any retro. Dunleavy has done nothing that he promised Alaskans. They are all crooked. Im 56 years old , born and raised here in Alaska, Yeah I’m defensive with good reason, Dunleavy isn’t even from Alaska. Marrying a native does not make him Alaskan. He has no roots here. He’s just a hired crook breaking the law, interfering with the rules and laws written into the Alaska constitution regarding our PFD. Knowone is stopping them so all of them keep screwing us!
We are the one having to live with hardship, so why isn’t the Alaskan people allowed to vote on what we have to live with? Because it’s really not about us now is it?

  4. A: No. Since Washington s minimum weekly benefit amount is higher than the $100 required by LWA, this is not a concern for Washington claimants. As long as you are eligible to receive at least $1 in benefits, you can receive LWA. For example, if you receive less than $100 each week because money is being deducted from your weekly benefit payment, you will still be eligible for the entire $300. A: We estimate that the LWA could provide more than $400 million to families, individuals and our state s economy. Any additional funds to help unemployed workers are welcome.

  6. The Kansas Department of Labor says Kansans who are eligible for the Lost Wages Assistance program can expect payments from October 6th or 7th. The department began accepting self-certifications and processing payments on Friday (October 2nd) so could take a few business days to hit bank accounts.

Payments will be made weekly (over 6 weeks) rather than in a lump sum even though they are technically retroactive. KDOL, the state UI agency, has said that this is so claimants can start getting payments as quickly and accurately as possible the program was developed to work this way.

Gov. Kelly said to be eligible, a claimant must self certify their unemployment or partial unemployment is due to disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. She said if KDOL confirms eligibility, the claimant will get the payment for each week of the LWA program, as long as the person remains eligible and funds remain available. According to Gov. Kelly, claimants are able to self certify by logging into their unemployment benefits account or by calling one of the unemployment contact center phone numbers listed on its website.

        • Exactly the same case for me!
I received one (1) payment of the extra 300.00. I need the money desperately and have been so disappointed!
I heard that the reason that quite a few people only received 1 of the 6 $300
00 payments or those who haven’t received any of the 300.00 is that once again the State of Kansas DOL accidentally sent out all 6 of the 300.00 payments to a lot of people drawing unemployment, and because they made such a huge mistake, they ran themselves out of money early on.
Huge mistake!! I have contacted Kansas Dept of Labor 3 times after establishing my initial report. I have called them all day long in the past, since I heard about them mismanaging the “lost wages” and sending all 6 payments to a ton of us unemployment recipients. I have contacted 3 different people working for kansas employment about whether or not they had heard the same rumors. These phone calls from me ranges from Oct.through Dec. The Kansas Unemployment workers that I talked with, all 3 said they were expedlting a form to the supervisor. They took down a lot of info from me to send the supervisors!!
I am so disappointed!!! We all need the the money!
          Has anyone else heard this?

      • I have filed, but Also not received lwa yet. My portal says verified, just wondering when payment will come, as it’s been too long!

        Reply
      • Im still ridiculously waiting and im totally confused to what is taking so long to get these out to people. On top of that when you attempt to call KDOL now, you can’t get ahold of absolutely anyone because the system is going directly to the “sorry all associates are busy and the line is full” recording.

        • [Update Nov 6th] Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development is announcing issuance of the Lost Wages Assistance benefit beginning Nov. 6, 2020.

          Source : https://labor.alaska.gov/news/2020/news20-39.htm

[Update Oct 31] Cathy Munoz, deputy commissioner of the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, said on Oct 27th that the state is working to get the payments out and that they can now be made in a lump sum of up to $1,800 instead of individual payments distributed over six weeks. If this is the case, should start hitting bank accounts in early November.

Reasons for Delay : Consequently, U.S. DOL is requiring that the State of Alaska not comingle FEMA funding with UI Trust Funds. This requires a new IT coding for accounting and reporting. The current UI system is not designed for funds to be dispersed from any sources other than UI. FEMA funding is unique requiring an entire system to be built with separate accounting and financial reporting requirements. Reimbursement is not allowed. The state cannot pay from UI Funds and request reimbursement. UI is in the final stages of testing EFT payments.

Retroactive lump sum payments will be made rather than the normal weekly benefit.

Thanks all. It does appear that Alaska dates have changed from what was published and no LWA payments have yet been made. According to the Alaska free press, Mid-October is now the target date. Definitely well behind other states.

According to Cathy Munoz, deputy commissioner of the Alaska Department of Labor, “The program isn’t expected to start processing payments until mid-October.”

          Table updated accordingly.

The payments are for eligible people from July 31 to Sept 5 for retroactive payments of LWA. No money yet, but a date has been given. Thanks for keeping this website going.

I’m hoping maybe you can give me a straight honest answer. I’m in SC & they paid all but one payment. When I talked to them several times they keep saying it’s cause I switched from regular UI to the pandemic one on the week of the Aug 1st. They get it straight but didn’t. So yesterday when I called the woman told me well they have nothing to do with the payments & I need to call FEMA since the payments come from them. Ok WHAT? Sounds like the run around of not knowing your job. If this is true how & who do I contact cause after 5 calls they are starting this crap.
    Thanks

    • Yes SC paid first week by check (for fraud prevention supposedly). You may need to certify for LWA since you switched unemployment programs, but this is a one time certification issue only. I have heard though and see in other comments that PUA and LWA payments have been messed up (so you are not alone there) in SC. But FEMA cannot help you and your state UI needs to sort that out. You should contact someone else there or talk to your local state or district representative (google it) to get help. Also did you confirm you were eligible for LWA? You need to be getting over $100 from the existing unemployment programs you qualified for.

It does suck seeing that the time table changed to mid October. But keep in mind its just an estimated GUESS. just like the one saying early October and the ine before that saying Sept 20th. Its not based on any actual facts..no update. If it was an actual date we would have seen articles and updatea on NJ UI portal. The portal is listing the SAME EXACT “update” thats been there for 3 or 4 weeks now. Its the update that actually had the time table change from sept 20 to early October. So maybe we will get $$ sooner. Like I said..the time table here is a guess. Not factual. Wish there was someone with some actual updates but NJ could care less. I hate not knowing and this governor is a joke. I sent email to his office yesterday. He obviously doesnt read any comments from Twitter so maybe everyone should email him and FEMA. Just over load both with constant emails.

My bills are behind and they are constantly saying they will send it, it’s being processed and still nothing til this day. I have given them everything they need and still nothing. I’ve also been told it would be direct deposit and called all my bill collectors just for it not to hit and now owe triple my bills.

  17. Any updates for NJ. Other than the vague “sometime in October” that NJDOal stated? Unbelievable NJ has waited so long to even attempt to start programming. Almost as if Murphy is hoping for 2nd stimulus to go thru and extended unemploment benefits will be included and he won’t need the LWA. After being hit so hard by COVID, NJ residents NEED whatever help we can get! Murphy is hurting NJ the longer he WAITS. Thats what he is doing…waiting. No way its take NJ almost 2 months to set up a program to issue LWA when other states have already DEPLETED the funds. Ridiculous!

Also she mentioned NOT everyone will get the $1800, that’s the max you can get. It can start as low as just a $300 payment . It all depends on your claim.

I was just wondering why articles kept popping up yesterday saying the federal government has approved $300 jobless benefits for NJ. Hasnt that already been approved?

    Reply
    • NJ was approved by FEMA several weeks ago. But they have yet to update their systems to make these payments to eligible claimants. Per NJ DOL update on Sep 24, “Additionally, the Department has been approved for six weeks of funding through FEMA’s Lost Wages Supplemental Assistance (LWA) program. The funding gives eligible claimants $300/week in addition to their other unemployment benefits for a limited time. Programming will be in place next month to distribute lump sum payments.”

        • Andrea and Tawanda – Due to the increase fraud many agencies are implementing additional verification steps. You need to call the MI UI agence and confirm your payment is not held up because of this, and assuming you are eligible for the payment as described in the article.

        • Brad from MI again. Good news. My certification questions just showed up for the LWA. Not sure when I’ll get the money though. Hopefully Monday

        • So I just looked again and it’s gone but I did it well over 6 times and where it shows you everything you submit there were multiples and now they are ALL gone as well as my alert to certify for the 28th as regularly scheduled. I qualified for the first three weeks of lwa and got nothing in NY, I work the first 2 weeks of September and reported it so I’m going to assume that because of me working for those two weeks in the beginning of September that it automatically disqualified me from any type of payment which I think is sooooo not fair. • South Carolina SC DEW Update (Sep 25th) – A DEW spokesperson said the agency began a “soft launch” of the program meaning some claimants saw LWA payments hit their bank/debit cards on Frday (most people are getting checks!). But this is only a small amount and it is expected to take several days to process the backlog of payments. Claimants should now be able to complete an identity verification process on DEW’s website. Once they certify that they were unemployed during the weeks they are requesting benefits for, and receive approval, they should start receiving payments within seven to 14 days, according to DEW spokesperson Heather Biance. The maximum payment is for 6 weeks or $1800..

Update Sep 28 – It looks like all South Carolina DEW is making LWA payouts via check due to fraud/identity issues with existing payments. They are mailing checks that appear to be dated 9/25, no definite day they were actually mailed. They have also taxed these FEDERAL PAYMENTS at 17% so the actual weekly payment is $249.00 (vs $300). Could take 7 to 14 days for all checks to reach your address on file with DEW.

Update Sep 30th – With South Carolina approved to provide LWA benefits for a total of six weeks, the DEW has said those who qualify will receive a one-time payment of $1,800. Those checks have started going out this week, but the confusion continues as claimants complain that they haven’t been able to correctly submit their paperwork online to receive payment.

        Reply
        • So I guess the “Soft launch’ of people didn’t need to get their identity verified??. South Carolina do the most..smh

        • So are there going to updating all weekend? B/c I don’t see anything in my portal as of yet

        • It’s is So said
          7- to
14 days. All this time other states as all ready paid . It’s really said when we have bills to pay
And no help soon like tomorrow it is already the end of Sept now.it is just really said and the on line is still saying in prossing what’s going on.

        • When are they going to start the extra $300 on our weekly funds we certify for starting Sept 27th

        • When I try to verify identity, it tells me access denied… why is that?… I am unable to certify also.

        • When are they going to start the extra $300 on our weekly funds we certify for starting Sept 27th

        • This the way South Carolina is handling LWA payouts. They are mailing checks that appear to be dated 9/25, no definite day they were actually mailed.
They have also taxed these FEDERAL PAYMENTS at 17% so the actual weekly payment is $249.00. If you try to call the unemployment line it takes you through a series of prompts eventually automatically disconnecting the call. It would be hard to believe there is a state that has screwed this up worse than South Carolina. I encourage everyone to Google who their congressman is and get on the phone to that office to notify them how this has and is being handled.

        • this is COMPLETE BULLSH*T!!!! how in the hell is this supposed to help and supposed to be “more money”? IF THE PRESIDENT SAID PAY US $300 ON TOP OF WHAT WE ALREADY GET, THEN DAMNIT WE SHOULD GET WHAT TRUMP SAID GIVE! I WAS EXPECTING TO GET MUCH MORE THAT $1620….. I OWE THAT IN PAST DUE RENT! SOUTH CAROLINA SUCKS!
