2024 IRS Tax Refund Schedule And Direct Deposit Payment Calendar

By all reports tax return processing and refund payments for the 2024 tax season are going much smoother thanks to IRS investments in technology and no new stimulus payments or tax credits to administer. However further security controls and PATH act restrictions (see below) could delay potential refund payments for some filers.

When Can I Expect My Tax Refund in 2024?

According to the IRS refunds will generally be paid within 21 days. This includes accepting, processing and disbursing approved refund payments via direct deposit or check. This is regular days, not business days.

This was the basis for the estimated 2024 IRS refund schedule/calendar shown below, which has been updated to reflect the Jan 29th, 2024 start date of IRS tax return processing this year.

The refund processing schedule is organized by IRS’ WMR/IRS2Go processing status‘. The listed dates are just week ending estimates and your refund could be paid anytime during the week based on your IRS cycle code (see more on that in sections below).

Further, as many tax filers have found out over the last few years, actual refund payment dates could be much longer if your return is pulled for mandated PATH, additional identity fraud/security checks, special handling or manual agency reviews.

The estimated IRS refund payment dates in the chart above should not be construed as official IRS payment dates. To get the exact date of your refund payment check the IRS’ Where is My Refund (WMR) site or your IRS transcript.

How to read the IRS refund processing schedule

The estimated refund payment dates in the table above are based on past years and IRS processing guidelines. It shows the date your refund will be processed and paid based on the week your return is accepted and refund is approved by the IRS.

The federal IRS refund processing schedule is only for electronically filed returns (e-file) done thorough online tax software providers and assumes your tax return was in order. I.e accepted by the IRS via the WMR tool and status is equal to “Return Received”.

Once your tax return is successfully processed by the IRS, it will go to the “Refund Approved” status, after which it goes to refund sent when the payment is disbursed by the IRS.

Paper filed returns can take considerably longer and could take 1 to 2 weeks longer than the direct deposit payment dates.

Average IRS Refund

Based on the latest statistics from the 2023 tax year the IRS processed over 160 million returns with the average refund payment being $3,089. This was 5% lower than the prior year.

Why Your Refund Payment Could be Delayed

There are many reasons your tax return processing could be delayed beyond what is shown in the standard schedule above. This includes submission errors, IRS reconciliation issues or security/fraud related issues.

This is why many filers are see the “Return Processing Has Been Delayed Beyond The Normal Timeframe (Tax Topic 152)” message during tax season.

Note that as in previous years, if you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) your refund may have been delayed beyond the standard processing times due to the PATH act provisions.

This is to allow for fraud and dependent verification on these dependent related tax credits. See sections below for more on the PATH act and refund release timeline.

For those experiencing ongoing issues or delays with their refunds check out this article on “Why is it taking so long to get my refund.”

IRS Test Batches – Early Refunds

A week or two prior to the IRS officially accepting and processing tax returns, they will often run several test batches with various major tax software providers to “test” and “verify” their systems are integrating externally and processing returns correctly.

This will result in WMR status updates for a small subset of tax payers picked in these early test batches, but refunds won’t be paid until after the official IRS processing date.

Note that early refunds paid as a result of test batch processing are not the same as those via refund advance loans.

When Should Taxpayers contact the IRS?

The IRS has said that phone and walk-in representatives can only research the status of your refund if it has been 21 days or more since you filed electronically, or more than 6 weeks since you mailed your paper return or if the IRS WMR tool directs you to contact them.

You can also see earlier updates from prior tax seasons and the thousands of comments below this article around dealing with delayed tax refund processing issues!

Help! My WMR status bar has disappeared

As many folks have commented, the WMR tracker status bar may disappear or not be shown if your return falls under IRS review after it is received (Status Bar 1: Return Received) because additional information is needed for your return.

This can happen even if you previously checked WMR and it showed the status as “Return Received.”  An explanation or instructions will be provided depending on the situation (e.g. PATH message or Tax Topic 152 as discussed below)

But don’t panic when this happens. The IRS still has your return but things are essentially on hold until the IRS gets the additional information from you to continue processing your return . You will either get directions on WMR or IRS2Go or the IRS will contact you by mail. See more in this video.

Follow the provided instructions and return any additional information ASAP to get your potential refund and reduce any further delays. Talk to your accountant, tax advocate or tax professional if you are not clear on what the IRS is asking for or you don’t get an update after 21 days.

PATH Act and Tax Topic 152

Two of the most common refund related messages showing up on the WMR tool after your tax return is submitted are the PATH message and to Refer to Tax Topic 152.

The PATH message on WMR/IRS2Go relates to the the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act (PATH Act of 2015) and is to notify you that the IRS is legally required to hold and further verify tax returns that include EITC or ACTC.

While the IRS can continue to process affected returns, they cannot issue refund payments until the PATH act lifts. This generally happens from mid-February. See more in this article on PATH act processing for the current tax season.

Path ACT Refund
PATH Refund Delays

The PATH message does not mean your tax return is done and your tax refund is approved. It simply means the IRS systems have identified you are claiming the (EITC) or the (ACTC) on your tax return, and so further processing and payments related to your refund are held up for the statutory hold period (3 weeks after the start of tax season).

Once the PATH restriction is lifted, the IRS will process these returns and pay refunds per the above schedule. You may see Tax code 570 with a Notice 971 code (IRS review adjustment) if your refund is adjusted for other reasons.

When you see the Refer to Tax Topic 152 message it means your refund is being processed and the IRS is directing you its generic refund page for more information. There is not much you can do but wait to see if the IRS finds any issues or requires further verification of your identity or items in your tax return.

A Tax Topic 151 message simply means that you’re getting a tax offset which may result in your refund being less than you expected. The reason for this is that the federal government has “offset” or deducted monies from your tax refund to cover debts you owe other federal agencies. See this article to get more details on why your refund was offset.

You will get an official notice letter/report explaining the actual offset and adjustments to your tax return, and details on how to appeal this action – but likely it will delay you getting your refund.

While not great news, the silver lining here is that the IRS has processed your return and your adjusted refund (where applicable) should be on its way. You will see code 846 on your transcript when the refund has been issued.

What is the IRS Cycle Code on my Transcript?

While the above IRS refund schedule can give you an estimated date for you refund once approved (WMR/IRS2Go status) by the IRS, it may take a while to get there.

So some folks use their IRS tax transcript (free from your IRS account) which shows various tax processing codes and a “cycle code.” This is an eight digit number that indicates when your tax return posted to the IRS Master File (IMF).

The cycle code is updated regularly and when combined with the tax topic code, can provide insight into your tax refund status, processing stages and potential direct deposit date. You can see a deeper discussion on IRS cycle codes in this article.

IRS Tax Transcript Cycle Code

If I can see current year processing details on my IRS tax transcript does it mean I am getting my refund soon?

This question comes up a lot and I have seen a few comments on this suggesting that that if you can see current tax season processing details on your (free) transcript then your refund is on the way. But this is not a factual statement.

The IRS is very clear that just being able to see processing details on your IRS transcript does not mean you will imminently be getting a refund and is among the common myths and misconceptions repeated in social media.

For the current tax season you transcript will update several times in line with your cycle code (discussed above) and IRS processing. The official IRS line is that checking the WMR or IRS2Go tool is the best and official way to check your refund status.

However I have read a number of comments here and on other tax sites saying that when WMR/IRS2Go provides limited information on the refund, your IRS transcript can be a good source to get more details. The is especially the case if your refund processing has been stuck for a while.

IRS system issues and refund delays

Every year the IRS has issues with processing returns in a timely manner and so a number of people see delays in getting their refunds or updates in the status of their refund on the WMR tool/app.

The IRS has said most system processing issues have now been resolved and new funding will be used to upgrade systems.

But given the various legacy systems in place and sheer volume of processing to be done, including prior season backlogs of paper and amended returns, I would not be surprised to see system issues arise again this year, which mean more delays in processing and paying refunds. See more around processing delays in this video.

Amended Tax Return Refund Schedule

While the IRS promises to have regular return refunds processed within 21 days for nine out of ten tax payers, it does take quite a bit longer to receive a refund if you amended your tax return.

Generally you will have to wait up to 16 weeks more for the IRS to process amended returns since they prioritize regular returns. Also note that the standard”Where’s my refund” service from the IRS does not track amended tax return status’. You need to instead use the IRS tool, “Where’s My Amended Return.”

You can also access the tool via phone by calling 1-866-464-2050.  Only call the IRS to follow up on delayed amended return refunds after 12 weeks. The number to call is 1-800-829-1040.

  1. I filed my amended tax back in March and all I see online is “we have no record”. When will this be processed and when should I expect my amended return ? I am seeing people waiting 6 months to a year for it. Does anyone have updates on this?

    • I sent two amended in march for separate years. And got this now after months of it saying it was processing. Your amended return was received on March 31, 2017. However, it has not been processed. We apologize for any inconvenience.

  2. My preparer e-filed on Feb.16 and it is now June 12 and still no refund. Got 1st letter that return was being reviewed dated March 1. Got 2nd letter w/identity theft form 14039 dated May 15 and my tax preparer faxed it to IRS stating we are not victims of identity theft. Very simple tax return, W-2 incomes +1099 SSA, standard deductions, form 1095 for insurance for both of us. Have been filing jointly now for 33 years with no problems.

  3. My taxes were accepted on April 3rd. I had to send “additional” information to them claiming I missed a signature and a form I did not have. After faxing these document pages to them the same day they were accepted. That was roughly April 6th. It is now June 9th and still being processed. What is going on? It appears I am not alone here, but what is the hold up? We need our refund!

  6. I filed and it was accepted Jan 28. I was requested to send ss cards and birth certificates for my children and I to verify identity middle of March. Still says my refund is being processed w/a code 152. I called several times and they say they need nothing else. I’ve also successfully ordered my transcripts and it all matches the original refund amounts. What gives????? This is absolutely absurd. If you were to owe the IRS money, they want it NOW! I want my money now!

  7. I filed in February, received a letter to call to verify my identity. That was a fail. Drove two hours to the closest irs service office to prove my identity and was told the bank account number didn’t match my return. After many questions back and forth he figured out the account number was for turbo tax and asked me if I still wanted to submit it! WMR says “has been received and processing “. Next I get an email from turbotax stating they would automatically withdraw payment for services. When I called turbotax I was told the withdrawal was declined maybe due to a wrong account number? Not much confidence in turbotax or irs. Good luck!

  8. We filed our taxes on 3/4 and we finally called them after it still states Processing on there website since then. They basically told us that we should have received a letter from them, but wouldn’t tell us what they are requested and why they are sending us a letter said it could take up to 2 months before we get our tax refund back. We have never had to wait this long and my husband told them if the shoe was on the other foot and we owed them money they would have charged us in interest! I dont think the people at the IRS knows what they are doing.

  10. I did my taxes late February. I filed electronically through Jackson Huit. I received my federal in less than 7 days and I am still waiting for state refund. The funny thing is I checked the state refund status online weeks ago and finally about 3 weeks ago it said my refund was being processed. I’ve been checking ever since and now it says it has not been processed yet?

  12. Filed 1/25/17 today’s date is 5/06/17 still no refund, received message code 9001 as well 152 I filed no eic nor the other, NO bars on WMR, still waiting. My hope is that a better system is put in place one that will allow you to track better their process, for me the frustration comes in the ‘not knowing’ the constant checking on WMR. stay hopeful, hopefully we will all get a DDD soon, though the frustration is REAL.

  16. I filed on January and got accepted on the WMR bar then a couple of days later was changed to “we have received your refund and it’s being processed”. By the first week of March I received a letter that I need to verify my identity, I called and verified my identity and was told that it could take up to 9 weeks to receive my return. Later I received another later stating that my tax return was on hold for further review and that the investigation would be completed by April 20 and that I should receive my return or another letter from IRS requesting more info. I called the IRS to see what was my status, the guy was not able to give me more information only that he would give my contact information to the department that was reviewing my return. I called again the next day to see if I could get any information through the automated voice system, and found out that on April 15 all credits were applied and the automated voice system gave me the expected amount of $ I’m expecting. I have been checking on IRS page but still says it’s being processed so I really hope I get my money this week or by far next week.

My husband passed on January 17th and we sent all the necessary forms to the IRS. I need my money badly. Today is the last day for the IRS to manually process without going thru another bunch of crap. Wouldn’t be doing this if I owed them money!!

We called that day and thwy said everything looked good and we should be getting out refund in 9 weeks, but that it usually doesn’t take longer than 5 weeks. Here it is May 1st and we still haven’t gotten our return. We are owed that money and this is getting ridiculous. 19. Filed March 9th. We had 2 sets of taxes to be done. The first was electronic and we saw the direct deposit in 8 days. The second had to be mailed in and H&R Block said 4-6 weeks. It’s has been just about 8 weeks now. I get that there can be delays but for those who have been waiting for longer than I have I can only imagine the irritation. Keep checking online once to twice a week and it still says processing. It feels like it’s going to be Christmas before we see that check. Although heaven forbid you owe them money and don’t get it within an expected time frame.

  20. This is crazy I filed on January 27th and whenever I try and find out all I get is the refund is still processing. I hope the IRS will be adding interest because if we miss paying our taxes we have a fee or a penalty. I have go nothing in the mail and I think this is crazy, if I owed money they would have already gave me my refund after the IRS got what was owed to them. So freaking annoying.

    • I had to pay H&R Block out of pocket because I still haven’t received our federal and they didn’t release the fee for H&R Block. Apparently you have 22days for them to paid and then they threaten you with collections.

I hate this waiting game and the general tax topics. I do have a number to speak to a live person and also whatever tax service you use, supposing you efiled, you can call them and they can look into it a little more deeply. Especially if you used h&r block. The IRS is just slow. But with millions and millions of people filing taxes you’d have to think it would go a little slow. My little girl turns 5 on Monday. It sure would be nice to be able to buy her gifts or give her a small party with her brother and sister. Don’t let me down IRS!

  31. E-Filed April 3. Can’t remember the date it was accepted…either the 4 or 5. Bars went away and says “Your tax return is still being processed. A refund date will be provided when available.” References Topic 152. I do have an offset, but I’m in Illinois and I still haven’t received my State refund!!!! I’ve had an offset in years past and even if I hadn’t of had it by now, I would at least have a status bar telling me about my refund date. I have nothing besides that message. Super irritated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • I e-filed on march 3,2017, after the website said accepted, I waited and waited. So i call after my 21 days and still no letter or nothing. i call and speak to an agent… She informs me that at the time i submitted my taxes their system malfunctioned, so therefore it has to be entered manually through their system. today is 4/28/2017 and i still have not received anything. no letter from them and no taxes.

    • 5/6/17 UPDATE: My status bar finally came back this morning and I have a refund date of 5/10. I did call the IRS on day 21 and spoke with a rep whom was helpful. At that time she told me because of the offset, it was being delayed, it was just delayed more this year than ever!!!! So as much as we all want our money, it does require a lot of patience. I would thoroughly suggest calling them if it’s been 21 days.

      • I filed my taxes February 1st 2019… Got a letter in March saying to get back to them 60days after which would be May 15th and nothing! It’s now June 19th and still have yet to receive my taxes. No letter no nothing! Can’t get ahold of anyone to talk to. It’s nothing but automotive. I keep checking on the irs site and it just says it’s processing! It’s so annoying!!!

  32. I filed on Jan 15th and it was accepted Jan 17th and still haven’t received mine or any letter. They said it was a system error but nothing is wrong with my taxes. So frustrating. Tomorrow will be the 8 additional weeks that I had to wait for it to be fixed on their end but it’s not looking like it

  35. I filed my taxed electronically the same way I do every year with direct deposit on February 22, 2017. Today is April 17, 2017 and still no update. The irs refund website says :

“We cannot provide any information about your refund. Be sure to
    verify your filing date.”

Not sure what this means but I also sent a paper copy to IRS by mail 2 weeks ago. Lets go Feds pay up already. If the ball was on the other end, we would be fined and imprisoned.

  40. Hello everyone! I am glad to see other people are having issues as well receiving their refund and not just me! I have filed by paper beginning of February and it doesn’t even come up in the system. I even mailed in my check for the small amount I owed to state. It’s really close to the dead line and I am getting worried I might get a letter. I don’t owe anything, but you never know with the government! I’ve tried calling 3 different phone numbers and they all say the same thing. I can’t talk to an actual person. Does anyone have any numbers where you can talk to a representative? Or should I re-mail my tax information in and send in a new check? I’ve made copies of my tax forms so I have proof I did my part and so I can re send them. Thanks for your help!

    • It doesn’t matter if you paid the State. State and federal are handled by different agencies. Federal is handled by the IRS, State is handled by your state’s department of revenue.

  41. It’s been almost 9 weeks since I e filed called the IRS I don’t owe money they said they don’t know what’s the delay and why it’s taking so long but if u haven’t got a letter u have nothing to worry about they could only hold your taxes for 12 weeks so hopefully some refunds will be out this month

    • Thanks for the twelve week info. I been waiting 8 weeks now. I see no reason for them to hold in what I loaned them all year. It’s my money not theirs. This makes me consider not withholding at a single rate any longer. Mine says tax topic 152. We received two letters a couple days apart saying they need more time to process. I called and all they could tell me was they needed to verify income on my 1040. Well it’s all the same info submitted from both sides me and the employer. I triple check all info. They got tax payments from my checks in a timely manner so why am I still waiting on my money back?

  42. I e-filed using the IRS website on March 2nd. Here it is now April 7th and WMR still at “your taxes have been received and are being processed”. This has been stuck like this since since March 10th. There is no excuse. I have not received a single letter in the mail or a call asking for more information. I received my state tax within 10 days. However, my federal is still in limbo apparently. My husband and I have way too many expenses we need to get caught up on, so this is devistating.

  43. My return was e-filed by H&R Block on February 11, 2017. It has almost been two months and I still have no clue when I will get my refund. Ridiculous. If I waited that long to pay my taxes, I’d be penalized.

    • Same here… We filed a few days after you did and the irs website says our return is still being processed. We have not received anything in the mail or heard from anyone.. We also used HR Block.
