2024 IRS Tax Refund Schedule And Direct Deposit Payment Calendar

By all reports tax return processing and refund payments for the 2024 tax season are going much smoother thanks to IRS investments in technology and no new stimulus payments or tax credits to administer. However further security controls and PATH act restrictions (see below) could delay potential refund payments for some filers.

When Can I Expect My Tax Refund in 2024?

According to the IRS refunds will generally be paid within 21 days. This includes accepting, processing and disbursing approved refund payments via direct deposit or check. This is regular days, not business days.

This was the basis for the estimated 2024 IRS refund schedule/calendar shown below, which has been updated to reflect the Jan 29th, 2024 start date of IRS tax return processing this year.

The refund processing schedule is organized by IRS’ WMR/IRS2Go processing status‘. The listed dates are just week ending estimates and your refund could be paid anytime during the week based on your IRS cycle code (see more on that in sections below).

Further, as many tax filers have found out over the last few years, actual refund payment dates could be much longer if your return is pulled for mandated PATH, additional identity fraud/security checks, special handling or manual agency reviews.

The estimated IRS refund payment dates in the chart above should not be construed as official IRS payment dates. To get the exact date of your refund payment check the IRS’ Where is My Refund (WMR) site or your IRS transcript.

How to read the IRS refund processing schedule

The estimated refund payment dates in the table above are based on past years and IRS processing guidelines. It shows the date your refund will be processed and paid based on the week your return is accepted and refund is approved by the IRS.

The federal IRS refund processing schedule is only for electronically filed returns (e-file) done thorough online tax software providers and assumes your tax return was in order. I.e accepted by the IRS via the WMR tool and status is equal to “Return Received”.

Once your tax return is successfully processed by the IRS, it will go to the “Refund Approved” status, after which it goes to refund sent when the payment is disbursed by the IRS.

Paper filed returns can take considerably longer and could take 1 to 2 weeks longer than the direct deposit payment dates.

Average IRS Refund

Based on the latest statistics from the 2023 tax year the IRS processed over 160 million returns with the average refund payment being $3,089. This was 5% lower than the prior year.

Why Your Refund Payment Could be Delayed

There are many reasons your tax return processing could be delayed beyond what is shown in the standard schedule above. This includes submission errors, IRS reconciliation issues or security/fraud related issues.

This is why many filers are see the “Return Processing Has Been Delayed Beyond The Normal Timeframe (Tax Topic 152)” message during tax season.

Note that as in previous years, if you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) your refund may have been delayed beyond the standard processing times due to the PATH act provisions.

This is to allow for fraud and dependent verification on these dependent related tax credits. See sections below for more on the PATH act and refund release timeline.

For those experiencing ongoing issues or delays with their refunds check out this article on “Why is it taking so long to get my refund.”

IRS Test Batches – Early Refunds

A week or two prior to the IRS officially accepting and processing tax returns, they will often run several test batches with various major tax software providers to “test” and “verify” their systems are integrating externally and processing returns correctly.

This will result in WMR status updates for a small subset of tax payers picked in these early test batches, but refunds won’t be paid until after the official IRS processing date.

Note that early refunds paid as a result of test batch processing are not the same as those via refund advance loans.

When Should Taxpayers contact the IRS?

The IRS has said that phone and walk-in representatives can only research the status of your refund if it has been 21 days or more since you filed electronically, or more than 6 weeks since you mailed your paper return or if the IRS WMR tool directs you to contact them.

You can also see earlier updates from prior tax seasons and the thousands of comments below this article around dealing with delayed tax refund processing issues!

Help! My WMR status bar has disappeared

As many folks have commented, the WMR tracker status bar may disappear or not be shown if your return falls under IRS review after it is received (Status Bar 1: Return Received) because additional information is needed for your return.

This can happen even if you previously checked WMR and it showed the status as “Return Received.”  An explanation or instructions will be provided depending on the situation (e.g. PATH message or Tax Topic 152 as discussed below)

But don’t panic when this happens. The IRS still has your return but things are essentially on hold until the IRS gets the additional information from you to continue processing your return . You will either get directions on WMR or IRS2Go or the IRS will contact you by mail. See more in this video.

Follow the provided instructions and return any additional information ASAP to get your potential refund and reduce any further delays. Talk to your accountant, tax advocate or tax professional if you are not clear on what the IRS is asking for or you don’t get an update after 21 days.

PATH Act and Tax Topic 152

Two of the most common refund related messages showing up on the WMR tool after your tax return is submitted are the PATH message and to Refer to Tax Topic 152.

The PATH message on WMR/IRS2Go relates to the the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act (PATH Act of 2015) and is to notify you that the IRS is legally required to hold and further verify tax returns that include EITC or ACTC.

While the IRS can continue to process affected returns, they cannot issue refund payments until the PATH act lifts. This generally happens from mid-February. See more in this article on PATH act processing for the current tax season.

Path ACT Refund
PATH Refund Delays

The PATH message does not mean your tax return is done and your tax refund is approved. It simply means the IRS systems have identified you are claiming the (EITC) or the (ACTC) on your tax return, and so further processing and payments related to your refund are held up for the statutory hold period (3 weeks after the start of tax season).

Once the PATH restriction is lifted, the IRS will process these returns and pay refunds per the above schedule. You may see Tax code 570 with a Notice 971 code (IRS review adjustment) if your refund is adjusted for other reasons.

When you see the Refer to Tax Topic 152 message it means your refund is being processed and the IRS is directing you its generic refund page for more information. There is not much you can do but wait to see if the IRS finds any issues or requires further verification of your identity or items in your tax return.

A Tax Topic 151 message simply means that you’re getting a tax offset which may result in your refund being less than you expected. The reason for this is that the federal government has “offset” or deducted monies from your tax refund to cover debts you owe other federal agencies. See this article to get more details on why your refund was offset.

You will get an official notice letter/report explaining the actual offset and adjustments to your tax return, and details on how to appeal this action – but likely it will delay you getting your refund.

While not great news, the silver lining here is that the IRS has processed your return and your adjusted refund (where applicable) should be on its way. You will see code 846 on your transcript when the refund has been issued.

What is the IRS Cycle Code on my Transcript?

While the above IRS refund schedule can give you an estimated date for you refund once approved (WMR/IRS2Go status) by the IRS, it may take a while to get there.

So some folks use their IRS tax transcript (free from your IRS account) which shows various tax processing codes and a “cycle code.” This is an eight digit number that indicates when your tax return posted to the IRS Master File (IMF).

The cycle code is updated regularly and when combined with the tax topic code, can provide insight into your tax refund status, processing stages and potential direct deposit date. You can see a deeper discussion on IRS cycle codes in this article.

IRS Tax Transcript Cycle Code

If I can see current year processing details on my IRS tax transcript does it mean I am getting my refund soon?

This question comes up a lot and I have seen a few comments on this suggesting that that if you can see current tax season processing details on your (free) transcript then your refund is on the way. But this is not a factual statement.

The IRS is very clear that just being able to see processing details on your IRS transcript does not mean you will imminently be getting a refund and is among the common myths and misconceptions repeated in social media.

For the current tax season you transcript will update several times in line with your cycle code (discussed above) and IRS processing. The official IRS line is that checking the WMR or IRS2Go tool is the best and official way to check your refund status.

However I have read a number of comments here and on other tax sites saying that when WMR/IRS2Go provides limited information on the refund, your IRS transcript can be a good source to get more details. The is especially the case if your refund processing has been stuck for a while.

IRS system issues and refund delays

Every year the IRS has issues with processing returns in a timely manner and so a number of people see delays in getting their refunds or updates in the status of their refund on the WMR tool/app.

The IRS has said most system processing issues have now been resolved and new funding will be used to upgrade systems.

But given the various legacy systems in place and sheer volume of processing to be done, including prior season backlogs of paper and amended returns, I would not be surprised to see system issues arise again this year, which mean more delays in processing and paying refunds. See more around processing delays in this video.

See these articles for average refund amounts in past tax seasons and refund processing times by state

Amended Tax Return Refund Schedule

While the IRS promises to have regular return refunds processed within 21 days for nine out of ten tax payers, it does take quite a bit longer to receive a refund if you amended your tax return.

Generally you will have to wait up to 16 weeks more for the IRS to process amended returns since they prioritize regular returns. Also note that the standard”Where’s my refund” service from the IRS does not track amended tax return status’. You need to instead use the IRS tool, “Where’s My Amended Return.”

You can also access the tool via phone by calling 1-866-464-2050.  Only call the IRS to follow up on delayed amended return refunds after 12 weeks. The number to call is 1-800-829-1040.

    • I don’t think you’re going to see anything different until at least the 15th since that’s the day the IRS said they will start processing returns with those credits that fall under PATH

      • i didnt claim those credits. thats what i am trying to figure out. I really hope it not to verify ID. i am me the same person same spelling everything. i have scanned my return multiple times over and over. everything is what it should be. i have tax experience so i know somethings to look for but i mean i had 1 w-2. thats it

  2. I filed on January 27th and was accepted. I waited for approval and it was finally approved February 8th. It also now says that my refund should be credited to my bank by tomorrow the 10th. I thought they only dropped money once a week and that puts me way past the date they have given. Why is this happening? Is it because of new staff or what? I’ve never had the issues I’m having this year. Is anyone else experiencing weird stuff?

    • Does it matter?? Yours been approved. Mine was accepted the 26th and as of today it has yet to be approved. I did not claim the EITC or the ACIC, only an opportunity educational credit which falls under PATH; however, as per the IRS site only those claim dependents were to be affected. It’s extremely frustrating because i have no clue as to what the hold up is. On another note, the weekends DO count against your 21 day waiting period. The IRS agents work 7 days a week during tax time.

    • I heard that they deposit money on Tuesday and Friday. If that’s true, you may get it tomorrow, it’s Fri and the 10th. Hope this helps

    • Yes this year has been messed up. Of course compared at this time last year I didn’t get my refund until feb 22, but I was accepted 1/27/16 last year. I was accepted 1/17/17 this year. Hmm…..might get it in a week. Might not. Hope all the best to all of us

  3. That is not true. Several people I know that claimed the credits just received their taxes yesterday and one got his on Tuesday

    • They received a advanced refund then. NO ONE is getting their refunds people The IRS does NOT issue those refunds until after 15th. Its the law!

      Reply
    • Actually, it is true. Depending upon the tax service they used, for example, H&R Block, they could have received a refund advance paid out by the company, not the IRS. If they IRS did payout early to anyone claiming the EITC, or ACTC, they violated federal law. I think you are not getting the full story from the people you know, Tina.

  4. SAME HERE. I DON’T HAVE ANY DEPENDENTS OR ANYTHING AND STILL NO BARS, NO AMOUNT, NO NOTHING AND SO I’M WONDERING WHY I HAVE TO WAIT. I FILED ON THE 19TH AND DON’T EVEN KNOW IF IT WAS ACCEPTED OR NOT.

  5. I filed my taxes on the 31st and it was accepted same day. No dependents, no EIC, nothing extra like that. My status still does not show approved. I should not have to wait but I did get the “Tax Topic 152, Refund Information” message at the bottom. I hope this means I am still good. I could really use the money tomorrow, I remember last year getting it on the 10th but I can’t remember if I was approved the same day I got it, or I was approved then had to wait for it to be sent out..

    • Last year ibgot mines the same day. My approved bar didn’t pop up til way later in the day but my deposit was made early in the morning

      • I’m hoping I wake up tomorrow with the money, although it makes me super nervous that some places are saying the deposit date for my accept range is 17th, really can’t wait that long.

  6. Once you submit your return, it shows up on WMR the bars will go away once it’s done processing (if you’re claiming the EITC and/or the ACTC) It will be replaced with a note saying “According to the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act, the IRS cannot issue refunds before February 15. Check Where’s My Refund after February 15 for your personalized refund status.”
This means accepted, but to just check back for your DDD.

  7. Your return has been received and is currently being processed. If you filed a complete and accurate tax return, your refund should be issued within 21 days of the received date. Processing may take longer under certain circumstances.

  8. My federal taxes were accepted on 1/23 and my wmr bars disappeared several days later. It says my return has been received and it is still processing. There is no error code or tax code and my information is still showing in the left side of screen. 2/13 will make 21 days. It has never taken this long to process before and I have been using taxact for years. I do not claim dependents or the reduced income credit. Should I be worried? Any advice?

    • Yep. Next year adjust your withholding so you pay less tax and then have less of a need for the refund. But the IRS is not the most efficient agency in the world and the American tax code is the most complicated in the world. Add these factors together and you get long waits. Sux for everyone.

        • I’ll translate for you. I had this happen last year. You’ll need to call the number provided to verify your identity. The last part stating that you need a copy of the prior years tax forms is correct. Last year I had to provide the IRS agent with some specific information off my previous years return. (Total income, Federal tax amount etc.) After finishing the verification process I was told it would be up to 90 days to get my refund. Received it approx a week after the call. Good luck.

    • The 4883C letter as essentially saying “[w]e will not be able to process your tax return until we hear from you.” This is an important aspect of the 4883C tax return delay, one that “Where’s My Refund” won’t tell you — your refund will be frozen wherever it is until you pick up the phone and call the IRS.

I don’t even pay attention to it anymore….. But you are right there is no way to know anything for sure until you get the accepted msg and unfortunately for us it will be after the 15th this year…

    • It could be worse. For example, we could live in a country that generalizes an entire population of people because of the actions of a few. We could also be living in East Germany between the 1950’s to late 1980’s, divided by an oppressive wall. We could also be living in a country where empirical scientific research is outright rejected. Can you imagine such a thing? Waiting for our tax returns would be the least of our worries in a country like that.

      Oh, wait . . .

So we filed our tax return since the first week of January once the IRS started accepting we got the bar stating it had been accepted after that we got the message to check after Feb15 due to the earn child credit. However a lot of family and friends also have these credits and have already received their returns.

    • There’s no way they could have gotten it I looked it up and if u claim child or anything else they must hold it until after the 15th so they must have not gotten it

    • Maybe they got an advance from whoever they used to complete their tax returns, which usually comes with additional fees

      Reply
    • No one with those credits have gotten their return. The IRS has been very clear about holding them till the 15th. If they went to HR block or liberty tax services, they probably got a tax return advance which is like a payday loan and usually has steep fees. Hate to burst your bubble. If you still get the tax topic 152 on wmr then you are fine. The 15th is only a week away. Im waiting on $9200.00 but patience is needed. Hang in there and don’t worry.

    • The irs is lien.. Same thing is happening around here. the person claimed after we did and they went to same place as we did and they got theirs already today as a matter of fact. And this place doesn’t do a loan advance.

        • I have a different message today when I check WMR Today 02/09/2017,I still have no bar however it now say’s “We have received your return and it is being processed. FYI I have no child credits my children are all grown up & in their 30’s now.

        • So there are various reasons your tax return could be held up (not just for EITC or ACTC which most are seeing). Your return could just have been put aside for a random ID verification or something in your return did not process. I think wait for 21 days and then call the IRS if you don’t get an update

  28. Is anyone receiving texts that Say “your IRS refund date is getting closer”. I’ve gotten one every day this week . What does that mean?

  29. Federal Return E-Filed and Accepted by the IRS on 1/26/2017. WMR tool has progress bar with Return Received shaded. The “Your Personal Tax Data” information has last four of social, filing status and Your Expected
Refund Amount. What is going and why is there a delay? normally when I E-File it is 10 days? Does it matter when I E-File? January vs. February vs. March? I do not qualify for EITC or ACTC, so that should not be the hold up?

  30. we all know they werent processing til the 23rd.But those that had their stuff went ahead and filed forms out using ready to go software taxact . And yes we got ACCEPTED by the irs figuring wed be processed asap on the 23rd. We even bad bars stating received in the beginning. Mine for ex. dropped off on 1/28 and thats when i got this still processing with no codes or instructions. WE all realize they werent processing til the 23rd we should have been on the top of the stack.

  31. Okay, so there’s hope. Filed and accepted on 1/27, have had one bar this whole time with tax topic 152. Finally today got my second bar and a ddd of 2/10. No EIC or ACTC, but CTC and 4 W2s which probably contributed to the delay. So I line up with the cycle chart above. I did not order transcripts. Filed using Taxact.

  33. @Steve , I filed on 1/23 , accepted on 1/23. Bars disappeared on or about 1/27. Got my 4883c letter (identification verification) on 2/6. Called IRS on 2/7 , got right thru on first try. Answered all the questions correctly of course so my taxes should be back in line to process completely. IRS did say it would be 9wks before I got my refund. I’m just hoping that’s a standard answer they have to give and it comes much sooner.

I did not receive eitc or ctc. Yesterday marked 21 days for me. I did my sister taxes on 1/20 through turbo tax and she got hers back before me

      • I CANNOT get a transcript either. I have no bars, ssn, refund amount and filing is on the left, no tax topic i did with taxact. accepted 1/17. tehcnically 23rd if you think. can anyone PLEASE have any ideas>??

    • @ Cydney , The IRS did not begin to process returns until 1/23. Although you may have filed on 1/17 and your returns were accepted by the IRS , they did not begin looking at them until the 1/23. Make sure you do not count weekends or holiday’s in your 21 day count . I filed 1/23 , accepted on 1/23 , lost my bars about 1/27 and received a letter from the IRS on 2/6 , needing to verify my identity. Maybe that is what is going on with yours .

I’m starting to freak out I never had that I always had the receive bar. I don’t expect my refund anytime soon I’m just not sure what is going on
