2024 IRS Tax Refund Schedule And Direct Deposit Payment Calendar

By all reports tax return processing and refund payments for the 2024 tax season are going much smoother thanks to IRS investments in technology and no new stimulus payments or tax credits to administer. However further security controls and PATH act restrictions (see below) could delay potential refund payments for some filers.

When Can I Expect My Tax Refund in 2024?

According to the IRS refunds will generally be paid within 21 days. This includes accepting, processing and disbursing approved refund payments via direct deposit or check. This is regular days, not business days.

This was the basis for the estimated 2024 IRS refund schedule/calendar shown below, which has been updated to reflect the Jan 29th, 2024 start date of IRS tax return processing this year.

The refund processing schedule is organized by IRS’ WMR/IRS2Go processing status‘. The listed dates are just week ending estimates and your refund could be paid anytime during the week based on your IRS cycle code (see more on that in sections below).

Further, as many tax filers have found out over the last few years, actual refund payment dates could be much longer if your return is pulled for mandated PATH, additional identity fraud/security checks, special handling or manual agency reviews.

The estimated IRS refund payment dates in the chart above should not be construed as official IRS payment dates. To get the exact date of your refund payment check the IRS’ Where is My Refund (WMR) site or your IRS transcript.

How to read the IRS refund processing schedule

The estimated refund payment dates in the table above are based on past years and IRS processing guidelines. It shows the date your refund will be processed and paid based on the week your return is accepted and refund is approved by the IRS.

The federal IRS refund processing schedule is only for electronically filed returns (e-file) done thorough online tax software providers and assumes your tax return was in order. I.e accepted by the IRS via the WMR tool and status is equal to “Return Received”.

Once your tax return is successfully processed by the IRS, it will go to the “Refund Approved” status, after which it goes to refund sent when the payment is disbursed by the IRS.

Paper filed returns can take considerably longer and could take 1 to 2 weeks longer than the direct deposit payment dates.

Average IRS Refund

Based on the latest statistics from the 2023 tax year the IRS processed over 160 million returns with the average refund payment being $3,089. This was 5% lower than the prior year.

Why Your Refund Payment Could be Delayed

There are many reasons your tax return processing could be delayed beyond what is shown in the standard schedule above. This includes submission errors, IRS reconciliation issues or security/fraud related issues.

This is why many filers are see the “Return Processing Has Been Delayed Beyond The Normal Timeframe (Tax Topic 152)” message during tax season.

Note that as in previous years, if you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) your refund may have been delayed beyond the standard processing times due to the PATH act provisions.

This is to allow for fraud and dependent verification on these dependent related tax credits. See sections below for more on the PATH act and refund release timeline.

For those experiencing ongoing issues or delays with their refunds check out this article on “Why is it taking so long to get my refund.”

IRS Test Batches – Early Refunds

A week or two prior to the IRS officially accepting and processing tax returns, they will often run several test batches with various major tax software providers to “test” and “verify” their systems are integrating externally and processing returns correctly.

This will result in WMR status updates for a small subset of tax payers picked in these early test batches, but refunds won’t be paid until after the official IRS processing date.

Note that early refunds paid as a result of test batch processing are not the same as those via refund advance loans.

When Should Taxpayers contact the IRS?

The IRS has said that phone and walk-in representatives can only research the status of your refund if it has been 21 days or more since you filed electronically, or more than 6 weeks since you mailed your paper return or if the IRS WMR tool directs you to contact them.

You can also see earlier updates from prior tax seasons and the thousands of comments below this article around dealing with delayed tax refund processing issues!

Help! My WMR status bar has disappeared

As many folks have commented, the WMR tracker status bar may disappear or not be shown if your return falls under IRS review after it is received (Status Bar 1: Return Received) because additional information is needed for your return.

This can happen even if you previously checked WMR and it showed the status as “Return Received.”  An explanation or instructions will be provided depending on the situation (e.g. PATH message or Tax Topic 152 as discussed below)

But don’t panic when this happens. The IRS still has your return but things are essentially on hold until the IRS gets the additional information from you to continue processing your return . You will either get directions on WMR or IRS2Go or the IRS will contact you by mail. See more in this video.

Follow the provided instructions and return any additional information ASAP to get your potential refund and reduce any further delays. Talk to your accountant, tax advocate or tax professional if you are not clear on what the IRS is asking for or you don’t get an update after 21 days.

PATH Act and Tax Topic 152

Two of the most common refund related messages showing up on the WMR tool after your tax return is submitted are the PATH message and to Refer to Tax Topic 152.

The PATH message on WMR/IRS2Go relates to the the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act (PATH Act of 2015) and is to notify you that the IRS is legally required to hold and further verify tax returns that include EITC or ACTC.

While the IRS can continue to process affected returns, they cannot issue refund payments until the PATH act lifts. This generally happens from mid-February. See more in this article on PATH act processing for the current tax season.

Path ACT Refund
PATH Refund Delays

The PATH message does not mean your tax return is done and your tax refund is approved. It simply means the IRS systems have identified you are claiming the (EITC) or the (ACTC) on your tax return, and so further processing and payments related to your refund are held up for the statutory hold period (3 weeks after the start of tax season).

Once the PATH restriction is lifted, the IRS will process these returns and pay refunds per the above schedule. You may see Tax code 570 with a Notice 971 code (IRS review adjustment) if your refund is adjusted for other reasons.

When you see the Refer to Tax Topic 152 message it means your refund is being processed and the IRS is directing you its generic refund page for more information. There is not much you can do but wait to see if the IRS finds any issues or requires further verification of your identity or items in your tax return.

A Tax Topic 151 message simply means that you’re getting a tax offset which may result in your refund being less than you expected. The reason for this is that the federal government has “offset” or deducted monies from your tax refund to cover debts you owe other federal agencies. See this article to get more details on why your refund was offset.

You will get an official notice letter/report explaining the actual offset and adjustments to your tax return, and details on how to appeal this action – but likely it will delay you getting your refund.

While not great news, the silver lining here is that the IRS has processed your return and your adjusted refund (where applicable) should be on its way. You will see code 846 on your transcript when the refund has been issued.

What is the IRS Cycle Code on my Transcript?

While the above IRS refund schedule can give you an estimated date for you refund once approved (WMR/IRS2Go status) by the IRS, it may take a while to get there.

So some folks use their IRS tax transcript (free from your IRS account) which shows various tax processing codes and a “cycle code.” This is an eight digit number that indicates when your tax return posted to the IRS Master File (IMF).

The cycle code is updated regularly and when combined with the tax topic code, can provide insight into your tax refund status, processing stages and potential direct deposit date. You can see a deeper discussion on IRS cycle codes in this article.

IRS Tax Transcript Cycle Code

If I can see current year processing details on my IRS tax transcript does it mean I am getting my refund soon?

This question comes up a lot and I have seen a few comments on this suggesting that that if you can see current tax season processing details on your (free) transcript then your refund is on the way. But this is not a factual statement.

The IRS is very clear that just being able to see processing details on your IRS transcript does not mean you will imminently be getting a refund and is among the common myths and misconceptions repeated in social media.

For the current tax season you transcript will update several times in line with your cycle code (discussed above) and IRS processing. The official IRS line is that checking the WMR or IRS2Go tool is the best and official way to check your refund status.

However I have read a number of comments here and on other tax sites saying that when WMR/IRS2Go provides limited information on the refund, your IRS transcript can be a good source to get more details. The is especially the case if your refund processing has been stuck for a while.

IRS system issues and refund delays

Every year the IRS has issues with processing returns in a timely manner and so a number of people see delays in getting their refunds or updates in the status of their refund on the WMR tool/app.

The IRS has said most system processing issues have now been resolved and new funding will be used to upgrade systems.

But given the various legacy systems in place and sheer volume of processing to be done, including prior season backlogs of paper and amended returns, I would not be surprised to see system issues arise again this year, which mean more delays in processing and paying refunds. See more around processing delays in this video.

See these articles for average refund amounts in past tax seasons and refund processing times by state

Amended Tax Return Refund Schedule

While the IRS promises to have regular return refunds processed within 21 days for nine out of ten tax payers, it does take quite a bit longer to receive a refund if you amended your tax return.

Generally you will have to wait up to 16 weeks more for the IRS to process amended returns since they prioritize regular returns. Also note that the standard”Where’s my refund” service from the IRS does not track amended tax return status’. You need to instead use the IRS tool, “Where’s My Amended Return.”

You can also access the tool via phone by calling 1-866-464-2050.  Only call the IRS to follow up on delayed amended return refunds after 12 weeks. The number to call is 1-800-829-1040.

  1. I called the IRS twice and the first man that answered would give me no information, plus said he couldn’t look into my account because it would take to much time. I tried again shortly after and got in touch with an EXTREMELY nice representative who looked into my account for me but stated for some reason he couldn’t get it to pull up. He put me on hold and assured me he would get it fixed before hanging up with me. Upon waiting about 5 minutes he picked up again and let me know the problem was resolved and officially all he could tell me was the refund had been accepted and that I should be checking my bank soon for the deposit. He then assured me that the website would be updating by 2/18 and I should be able to track the process then. I asked him if there was a DD date and he said again officially he could not tell me that for sure but to definitely expect my refund no later than the 27th

  2. I filed my tax return on 1/30/17 with a lady who filed it electronically and it is supposed to be direct deposited. However, when I was trying to look at my refund on the IRS website 2 days after filing all the way to today, it keeps telling me the same thing, “We cannot provide any information about your refund. You must wait at least 24 hours after you get the acknowledgement e-mail that your tax return was received by the IRS”. I would think my information is in the system by now, and I do not have a dependent. I wasn’t sure if anyone else was experiencing this issue?

“Your tax refund is scheduled to be sent to your bank by February 22, 2017.

If your refund is not credited to your account by February 27, 2017, check with your bank to see if it has been received.”

Hopefully they release a wire tonight so I dont have to wait until Tuesday because of the 3 day banking weekend.

  9. I filed on 1/26/17 and the IRS accepted it the same day. I got the EIC and Child tax credit too. I checked the WMR and it says its being processed. I am curious on when i will be getting my Direct Deposit. Hopefully soon.

    • It’s after 2/15, which is when they were holding all refunds with dependents and EIC to check for fraud. So it should’ve been accepted by now.

  10. My WMR still says processing, no bars. I claimed the tax credit. I just called and was told there’s a refund date for 2/23. I filed and was accepted on 1/27

  11. I called and they also gave me a DDD of the 23rd but I did mine through TurboTax and have the fee taken out of my refund, so it has to go to their bank then to mine so I’m hoping to see them by the end of next week. As well as, I’m also hoping it’s not just a date they are telling everyone that calls in. It would be nice if they already sent it out and I will have it by that date, but only time will tell.

    • Christina: That’s what I been saying. I hope this isn’t a scripted messege date there throwing at us. So why I just called again from earlier this morning and was just given different information. Now this lady saying I don’t have a direct deposit date. But earlier I was given the 23rd. Lol. I ain’t even mad because a part of me feel they playing games. I think since this week is over and Monday a holiday next week dates are the closest things for them to give us which is 2/22 and 2/23 for 2/24 . Then next week it will be you be have a DDD of Wed 3/1 or Fri 3/3. I think it’s scripted….

    • You do not have to worry the dates they give are very accurate. They only do drops twice a week usually. you can go on the irs website and look up the schedule date from the date it was accepted by the irs

  13. I just got off the phone with an IRS rep ( 1-800-892-0582 ext. 652) no more than 10 minutes ago. I spoke with Ms. Sanchez (I couldn’t remember her first name), but any who I filed on 1/30, and it was accepted the next following day 1/31. I also claimed EITC & ACTC. So I knew about the hold/delay until 2/15. After the 15th my status on WMR showed the $ amount and stated that it has been received and is currently being processed — that was 2 days ago. I want to know an expected date. So I began researching on the IRS website and nearly panicked when I read about the DD’s are going to be released on the week of the 27th. So I did some more digging and stumbled across this blog, read the comments that motivated me to call to get an actual deposit date for myself. The rep had me to verify info, placed me on hold to search my tax return info, then told me my “release” date aka DDD is set for 2/23/17. Hopefully it’ll come sooner, but by Monday being President’s Day, it could be delayed by a day I’m assuming…I hope this helps anyone with mind boggling concerns and questions — Let’s all hope for the best!

  14. So I am able to pull up my transcript but still showing refund processing on WMR with no bar. On the transcript it says refund issue date march 6th… So does that mean I won’t get my refund until that date? I’m confused. I filled early, it for accepted hours after I filed, I did claim the EIC and child tax credit… But why would my refund date be so late?

  15. The best thing to do is to call i called the guy was very nice and have me a deposit date of the 23rd.. 16. I checked WMR little after midnight and it still said it’s being processed then I remembered being told they update the WMR from 3am to 6am. when I woke up this morning at 6:30am Mine showed approved and a DD for 2/22. They are updating peoples WMR in batches. I was accepted early 24th and was a simple w2 with credits. They have already said everything will be updated by February 18th early in the morning for those that are done processing with no issues. So far they have kept to their word on saying when and how they are updating stuff, they just were not to specific about it. Anywho, I’m sure the rest of yall will be done and updated tomorrow AFTER 6am. If there is to much net work traffic on WMR tomorrow or late tonight it will not update that fast. That is why they hired a TON of people for the IRS hot line this year that is working Saturday and Sunday. If you have no letters in the mail or codes on WMR saying to take action. You are fine and you will get your refunds next week or the Monday of the 27 to the Wednesday of march 1st. Hang in there peopes, IRS does not suck that bad, it’s the rules they have to follow set fourth by congress. Remember they are people to who have to deal with nervous, anxious and some times mean people. I would hate to walk in their shoes for a day lol.

My sister filed hers on the 30th and accepted on the 30th had her DDD today on WMR for the 22nd and that’s when I started to worry a lot. I filed on 1/28 accepted the same day and WMR stated that it was still processing..I have EIC and Child credit so I NEED THAT. Anyways I ended up calling irs and the person helped me was super nice. He researched my account and said that there is a DDD of the 23rd. I am so thankful right now…

I would suggest anyone that is still waiting for a DDD to maybe call them..I hope this helps someone and ease their mind a little. :)

Hopefully I will receive my deposit before then since my card advertise receive refunds two days sooner.

It’s been more than 3 weeks so I will call today, but it seems they screwed me like last year…

This means making an appointment for a month away, going there, having the tax person not be able to do their job, screw up, get another letter, make another appointment a month away and maybe finally getting it in 3 to 4 more months….

  28. Mine also was approved! set to be deposited by the 22nd which could even show up today. Last year I saw my deposit the same day the wmr tool updated. Also, the cycle chart shows if you filed betwee the 3rd and the 10th, your expected deposit date is the 17th. Sounds good all the way around. I’m just trying to figutr out if they deposit on the weekends or atleast Saturday?

    • No weekend deposits. With Monday being a bank holiday, Tuesday is a best guess. And there is usually a few days delay between the time the IRS sends it to your bank and the bank clears it. I would guess you would have it in your account by the end of the week.

  29. If you got a mail date of 2/24 or a DD of 2/22 , I would almos bet you will get it sooner because the IRS wants to get the funds out asap to rid of the millions of phone call per day . They really don’t like this mess anymore than we do ! If you didn’t get update today , you will tomorrow if you were early file . Good luck to all !!!

  31. Those of you that say it hasn’t changed should call. Mine my boyfriend and my 2 friends both say on wmr it’ll be direct deposited on 22!! I’m just happy for answers.

  32. So still no update on WMR BUT I can finally see my account transcripts for my returns(yes returns I had to file for 4 years due to fraud) now on one transcript it gives me a refund due code and on the other one, it does not give me a code. Does that mean one will be deposited over the other? Because the one that doesn’t have the refund due code is the one I REALLY need sooner than later.

  33. So I broke down and called the IRS this morning at 7 EST.
The lady that answered was very nice and helpful. She put me on hold to research and came back and informed me that my refund was processed and gave me a DDD of 2/23/17. THis info was given to me even though my WMR page has not been updated as so. And I my file was accepted on 1/13/17.
So if you’re worried because your WMR has not yet been updated I suggest you call (800) 829-0582 ext 652 (thanks for that number again Jazzy). From what I read from those that have already called it’s hit and miss with the person, attitude and effort you get on the other side of the phone.
Good luck everyone and I hope you all get DDD’s and YOUR MONEY soon.

  34. I filed my taxes on 1/17/17 and they where excepetd an hour later. I had the path message and it updated to processing yesterday. I woke up this morning and it’s still processing !! Ugh I don’t know what is going on!! I haven’t called the IRS yet and I really don’t want to bother them. Does anyone else still have the processing message?

    • Mine was accepted the same date. This morning I called (800) 829-0582 ext 652 and I fortunately was answered by a helpful person and was told my return had been processed and my DDD is 2/23 and as of right now my WMR page says that it is still being processed.
So you may already have a DDD but it’s just not up.

  36. WMR this a.m. still shows the received and is being processed, however..I just checked my transcript and now have code 846 with REFUND issued and my amount! hopefully it will be sent over to my bank soon. In years past..my refund has always been deposited and WMR still shows received or processed, etc. Maybe there is light at the end of this dark tunnel after all..we shall see..check your transcripts if you can y’all :~)

  38. Good morning all! I typically wouldn’t post in any comments but considering how long I spent reading them the night before last and the tiny bit of confidence I received I figured I’d let others know my status too. I filed Jan 29 and my return was accepted Jan 30. I claimed EIC and Child Tax Credit. On Feb 16, WMR stated my refund was accepted and being processed, no bars and no codes. I checked again this morning, bars have returned, and I have DDD of Feb 22 for funds to be sent to my bank. Hope this helps!

    • Thank you Tiffany. That sets my mind at ease. I filed on January 27 and was accepted on the 28 and I was worried when my WMR message said return accepted and being processed with no bars or codes. I am relieved to know that you were in the same situation and received a DDD. Thank you for posting
