2024 IRS Tax Refund Schedule And Direct Deposit Payment Calendar

By all reports tax return processing and refund payments for the 2024 tax season are going much smoother thanks to IRS investments in technology and no new stimulus payments or tax credits to administer. However further security controls and PATH act restrictions (see below) could delay potential refund payments for some filers.

When Can I Expect My Tax Refund in 2024?

According to the IRS refunds will generally be paid within 21 days. This includes accepting, processing and disbursing approved refund payments via direct deposit or check. This is regular days, not business days.

This was the basis for the estimated 2024 IRS refund schedule/calendar shown below, which has been updated to reflect the Jan 29th, 2024 start date of IRS tax return processing this year.

The refund processing schedule is organized by IRS’ WMR/IRS2Go processing status‘. The listed dates are just week ending estimates and your refund could be paid anytime during the week based on your IRS cycle code (see more on that in sections below).

Further, as many tax filers have found out over the last few years, actual refund payment dates could be much longer if your return is pulled for mandated PATH, additional identity fraud/security checks, special handling or manual agency reviews.

The estimated IRS refund payment dates in the chart above should not be construed as official IRS payment dates. To get the exact date of your refund payment check the IRS’ Where is My Refund (WMR) site or your IRS transcript.

How to read the IRS refund processing schedule

The estimated refund payment dates in the table above are based on past years and IRS processing guidelines. It shows the date your refund will be processed and paid based on the week your return is accepted and refund is approved by the IRS.

The federal IRS refund processing schedule is only for electronically filed returns (e-file) done thorough online tax software providers and assumes your tax return was in order. I.e accepted by the IRS via the WMR tool and status is equal to “Return Received”.

Once your tax return is successfully processed by the IRS, it will go to the “Refund Approved” status, after which it goes to refund sent when the payment is disbursed by the IRS.

Paper filed returns can take considerably longer and could take 1 to 2 weeks longer than the direct deposit payment dates.

Average IRS Refund

Based on the latest statistics from the 2023 tax year the IRS processed over 160 million returns with the average refund payment being $3,089. This was 5% lower than the prior year.

Why Your Refund Payment Could be Delayed

There are many reasons your tax return processing could be delayed beyond what is shown in the standard schedule above. This includes submission errors, IRS reconciliation issues or security/fraud related issues.

This is why many filers are see the “Return Processing Has Been Delayed Beyond The Normal Timeframe (Tax Topic 152)” message during tax season.

Note that as in previous years, if you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) your refund may have been delayed beyond the standard processing times due to the PATH act provisions.

This is to allow for fraud and dependent verification on these dependent related tax credits. See sections below for more on the PATH act and refund release timeline.

For those experiencing ongoing issues or delays with their refunds check out this article on “Why is it taking so long to get my refund.”

IRS Test Batches – Early Refunds

A week or two prior to the IRS officially accepting and processing tax returns, they will often run several test batches with various major tax software providers to “test” and “verify” their systems are integrating externally and processing returns correctly.

This will result in WMR status updates for a small subset of tax payers picked in these early test batches, but refunds won’t be paid until after the official IRS processing date.

Note that early refunds paid as a result of test batch processing are not the same as those via refund advance loans.

When Should Taxpayers contact the IRS?

The IRS has said that phone and walk-in representatives can only research the status of your refund if it has been 21 days or more since you filed electronically, or more than 6 weeks since you mailed your paper return or if the IRS WMR tool directs you to contact them.

You can also see earlier updates from prior tax seasons and the thousands of comments below this article around dealing with delayed tax refund processing issues!

Help! My WMR status bar has disappeared

As many folks have commented, the WMR tracker status bar may disappear or not be shown if your return falls under IRS review after it is received (Status Bar 1: Return Received) because additional information is needed for your return.

This can happen even if you previously checked WMR and it showed the status as “Return Received.”  An explanation or instructions will be provided depending on the situation (e.g. PATH message or Tax Topic 152 as discussed below)

But don’t panic when this happens. The IRS still has your return but things are essentially on hold until the IRS gets the additional information from you to continue processing your return . You will either get directions on WMR or IRS2Go or the IRS will contact you by mail. See more in this video.

Follow the provided instructions and return any additional information ASAP to get your potential refund and reduce any further delays. Talk to your accountant, tax advocate or tax professional if you are not clear on what the IRS is asking for or you don’t get an update after 21 days.

PATH Act and Tax Topic 152

Two of the most common refund related messages showing up on the WMR tool after your tax return is submitted are the PATH message and to Refer to Tax Topic 152.

The PATH message on WMR/IRS2Go relates to the the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act (PATH Act of 2015) and is to notify you that the IRS is legally required to hold and further verify tax returns that include EITC or ACTC.

While the IRS can continue to process affected returns, they cannot issue refund payments until the PATH act lifts. This generally happens from mid-February. See more in this article on PATH act processing for the current tax season.

Path ACT Refund
PATH Refund Delays

The PATH message does not mean your tax return is done and your tax refund is approved. It simply means the IRS systems have identified you are claiming the (EITC) or the (ACTC) on your tax return, and so further processing and payments related to your refund are held up for the statutory hold period (3 weeks after the start of tax season).

Once the PATH restriction is lifted, the IRS will process these returns and pay refunds per the above schedule. You may see Tax code 570 with a Notice 971 code (IRS review adjustment) if your refund is adjusted for other reasons.

When you see the Refer to Tax Topic 152 message it means your refund is being processed and the IRS is directing you its generic refund page for more information. There is not much you can do but wait to see if the IRS finds any issues or requires further verification of your identity or items in your tax return.

A Tax Topic 151 message simply means that you’re getting a tax offset which may result in your refund being less than you expected. The reason for this is that the federal government has “offset” or deducted monies from your tax refund to cover debts you owe other federal agencies. See this article to get more details on why your refund was offset.

You will get an official notice letter/report explaining the actual offset and adjustments to your tax return, and details on how to appeal this action – but likely it will delay you getting your refund.

While not great news, the silver lining here is that the IRS has processed your return and your adjusted refund (where applicable) should be on its way. You will see code 846 on your transcript when the refund has been issued.

What is the IRS Cycle Code on my Transcript?

While the above IRS refund schedule can give you an estimated date for you refund once approved (WMR/IRS2Go status) by the IRS, it may take a while to get there.

So some folks use their IRS tax transcript (free from your IRS account) which shows various tax processing codes and a “cycle code.” This is an eight digit number that indicates when your tax return posted to the IRS Master File (IMF).

The cycle code is updated regularly and when combined with the tax topic code, can provide insight into your tax refund status, processing stages and potential direct deposit date. You can see a deeper discussion on IRS cycle codes in this article.

IRS Tax Transcript Cycle Code

If I can see current year processing details on my IRS tax transcript does it mean I am getting my refund soon?

This question comes up a lot and I have seen a few comments on this suggesting that that if you can see current tax season processing details on your (free) transcript then your refund is on the way. But this is not a factual statement.

The IRS is very clear that just being able to see processing details on your IRS transcript does not mean you will imminently be getting a refund and is among the common myths and misconceptions repeated in social media.

For the current tax season you transcript will update several times in line with your cycle code (discussed above) and IRS processing. The official IRS line is that checking the WMR or IRS2Go tool is the best and official way to check your refund status.

However I have read a number of comments here and on other tax sites saying that when WMR/IRS2Go provides limited information on the refund, your IRS transcript can be a good source to get more details. The is especially the case if your refund processing has been stuck for a while.

IRS system issues and refund delays

Every year the IRS has issues with processing returns in a timely manner and so a number of people see delays in getting their refunds or updates in the status of their refund on the WMR tool/app.

The IRS has said most system processing issues have now been resolved and new funding will be used to upgrade systems.

But given the various legacy systems in place and sheer volume of processing to be done, including prior season backlogs of paper and amended returns, I would not be surprised to see system issues arise again this year, which mean more delays in processing and paying refunds. See more around processing delays in this video.

See these articles for average refund amounts in past tax seasons and refund processing times by state

Amended Tax Return Refund Schedule

While the IRS promises to have regular return refunds processed within 21 days for nine out of ten tax payers, it does take quite a bit longer to receive a refund if you amended your tax return.

Generally you will have to wait up to 16 weeks more for the IRS to process amended returns since they prioritize regular returns. Also note that the standard”Where’s my refund” service from the IRS does not track amended tax return status’. You need to instead use the IRS tool, “Where’s My Amended Return.”

You can also access the tool via phone by calling 1-866-464-2050.  Only call the IRS to follow up on delayed amended return refunds after 12 weeks. The number to call is 1-800-829-1040.

  1. Can someone break this down for me my return transcript says 20170505 received date 4/15/17 but my account transcript received date is 2/13/17

    Reply
    • Meg, you are the first one that has a 5th week with a date of 2-13-17. When was you accepted? During the week of 1-30 thru 2-4? Based on the code you would have a accepted date of 2-2, transcript on 2-3 and updated to PATH MSG on 2-4 and a processing date of 2-20-17. If you filed earlier then you have been re-sequenced back in order in the 4th week to have a date of 2-13-17. Just a little confused. Is that your processing date on your “account” transcript the 2nd date given?

      Reply
      • I filed and accepted 1/24 and my account transcript says 2/13 so I was confused when my return transcript said received 4/15

        Reply
        • Meg, that is a generic date for the deadline to file tax returns for everyone…you need to scroll down and look at the “processing date. What I am confused about is if you filed on 1/24 your cycle code should be 20170405 not 20170505 will you recheck that cycle code again…girl I am tripping if you say it is 20170505…lol. weird.

    • Meg, if you have a processing date of 2-13-17 you should be in the 1st release batch of DDD’s. The cycle for that date goes with 20170405. With IRS ….nothing is consistent or normal…lol. Thank God we will be able to sort all this out by the 18th…lol.

      • My cycle is the same as Meg, 20170505, but says processing date Feb 20, 2017, just finalized my divorce, got new job, and I’m treating myself to dimple creation at Dr. Kim’s office in Duluth, Ga, and buying a second vehicle, and put the rest up, can’t wait to get those dimples

        • Toya, whew now your cycle is correct…lol. LMBO you go girl…get those dimples and that 2nd vehicle. You going to be balling…uh? I ain’t jealous of you…I just wish I could do the same…hehehehehheheh…you guys have a goodnight…

        • Toya, congrats on your new job….and finalizing your divorce, I am sure it was a very difficult and stressful event to go thru.

  2. Still being processed but i wasnt able to order my transcript until last wednesday and it finally let me order it

    • Volinda, let me know when you get your transcripts, hope they are not blank. Just worried that the WMR is stating you under a review or pending for some issue…until your bars disappears and the amount is gone and you get the PATH message…something is holding up your update….please call to check…or you can be delayed much further…since the massive updates for eic is about to take place…all the others will be pushed back…until the complete the backlog…you will be resequenced.

      • Jazzy, I am not so certain one can depend on the accuracy of the WMR page. I say that because more and more people are claiming they have not seen an updated status in weeks. My guess: the IRS is backlogged because of The PATH Act and is not updating the WMR to reflect the most recent (accurate) status.

Then again, I may just be feeling overoptimistic . . . And that is so out of character for me! Haha!

        Reply
        • During my wait I have to agree as well with wmr not updating daily however, my transcript was not available until feb 10th and wmr updated the 11th. I guess it just depends…

        • Candace, you are right. I think each individual IRS case can be unique unto itself, insofar as the IRS’s response time; every year I see a different rules and processing times. I am not complaining about having to wait so long for a refund, but I do understand why people are upset about not receiving an updated status, at the very least. I hope that makes sense.

        • I meant to write, “a different set of rules.” I have not yet had my coffee and am not fully focused. Haha!

  3. Mine is the same way Erica were u able to get ur account transcript they said if u can get that but im not sure Jazzy can u help us

    Reply
    • Volinda and Erica, do you have it yet or they being mailed? Correct, if you can order your “ACCOUNT” transcript which is the one that has the codes to determine your status. When you can order both that is a good sign it is done processing. They can still pend it if they are waiting for something to be reviewed or needing verification before they release the hold. A simple phone call usually fix it right away…or faxing them what they ask for if there is an issue to speed it up.

    • Mike, there may NOT be a next year for EIC/ACTC…if Trump gets his way. They just confirm the new Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and he plan to support Trump Tax Plan…google it. He is doing away with those credits and head of household. Only going to keep the CTC for children up to 13th. Let’s just pray they don’t get it passed for 2018. If we are lucky, we may only have 1 more year to deal with this Path drama…Hope Congress reject those changes. SMH.

  4. Got transcript in cycle date 20170405 no refund code due to having eic and extra child credit. I was processed on Feb 2nd. Cycle dates for us extra credit folks means nothing other than being processed. From what I have read all over, refund releases start Feb 15 for people processed with early cycles. Youll get wmr update after the refund has been released and sent on the 16 or so. Luckly I have etrade bank so mine hits same day at 5pmn we shall see. It did past 4 years

  5. Jazzy, I was accepted on the 24th early in the day. Sitting on PATH message since 02/04. I can order both transcripts just not online (only person ever without a credit card lol) not sure which batch I should be in. Hoping for this week but betting on later. Any insight?

    Reply
    • Hi Anthony, when you get your transcript it should have cycle code 20170401 you will be in the 1st batch of releases. IRS will stagger the DDD over a 2 week period, but we should be the 1st schedule DDD. Unless IRS has another sequence order that don’t comply with first in – first out…Your processing date will state 2-13-17. Keep your eyes on your bank account. IRS promises to give ALL of us a DDD starting the 16-18 on the WMR….but you may get your deposits about 4 days before that date…

    • I ordered mines over the phone on 02/04, it wouldn’t allow me to see online, I got car loan and credit card, system didn’t recognize it, I’m surprised that I was able to get a detailed transcript, I have always had IRS identity Pin, so normally they will send me a letter stating that a transcript was ordered and i had to call a number and talk to a rep, and verify identity and then transcript is sent

    • LaToya,

Go to WMR and click above on the tab Refund Help….scroll down and you will see the dates and times WMR updates each day. But the main major updates are Thursdays, Saturday and Monday’s. Monday is the date the Master File is submitted to the Treasury to release DDD for Wed and Thursday. It does update daily every morning after 6am est.

    • jwolf, cut off for the Master Tape is on Wednesday’s. So for early testers who filed between Jan 1 – 18th with EiC /ACTC credit are the 1st batch on hold, then 2nd batch would be 1-19 thru 1-25, But since the first 3 weeks of Jan will be combined with the 4th week; we all in the same batch…1st and 2nd will be consider the 1st release….but IRS has to release over 50 millions they estimated with the credits…they have to work around the clock and release Master Tape daily instead of weekly…

  7. JAZZY I flied on 1/19 and got accepted on 1/23 and I have the PATH message stating to check back on the 15th of feb. for an estimated delivery date and topic 152 and I was able to order my transcripts by mail. So does this mean that I will receive my estimated delivery date on the 15th?

    Reply
    • Hi jwolf…..YES you can expect to see an update with your DDD any day now. IRS is stating 16th – 18th…but hey, check that bank account anyways….I bet we will see a pending deposit before that happens. They are going to start releasing them on the 15th, so they say…yeah right?….who they think their fooling. A rep tried to tell me they haven’t even been processed yet..smh. Good news for a lot of us between now and Friday…about time uh?…LOL.

  8. Hello. I filed through a third party 2/5/17. I’ve been checking WMR daily and it says I’ll get my status after I get the acceptance email. It does tell me to refer to path 152 though. No bars and my total is to the left. Am I getting my refund after 2/27? Should I be worried?

    Reply
    • When did you get accepted? We have to start with that date. Let’s say you got accepted on the 2-6. You would have a cycle of 20170602 which once you are able to view your account transcript you should see a processing date of 2-27-16. So you may not be in the 1st batch…maybe the 2nd or 3rd. But IRS is accelerating and combing batched for release of millions of refunds…you could see an update between 16th -18th. If not most likely by the 27th…cross your fingers :-)

    • Yes I had the 152 path message 2 weeks later I got a path message saying I have to wait until Feb 15 to see an update and i ordered my transcripts

    • Misty, that is not the PATH message you get after being processed. Your bars disappears and the amount on the side “gone”…You get a FULL PAGE PATH message, starting check back for a personal DDD date after the 15th. Everyone got the 152 path message where you click on the Code 152 to read. The other one…pops up after the bars disappears…. I think people are getting confused about the (2) path message, that’s all…

      • Yup you get two different messages. And the one that let you know you are finished says to come back after Feb 15 for your personalized refund date.

  14. Finally got approval notice on Saturday morning 2-11, and showing my DDD to be BY Feb. 15th (no EITC or PATH, just basic filing with Turbo Tax) and to check if not showing up by the 20th… Hope that means it will be there the 15th!!! Tomorrow would be good too!!!

You should be able to; if so your cycle should be 20170504 with a processing date of 2-20-17. Feb 1 = 5th week of the year, (04) = Wed…You get the PATH message yet? If so, you should be ok. if the WMR is not saying “still process at date will be available…your hold up is the change (married/jointly) any new changes triggers a review…call them it will ease your mind ok.

    • Dora, (FED) accepted on the 29th that would be the 5th week of the year…your cycle code would be 201705. If you are daily last (2) digit should be (02) since Sunday is no processing…so Monday =(02)….20170502 or weekly 20170505. Which you should have updated on 2-2, see your transcripts on 2-3 and got the PATH message on 2-4-17 (sat). Your transcript should show a Processing date of 02-20-17. Depends on how IRS is batching releases you could see an update this week or next for sure…

        Reply
        • Hi Tiara,
Your cycle code on your transcript will read 20170305; since the first 3 weeks of Jan was dead cycle your week will be combined with 20170405 the 4th week of Jan. 19th falls on a Thursday which = Day 5. That could be weekly/daily. Since IRS did not start processing until 23rd…Your Processing date will be 2-13-17…you will find this on your “account” transcript…you should be in the 1st batch of refunds released…hopefully by Friday.

Dead Cycles – A Week Counter
For IMF, there are three dead cycles each year. For 2017, they are ECC-MTB Posting Cycles 201701, 201702, and 201703. IMF transactions that are sent from the campus locations during GMF Campus Production Cycles 201701, 201702, 201703, and 201704 will attempt to post to the IMF during ECC-MTB Posting Cycle 201704.

        • IMF Cycle Date is a daily cycle designated by an eight digit number indicating the year, the two digit cycle number and the two digit number indicating the day of the week (YYYYWWDD). The following values for DD are defined:

          01 = Friday

          02 = Monday

          03 = Tuesday

          04 = Wednesday

        • Tiara, can you view your transcript? See if you see the cycle 20170305 or 20170405 ….and processing date of 2-13-17. And thank you I read the entire IRS manual and I do have some background in IRS.

        • I was able to order my acct. Transcript but i havent got it in the mail yet what will i find on it?

        • I can’t because I don’t have a credit card. I would have to wait until they mail it to me, but if it does shows 20170305 or 20170405 with process date 2-13-17, when should I expect it to be DD? I mean it should say that if my return was accepted on 1-19, right?

      • I just looked… and my txts from the tax program… said fed, and ny were accepted the 29th. lol… then rcvd a 2nd accepted from fed, the 30th. and a 2nd from ny the 31st?? weird.

  26. According to the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act, the IRS cannot issue refunds before February 15 for tax returns that claim the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit. This applies to the entire refund, even the portion not associated with these credits.
Check Where’s My Refund after February 15 for your personalized refund status. It’s updated once a day and remains the best way to check the status of your refund.

    This is good right?

  30. Morning ALL, wow what a curvy path we have had to follow, but it looks like most of us with the PATH message and transcripts has finally reached the final step to that DDD this week or next. Congrats if you are one of them. For those who WMR has not updated it is time to make that CALL to IRS ASAP. It just may be something simple as needing ID verification to release the hold. Don’t sit back and worry get answers….at least it will ease your mind if noting else.

    • Forgive my ignorance but were people not getting the PATH message right away? My fiance e-filed early and once the return was accepted he got that PATH message right away, and it hasn’t changed since. Does that mean everything is set for us to potentially have a DDP message after the 15th?

Did the Path message say Check back after the 15th for a date for your DDD? I think he got a generic path message…there are (2) different path message. Make sure you got one when his bars disappeared and the amount on the WMR was gone….that is the one you need to know you are done and may be ok…

(I filed after, I already received mine since I didn’t get the EITC)

    • Hello,
So Jazzy do you know if the processing date says 2/13/2017, will the IRS release the funds to our accounts so that they hit on 2/15/2017?

WMR usually don’t update until a few days after the fact….I will keep you posted when I check my online transcript in the morning and each day up until Friday deposits to see if I get the 846 code or for a pending deposit…a lot of us should have great news on Wednesday morning if not tomorrow..

Yes I have EIC AND ACTC. YES I’M AWARE OF THE 15TH. I’M ASKING ABOUT THESE TRANSCRIPTS.

    But mines also says

*RETURN DUE DATE OR RETURN RECEIVED DATE (WHICEVER IS LATER) Apr. 15, 2017
    *PROCESSING. Feb. 20, 2017

BUT YET I STILL HAVE MY PATH MESSEGE AND TT 152 SINCE 2/5/2017. I’m sitting tight. I just need to know what this means

    • Megan, your cycle means that in 2017 they processed your return in the 5th week which would fall (1-30 thru 2-5). which is 201705….last 2 digit (05) are weekly which process on Thursdays which was 2-2. You updated on Friday 2-3 and could order your transcript that day. On Saturday 2-4 the WMR updated to the Path message. So since 2-4 you were officially done processing. First (3) weeks of Jan were dead cycles (No processing)…they combined those weeks with the 4th week 201704…

      Reply
      • Since the 4th week if the 1st batch to process for refunds our Processing date is 2-13-17 which should be this week deposits. 2nd batch should be 2-20-17, next 2-27-17… IRS will be combing multiple batches to release millions of refunds pending due to the PATH LAW….so you could be released this week. I am sure they will be additional releases daily…
