2024 IRS Tax Refund Schedule And Direct Deposit Payment Calendar

By all reports tax return processing and refund payments for the 2024 tax season are going much smoother thanks to IRS investments in technology and no new stimulus payments or tax credits to administer. However further security controls and PATH act restrictions (see below) could delay potential refund payments for some filers.

When Can I Expect My Tax Refund in 2024?

According to the IRS refunds will generally be paid within 21 days. This includes accepting, processing and disbursing approved refund payments via direct deposit or check. This is regular days, not business days.

This was the basis for the estimated 2024 IRS refund schedule/calendar shown below, which has been updated to reflect the Jan 29th, 2024 start date of IRS tax return processing this year.

The refund processing schedule is organized by IRS’ WMR/IRS2Go processing status‘. The listed dates are just week ending estimates and your refund could be paid anytime during the week based on your IRS cycle code (see more on that in sections below).

Further, as many tax filers have found out over the last few years, actual refund payment dates could be much longer if your return is pulled for mandated PATH, additional identity fraud/security checks, special handling or manual agency reviews.

The estimated IRS refund payment dates in the chart above should not be construed as official IRS payment dates. To get the exact date of your refund payment check the IRS’ Where is My Refund (WMR) site or your IRS transcript.

How to read the IRS refund processing schedule

The estimated refund payment dates in the table above are based on past years and IRS processing guidelines. It shows the date your refund will be processed and paid based on the week your return is accepted and refund is approved by the IRS.

The federal IRS refund processing schedule is only for electronically filed returns (e-file) done thorough online tax software providers and assumes your tax return was in order. I.e accepted by the IRS via the WMR tool and status is equal to “Return Received”.

Once your tax return is successfully processed by the IRS, it will go to the “Refund Approved” status, after which it goes to refund sent when the payment is disbursed by the IRS.

Paper filed returns can take considerably longer and could take 1 to 2 weeks longer than the direct deposit payment dates.

Average IRS Refund

Based on the latest statistics from the 2023 tax year the IRS processed over 160 million returns with the average refund payment being $3,089. This was 5% lower than the prior year.

Why Your Refund Payment Could be Delayed

There are many reasons your tax return processing could be delayed beyond what is shown in the standard schedule above. This includes submission errors, IRS reconciliation issues or security/fraud related issues.

This is why many filers are see the “Return Processing Has Been Delayed Beyond The Normal Timeframe (Tax Topic 152)” message during tax season.

Note that as in previous years, if you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) your refund may have been delayed beyond the standard processing times due to the PATH act provisions.

This is to allow for fraud and dependent verification on these dependent related tax credits. See sections below for more on the PATH act and refund release timeline.

For those experiencing ongoing issues or delays with their refunds check out this article on “Why is it taking so long to get my refund.”

IRS Test Batches – Early Refunds

A week or two prior to the IRS officially accepting and processing tax returns, they will often run several test batches with various major tax software providers to “test” and “verify” their systems are integrating externally and processing returns correctly.

This will result in WMR status updates for a small subset of tax payers picked in these early test batches, but refunds won’t be paid until after the official IRS processing date.

Note that early refunds paid as a result of test batch processing are not the same as those via refund advance loans.

When Should Taxpayers contact the IRS?

The IRS has said that phone and walk-in representatives can only research the status of your refund if it has been 21 days or more since you filed electronically, or more than 6 weeks since you mailed your paper return or if the IRS WMR tool directs you to contact them.

You can also see earlier updates from prior tax seasons and the thousands of comments below this article around dealing with delayed tax refund processing issues!

Help! My WMR status bar has disappeared

As many folks have commented, the WMR tracker status bar may disappear or not be shown if your return falls under IRS review after it is received (Status Bar 1: Return Received) because additional information is needed for your return.

This can happen even if you previously checked WMR and it showed the status as “Return Received.”  An explanation or instructions will be provided depending on the situation (e.g. PATH message or Tax Topic 152 as discussed below)

But don’t panic when this happens. The IRS still has your return but things are essentially on hold until the IRS gets the additional information from you to continue processing your return . You will either get directions on WMR or IRS2Go or the IRS will contact you by mail. See more in this video.

Follow the provided instructions and return any additional information ASAP to get your potential refund and reduce any further delays. Talk to your accountant, tax advocate or tax professional if you are not clear on what the IRS is asking for or you don’t get an update after 21 days.

PATH Act and Tax Topic 152

Two of the most common refund related messages showing up on the WMR tool after your tax return is submitted are the PATH message and to Refer to Tax Topic 152.

The PATH message on WMR/IRS2Go relates to the the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act (PATH Act of 2015) and is to notify you that the IRS is legally required to hold and further verify tax returns that include EITC or ACTC.

While the IRS can continue to process affected returns, they cannot issue refund payments until the PATH act lifts. This generally happens from mid-February. See more in this article on PATH act processing for the current tax season.

Path ACT Refund
PATH Refund Delays

The PATH message does not mean your tax return is done and your tax refund is approved. It simply means the IRS systems have identified you are claiming the (EITC) or the (ACTC) on your tax return, and so further processing and payments related to your refund are held up for the statutory hold period (3 weeks after the start of tax season).

Once the PATH restriction is lifted, the IRS will process these returns and pay refunds per the above schedule. You may see Tax code 570 with a Notice 971 code (IRS review adjustment) if your refund is adjusted for other reasons.

When you see the Refer to Tax Topic 152 message it means your refund is being processed and the IRS is directing you its generic refund page for more information. There is not much you can do but wait to see if the IRS finds any issues or requires further verification of your identity or items in your tax return.

A Tax Topic 151 message simply means that you’re getting a tax offset which may result in your refund being less than you expected. The reason for this is that the federal government has “offset” or deducted monies from your tax refund to cover debts you owe other federal agencies. See this article to get more details on why your refund was offset.

You will get an official notice letter/report explaining the actual offset and adjustments to your tax return, and details on how to appeal this action – but likely it will delay you getting your refund.

While not great news, the silver lining here is that the IRS has processed your return and your adjusted refund (where applicable) should be on its way. You will see code 846 on your transcript when the refund has been issued.

What is the IRS Cycle Code on my Transcript?

While the above IRS refund schedule can give you an estimated date for you refund once approved (WMR/IRS2Go status) by the IRS, it may take a while to get there.

So some folks use their IRS tax transcript (free from your IRS account) which shows various tax processing codes and a “cycle code.” This is an eight digit number that indicates when your tax return posted to the IRS Master File (IMF).

The cycle code is updated regularly and when combined with the tax topic code, can provide insight into your tax refund status, processing stages and potential direct deposit date. You can see a deeper discussion on IRS cycle codes in this article.

IRS Tax Transcript Cycle Code

If I can see current year processing details on my IRS tax transcript does it mean I am getting my refund soon?

This question comes up a lot and I have seen a few comments on this suggesting that that if you can see current tax season processing details on your (free) transcript then your refund is on the way. But this is not a factual statement.

The IRS is very clear that just being able to see processing details on your IRS transcript does not mean you will imminently be getting a refund and is among the common myths and misconceptions repeated in social media.

For the current tax season you transcript will update several times in line with your cycle code (discussed above) and IRS processing. The official IRS line is that checking the WMR or IRS2Go tool is the best and official way to check your refund status.

However I have read a number of comments here and on other tax sites saying that when WMR/IRS2Go provides limited information on the refund, your IRS transcript can be a good source to get more details. The is especially the case if your refund processing has been stuck for a while.

IRS system issues and refund delays

Every year the IRS has issues with processing returns in a timely manner and so a number of people see delays in getting their refunds or updates in the status of their refund on the WMR tool/app.

The IRS has said most system processing issues have now been resolved and new funding will be used to upgrade systems.

But given the various legacy systems in place and sheer volume of processing to be done, including prior season backlogs of paper and amended returns, I would not be surprised to see system issues arise again this year, which mean more delays in processing and paying refunds. See more around processing delays in this video.

See these articles for average refund amounts in past tax seasons and refund processing times by state

Amended Tax Return Refund Schedule

While the IRS promises to have regular return refunds processed within 21 days for nine out of ten tax payers, it does take quite a bit longer to receive a refund if you amended your tax return.

Generally you will have to wait up to 16 weeks more for the IRS to process amended returns since they prioritize regular returns. Also note that the standard”Where’s my refund” service from the IRS does not track amended tax return status’. You need to instead use the IRS tool, “Where’s My Amended Return.”

You can also access the tool via phone by calling 1-866-464-2050.  Only call the IRS to follow up on delayed amended return refunds after 12 weeks. The number to call is 1-800-829-1040.

    • Mike, that is the Million Dollar question…lol. Actually for the tester the 18th was the first cut off for IRS to test their system, so you just made it. So if anyone should see any movement first, it should be us, but then again we are talking about IRS, so that philosophy may go right out the window…it is too logic for IRS..lol. You are in the same batch of 201704 the 1st one…first thing in the morning, check the WMR, transcript for code 846, bank account (in any order) then here :-)

    • Amber, that may be true that they were not allowed to pull up the PATH people return by Law; that must be what is in their script. Thats why they were vague when people tried to get more info about DDD or deposits. So, I guess we all will find out together in the morning how they going to roll this PATH thingy out….not all will see DDD by Saturday, but at least a LOT of us will…let’s just see who are the lucky ones and find out when they were accepted to figure out if they are random….

  5. Hi jazzy. I have a question. I have filed my return on 2/8 was accepted and received same day on 2/10 I received full path message and ordered both my transcripts 2/11. I still have the full path message as we speak however I wasn’t able to view my transcripts online so I do not have access to the codes. My question is will I maybe among those that receive their refunds this week or next or will it be next month. Even though I was able to order transcripts with full path message with no bars?

    Reply
    • Nykky, you made the cut off for the PATH….but tomorrow or Thursday that message will no longer apply to the LAW, so based on IRS once it is removed it will convert back to “processing” and DDD back on regular schedules. Where DDD are updated on Thursday, Saturday and Monday Morning for DDD wed and Friday of the following week. If processing by first in first out…then you probably want get a DDD until Saturday for the 22nd or 24th. IRS may do accelerated releases everyday to clear backlogs…

  7. JAZZY, so we may not get an update in the morning? I was accepted on January 23rd been about 22 days now but my transcripts are on their way in the mail.

    • IRS is saying they going to update on the 16th the WMR, but I think a LOT of us will see some movement in the morning. I know this jwolf…that PATH MSG better be GONE…because it does not comply anymore…IRS can officially start releasing refunds. So I would be shocked if anyone says they still have the PATH…unless IRS is going to take it down on the 16th…can’t wait to see what transpire in the morning…it will be interesting to say the least…no one really knows what to expect…eek

IRS is saying the WMR will start updating on the 16th…we all know we will see pending DDD or 846 code probably before WMR update Thursday. All IRS website and articles, news releases clearly states they will be releasing refunds on the 15th. Not after…so not sure when we will see a deposit…but I think some could tomorrow and for sure on Friday…no matter what the WMR show

  10. (continued) Before Feb. 18, some taxpayers may see a projected deposit date or an intermittent message that the IRS is processing their return. What is puzzling about this news release today is the part where it says “Those who don’t get a DDD by the 18th; will get a message instead saying IRS is processing their return”?…..well anyone who had the PATH message then get it is still processing please don’t freak out…I guess it means IRS can’t do them all during this time frame…

she didn’t want to provide any further information

Keep your eyes on your bank account and check your transcript for the 846 code in the morning…if nothing happens guess it will be Thursday and Friday before we see pending deposits or DDD…cross your fingers :-)

    • Nena, thanks for the update…look like IRS is not bending for the law…the 15th it is. Hope many of us wake up with some HAPPY news…can’t wait. Reply
      • That is true toya, cycle codes are used for batching and releasing refunds to the Master File to be submitted to the Treasury on Monday’s. Transcript just let you know your cycle code to determine which batch you will be in and give you valuable information on where they are in the process until you get the final 846 code. IRS will never tell the truth, because they don’t want us Taxpayers to figure out their system of processing…but it is all in the IRS Manual….outlined in details…

        Reply
      • toya, if IRS admit getting your transcript will give you insight, 53 million who gets a refund will be requesting them, the other 100 million who owes the IRS don’t care about transcripts…they OWE…lol. So they will try to keep this little secret (quiet). I know how to read the Manual and I got their number down….and transcript do matter greatly. Trust me!

    • Jasmine, you were just accepted week of Feb 5-11th and already get your transcript…does your processing dates say 3-6-17? What do the WMR say? PATH MSG would no longer be effective so you should process normally and could see a DDD or deposit within the next 2 weeks. Look like they are processing those who are accepted the week of Feb 5 to present on scheduled. Refunds within 8-10 days. good luck

        • Jasmine, oh ok…cross your fingers because just a few of us will win the lottery between `5-18 with a DDD and pending deposit hopefully this week up to Saturday. IRS is saying anyone who don’t get selected there WMR will convert back to the “we are still processing your return a date will be available…” I guess that will happen as the continue to process with DDD….up until the 27th. Based on their on website news release today. ugh :-(

  13. I completed my son grandmother tax refund on February 9th, it was accepted on February 10th.

She just got her federal return deposited into her bank account a few minutes ago…Today is February 14th.

She filed single w/ no kids, the bars on the website is orange and still is showing as “received” while I type this message.

Yet, she just got her money a few minutes ago.

    • Being Patient, Wow that was quick. They must be bored since they don’t have anything to do since they are holding 53 millions of our EIC/ACTC refunds. I read an article where they are actually seem to be disappointed because they are processing 29% less returns to date…so now everyone who files are getting process in 2 days…and deposits in 5…too funny…lmbo.

I haven’t gotten much information from the irs or H & R block. I filed 2/7/2017 got accepted the same night and was able to order my transcripts 3 days later. I’m just waiting now. I have the full path message with no bars. I’m not sure what that means? I’m guessing from what ive read. I have a refund on its way.

Just being on here chatting with everyone has really made the wait more relaxing…less stress. Thank you, I hope I was able to help out; So, glad we all about to see this journey come to and end…but some of us may be seeing a DDD up to the 27th…it will take them over 2 weeks to process and release 53 millions refunds.

        • That is the same processing date I have, and we are the first cycle dates for 2017; the first 3 weeks were dead cycle and they combined them with week 4 of the year which is our cycle and processing date…so we should be first to get our DDD, unless they are doing them randomly instead of first in first out…who really knows about IRS..lol. Pour m e a drink….maybe 5 drinks…lmbo.

  17. I filed my taxes on 2/1/17 and I received my state refund on 2/6/17 but I have yet to get a DDD for my federal taxes. I also was able to order my tax transcript through the mail. Hopefully I will see a DDD soon.

  21. The same thing happened last year, it was delayed. This year the IRS just decided to announce it and give everybody a heads up. I actually had my DD in my account and the WMR never updated and said it was approved or sent, so let’s just check our bank accounts people.

    Reply
    • Yes there was a slight delay..nothing as compared to this. In all of my years of filing single with no eitc or actc it has taken roughly 8 to 10 days including the weekend to receive my funds

  22. So i had a ddd for 2.15.17 and called my bank to verify a pending deposit and there’s nothing which has me to believe i wont receive it until Thursday or Friday. The irs is not fooling this year with sending them out before the scheduled date

So hopefully she is right but the IRS lady said I have to wait until the 27 but she didn’t look at my taxes forms so I don’t no what to think

  24. For those of you who have the PATH MSG to check after the 15th and you haven’t gotten any letters by now…let’s give it until the 18th to see what happens. Those who have NOT gotten the PATH should be on the phone NOW with IRS to find out why the holdup. Perhaps you can get it resolve. Anyone pass the 21 days, can tell IRS to do a 911 request form for an advocate to call you to help resolve this issue if you can’t…with an advocate IRS has 2 weeks to release the hold. Lookup one in your State

      • According to the protecting Americans from tax hikes path act the IRS can’t issue refunds before February 15 for tax returns that claim the earned income tax portion not associated with these credits. Check whereas my refund after February 15 thaws what u will see when they have processed your taxes I hope that helped

      • Teresa, do you still have our bars and the amount on the side? If they both disappeared and you have a FULL PAGE of the PATH MSG that says check back after the 15th for a personalized DDD…then you are good. If not, there is an issue.

        • Yea I still see my bars and amount. I received a letter from DOR yesterday for my state refund stating that I verify who I am entering my last name and a code on a website. I’m now wondering if something like that applies to my federal. Maybe I’ll call HR Block since the IRS is no help and thats who I filed with anyways…except I did it myself online through their program.

        • Teresa, I think that is what you need to do with the Federal. Keep calling until you get someone tell them the WMR told you you needed to do an ID verification and to call.

    • Jazzy, what is the path message you talk about? I just see the topic 152 on mine so far and its been 17 days…yes im counting lol

    • Agree, IRS WMR updates very slowly because everyone keeps on using it constantly thus causing it not to update. If it’s like my systen at work, its tied to one server and its seeing to much net work traffic to update. Wait at least till the 16th or even 17. Last 5 years they sent my refund before updated WMR. So they will most likely release funds then update. Good luck. Im holding out till the 17th lol gonna be hard not to peak.

    • Awesome, now you go back in que and within 1-2 weeks you should have your DDD or refund, probably still before 2-27.16. They can manually push it thru without going to in line as well. So you can get it this week or next.

    • Destiny, they did not tell you WHY? it was pulled? Normally you can just answer a few questions and they will release it back in line to process. Did they send a letter or say they were? I would called back and get more info. Unless it is a FULL BLOWN audit, it will not take 9 weeks. Perhaps 2 weeks after you solve the issue. Also, you can request they do a 911 request for an Advocate to contact you and get it resolve quickly. With an advocate it only takes 2 weeks to release the hold.

IRS estimate 53 million filed EIC/ACTC.. this is why they are having a full crew on staff Sat and Mon.

Tomorrow after 7am EST or 4am PST which is when they update, pull your recorded of accounts transcript against..if you see code 864 they’ve processed it and sent it to the bank!

    • Kiana, I was told by a rep that WMR will not update until Friday, IRS rep said there will be refund deposits, a flood of them, but at the same time WMR will still look the same for some, she said just check account, and all banks don’t have access to pending deposits until the IRS releases your refund

      Reply
      • Toya, your return cannot be release without the 846 code on your transcript. That is the code that complete the full cycle for the tax year…and releases the refund. Everyone has to get that code…this is how IRS balance their account record and books and closed out the return. PATH people and all…

  33. Morning everyone. I was just wondering if anyone else finds it rather odd that from the new IRS statement that WMR will update from 16-18 for most of us but before it was the first rounds of returns were being sent out on the 15th and NOW it says we won’t see them till the 27th at the earliest. This whole cloak and dagger from them needs to stop. I understand they are trying to “help” with this new law but to be honest, how much interest are they getting from holding onto our returns for longer.

    Reply
    • If its been 21 days, YES if they choose to be honest which is rare…lol. If not, then they will just say we can’t tell you anything until the 15th…geez or they will say we are updating WMR 16-18 with Personalized DDD. You better off just checking your bank or transcript for the 846 code :-)

      Reply
    • Unless you return has been approved by them I highly doubt it. I called twice so far and because it isnt approved after 2 weeks so far…they havent been able to give me any info. Just told me to wait pretty much. This Saturday will be 21 days for me. I hope there is a deposit before then!

  34. I have a cycle code of 20170605 but I don’t see any other codes like 846. Where would that be? WMR says I should have my deposit by 2/15 so I’m hoping by Friday 2/17? Thoughts?

    Reply
    • Danika, do you have a processing date of 2-27-17? You won’t see 846 until your refund has actually been released. But your account would see a pending deposit before then. All we can do is wait until tomorrow or the 16th to see what the updates will give us. That code would be the last code under the others…on your transcript…because that ends the process and closes the file for this tax year.

      Reply
        • Danika, scroll down to the next section you will see a processing date.- The 4-15-17 is the final date to submit tax returns without penalty.
