Key Takeaways
- TC 570 freezes your refund for additional review; it's a hold, not an audit.
- TC 971 right after 570 with the same date usually clears in 3 to 6 weeks.
- TC 570 then 971 with different dates may take longer and needs your response.
- Watch for 571 or 572; either code signals your hold is clearing.
Transaction codes and tax topics are used across IRS refund status applications — WMR or the IRS app — and account transcripts, to show filers what’s happening with their tax return, why it’s delayed, when a refund will be paid, or why it was lower than expected.
You’ll generally see Transaction Code 570 (TC 570) on your tax transcript once your return has been through initial system processing.
This code means additional review — often requiring manual intervention — is being done, and your return processing (and refund payment) is frozen until it’s resolved.
It generally corresponds with the Tax Topic 152 WMR or IRS app message that your return is under processing or review.
It can take several days or weeks for TC 570 issues to resolve, given the range of things this code covers. I’ve listed the most common causes below, including two new ones specific to this filing season.
What Does Code 570 on Your Transcript Mean?
Per IRS guidelines, TC 570 means your return is on hold due to a pending additional liability review. No further processing or refund payment happens until this hold lifts.

Code 570 can be triggered by a mismatch with employer-reported wage income, injured spouse claims, ID verification, or reconciling tax credits (EITC, RRC, CTC) claimed versus what the IRS has on record.
New for the 2026-2027 filing season, two additional triggers are showing up frequently:
- OBBBA “No Tax on Overtime” and “No Tax on Tips” deductions. If you claimed either new deduction, the IRS’s automated systems may pause your return to verify your employer reported the corresponding overtime hours or tip income correctly. A mismatch between what you claimed and what your employer reported is a common cause of a 570 hold this season.
- Form 1099-DA cost-basis mismatches. 2026 is the first filing season digital asset brokers were required to issue Form 1099-DA. If you sold Bitcoin, Ethereum, or other digital assets in 2025 and your reported cost basis differs from what the broker reported to the IRS — even slightly — your return gets flagged. This “basis gap” is a leading cause of the 570/971 combination this year.
Because IRS systems can’t automatically reconcile these mismatches, they get sent for manual review and verification, which is what generates TC 570.

You’ll normally see code 971 right after 570 — TC 971 is the generic code for an IRS notice or letter that explains the issue or advises of further delays (e.g. an additional 60-day review).

Can I Resolve TC 570 via TC 971 IRS Notice?
Following additional review, the IRS can often resolve TC 570 automatically — no further action needed from you — and your return is released for further processing, including refund payment.
An internal or automatic resolution generally only delays your refund by one to three weeks. You’ll get a notice of the resolution and a chance to appeal the adjustment, but refund processing and payment continue in the interim.
If more information is needed, the IRS sends a letter (also reflected as TC 971) requesting additional documents or details — for OBBBA-related holds, this often means providing pay stubs or employer confirmation of overtime/tip amounts; for 1099-DA mismatches, it may mean documentation of your cost basis for the digital assets sold.
What Do the Amounts Against Code 570 Mean?
It may show a $0 amount against the 570 line if the IRS is still reviewing your return and/or the issue is non-monetary. The amount may change to a liability (positive number) if the IRS adjusts your return.
What Do the Dates Next to 570 and 971 Mean?
Check the dates as well as the amounts, since you may see transaction lines spanning several tax years — make sure you’re looking at the current year’s lines.

If you see TC 971 then TC 570 with the same date, it generally means the IRS auto-adjusted your refund and sent a resolution notice — expect payment within 3 to 6 weeks, assuming no other issues, once you see lines 846 and 571 or 572.
If you see TC 570 then TC 971 with different dates and your refund amount hasn’t changed, it means a hold that may take longer, since the IRS is still actively processing. Follow the instructions in your IRS notice and respond promptly to any requests for more information.
When Will I Know My 570 Issue Is Resolved (Codes 571, 572 and 846)?
You’ll know TC 570 is resolved when it progresses to 571 (freeze resolved) or 572 (Resolved Additional Account Action), or your liability balance goes to $0. A final 971 notice confirms the resolution.
If no further issues are found, a refund (TC 846) is then released for payment.

How Long Will This Delay My Refund?
The IRS generally cites 45 to 60 days for additional reviews, though this has varied by season depending on processing backlogs. For the 2026-2027 season, OBBBA-related and 1099-DA-related holds are generally resolving faster — often within 2 to 8 weeks — since these are increasingly common, well-understood patterns the IRS has built automated cross-checks for.
You may also see extended delays and code 570/971 if your refund is held for PATH Act reasons if you claimed the EITC or ACTC.
Help! What If My IRS Adjustment Is Wrong?
You can appeal any IRS adjustment, but you’ll still get the adjusted refund ahead of the appeal being resolved. If you win, the IRS pays the additional amount later.
You can also contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) for help or hardship consideration, though TAS prioritizes genuine hardship cases (imminent eviction, medical needs) given demand.

Return Due Date or Return Received Date (Whichever is Later) April 15, 2024
Processing Date March 11, 2024
•150 Tax return filed 20240805 03-11-2024
16221-434-18663-4
•806 W-2 or 1099 withholding 04-15-2024
•570 Additional account action pending 03-11-2024 $0.00
What does all this mean?
I was supposed to receive my refund on 2/24/2024
I did file EIC I have a 14 year old I claim
This has never happened to me before I used Turbo Tax and I am really nervous.
Any information would be really helpful.
Mine is exactly the same situation as yours.
I could copy and paste mine and it would be the exact same text… This is so dumb, with no notices…
I have waited for 4 months from one number off withholding all correct now
Code 571 Resolved addition account action. What does this mean
Thanks for your knowledge of ITS
This means your refund should have come soon after. Did it?
@Andy does it matter if the 570 come before 971 and both have the same dates?
@Andy does it matter if the 570 come before 971 and both have the same dates if you know?
As of 8/28/2023 I see code 571 Resolved addition account action
10/2/2023
I have code 846 – Refund Issued (DD 7/19/2023)
Then……..Santa Barbara Tax Group sent my tax return back to the IRS and now I have the following codes;
776 – Interest credited to your account (7/31/2023)
841 – Refund cancelled (7/31/2023)
777 – Reduced or removed interest credited to your account (7/31/2023)
971 – Notice issued (8/14/2023)
570 – Additional account action pending (8/28/2023)
What does all this mean?? Dose this mean I won’t get my tax return now or what is going on?
I have code 150.766, 768 and 570 and no further codes, when I log into my account no notices. Date on 570 is 03/27/23. So it’s been close now to the 60 days. When I called the advocate line they said that they have 45 days to issue refund or ask for more information via notice however it is now the 9th of may ( nearly the 10th ) and still no 864 code nor notices. What now?
I am having the same experience – wrote this article to track progress. Not yet called an advocate, but that could be my next step.
Not much you can do either than. There are also some reports the IRS/Treasury is delaying refund payments due to the debt ceiling debacle, which means they need to preserve money to keep the government running.
I took out all the dollar amounts except for the $0.00 that appears with the 570 TC:
•150 Tax return filed 20230905 03-20-2023 – $$(amount)
76211-445-00214-3
•806 W-2 or 1099 withholding 04-15-2023 – $$(amount)
•766 Credit to your account 04-15-2023 – $$(amount)
•570 Additional account action pending – $0.00
No other TC’s. I have no clue what’s going on and everything I read says 971 TC is usually included. But I haven’t been notified at all about this. I happened to sign in and look and saw this a month ago
It basically means the IRS is doing reviews (likely manual) of your return for some reason. Could be up to 20 weeks. Call the IRS and ensure no return/identity checks are required for you to complete (you can also see this on your IRS account).
Filed 1/29/23 & approved 1/30/23!
I got code 570 with a 4/3 date and a letter in the mail saying I’m under a 60 day review. Today has been 55 days and as of 3/24 I got code 971 with a 4/10 date! I’m praying my letter is good news but I have a feeling it’s not being codes 570 and 971 have different dates (going by what Google says). Can someone tell me what the date of 4/3 next to code 570 means being the date has passed as of yesterday?? Just curious! Also my WMR is still saying my return is being processed but when I log into my IRS account, the notification that’s usually there on the 1st screen saying your return has not yet been prossesed “and so on” does not say anything now, as of 3/24 when my transcript was updated. So being there is no notification there AT ALL, does that mean my return is done being processed?
Same here
I have a processing date of March 6, 2023. It’s the 8th and no update on transcript.
Code 570
Code 806
Code570
Code768 is what I have in that order. Only letter I received is the delay and I didn’t have to do anything. I claimed the EIC. 20230705 cycle code. What’s going on bubba?
Code 150 is the first one, not 570
I just have code 570 with a date next to it of 3-6-2023 what does the date mean?
Means you return is on hold undergoing further processing. Just need to wait or the IRS to finish and provided updated information. They will mail you a letter if they cannot auto reconcile the issue or need to undertake further identity verification.
I have the same thing and it’s the 8th. No update on transcript or anything
I know it’s super early.
filed-2/6
accepted- 2/6
wmr-2/11 updated one bar ” still being processed” TTC 152
transcript not updated.
Is it to early to freak out never had that message prior years.
No. Its only been a week and with PATH things are held up. You should get an update later this week – but nothing alarming from the dates and codes so far.
Hello Andy ,
On 9-19-22 I amended my return on 12-02-22 I have code 810 and on 12-30 I checked where’s my amended page and I went to amended adjusted , I have the following codes under the dates
977 on 9-19
766 code with date 4-15-22
290 /766 date 1-9-23
I received my notice on 1-9-23 stating I will receive a refund with 2-3 weeks , I’m confused
I need clarification please
I filed amended on 9-19-22 on 12-2-22 I got code 810 next it updated to code 290 date 1-9-23 and code 971 also date 1-9-23 on transcript
On where’s my amended refund app I have it was adjusted on 12-30-22 .
I have also received letter on 1-9 -23 stating I am due a refund and I should receive in 2-3 weeks .
Hi Andy I have code 571 resolved additional acct action dated 11-14-22
It’s been almost a month no notice and no update
What can I expect next?
That’s the big question. 571 means your return is held up by IRS processing, and could be due to several reasons. At this stage it is taking up to 120 days to resolve issues. You will likely sees a 60-day notice if the IRS expects to take longer to process your return. Sorry, not good news, but just seeing long delays. See this recent video covering this.
This is currently how it looks right now .. does this seem like a good sign or bad ?
570 Additional account action pending 10-10-2022 $0.00
971 Notice issued 10-17-2022 $0.00
571 Resolved additional account action 11-14-2022 $0.00
This is a good sign as resolved action. What did your notice say? You may get another one soon, but your refund (if applicable) should be paid in 4 to 6 weeks.
So I still haven’t received any notice regarding the resolved. I’ve been waiting to receive something and have not so hopefully it will update soon to 846 but it’s been stuck at 571 Additional account action pending with the 11-14-22 date.
Mines said 971 12-05-22 but still no update no letter or anything I was wondering did you ever get yours
Hello Andy
I have code 810 & 971
Processing date Oct 24.22
Refund freeze 9-15-22
Notice issued Oct 24.22
IRS Code 810 means a freeze has been placed on your refund or a freeze on your earned income credit. The notice you should get or have gotten will explain the reason you may have been deemed ineligible.
So I filed on Feb 4 the 810 it says 0.00 was on 2-16-23 will I get a refund? My refund says it still being processed
Hey Andy I have code 571 dated 8/15/22 but still no refund
Hey Andy quick question so I have 570 code date 09/05/22 and code 971 also dated 09/05/22 check transcript today and have another 971 dated 09/12/22 what does this mean cycle code 05
Hey Joe Joe,
Did you ever find out what it was? Because on my transcript it has the same dates Code: 570 for 06/05/2022 and 971 for 09/12/2022
Wells my first 971 code was to inform me that I’m eligible for earned income credit but still have not received my second notice
I am still having this issue and mine we filed and accepted in mid January… I have recieved several notices saying they require nothing more from me amd to just keep waiting patiently. Each claiming they need another 30 or 60 days to finish processing… Got the first notice on March 8th asking for 30 days, then another on April 15th asking for 60 days. Then another on June 15th asking for another 60 days. And I’ve still not even been told why it is they need more time. And now I can’t even get through to anyone on the phone… It’s been beyond frustrating… If you have any idea what could be happening I’d be eternally grateful…
I too am baffled. My electronic filing was accepted on 2/25/22. I was stuck with no info for the longest time. 07/25/22 I had a code 810/811 on the same date. 08/01/22 I have a 570. I can’t get a live person, been calling for months. Isn’t a 570 another freeze, as with 810? Why al the freeze? I was reading up on this 570 code, and I understand it could take another 4 months?
Thank you
U should have called a tax advocate after first 30 day notice. They push it
Ty. Tax advocates are not accepting new cases and that’s if you can get someone one the line at all, to tell you, to gth. Unkind
There is just code 570 but no code 970 on my transcript. What does that mean? And this is from 7/12/2021. I am still awaiting response for a year now.
It means it is likely still under processing and no IRS letter has been sent. I would definitely call the IRS asap and talk to a live agent. A year wait to get a response is much longer than what others are saying.
Really interesting, I’m sitting at code 570 as well, dated 7/12/2021 as well! I wonder if they had something wrong with a batch that was processing that day? It’s now 3 weeks over 1 year that this has been pending.
